Yes, I searched first...

* Will an F or 2F oil pan fit on a 3FE engine?

* What is the consensus on putting RTV on the oil pan gasket (entire thing)? I have a new OEM cork gasket from the dealer. The old gasket I just scraped off was heavily coated with RTV. I know you're only supposed to put it at the corners where there are seams in the block, but I really REALLY hate leaks, so I was thinking of a light coat of RTV (Permatex Right Stuff) on the sealing faces just as insurance, then torquing to spec. I honestly can't tell for sure if the pan was leaking before, but something sure was, so I'm replacing EVERYTHING.

Thanks.

Its actually not a good idea to use rtv along the cork. I mean, you can, but its not recommended. I asked this same question not too long ago and I got some good advice. Just like the cork in a wine bottle soaks up the wine and creates a better seal, the cork in the gasket soaks up the oil and creates a better seal. You'll notice that the pan has grooves that you would think are for rtv, but are actually for when the gasket expands. You want to place RTV where the cork and the rubber meets, because thats the most common place for a leak. I'm not sure if the oil pans are the same, but my guess would be that they are. Just a guess though.:rasta:

Thanks, I'll think about this.

Well, I kinda need to know for sure. I just discovered that my oil pan is rusted thru at the very bottom above that little "skidplate" thingy that's spotwelded on. I figured I'd have a lot more luck finding an old 2F pan than a 3F pan. A new one is around $150!

I think I will try to grind off the spotwelds and see if I can weld a patch of 1/8" steel plate over the entire bottom. What the heck, it's worth a try.
