I have an early bronco that has a steering box on it. I don't know what it is off of and need to rebuild it. It has some markings on it, I thought you guys might know what its from.

There is a silver tag on it that is marked 6558945
and in the top of the box 6418 is cast into it.

Any help you could give would be appreciated!

you might want to try the ford section as its a FORD part, not a nissan part

Probably a saginaw....and they're probably the same rebuild for most early broncos.

Thanks for the info! I was told it was a nissan product and saw one very similar to it on an 83 hardbody. I will pursue the Ford route, sorry for the confusion.

Its a 720 (80-86 box) 2wd / 4wd use the same box. Lots of broncos used them for power steering conversions.

What seals/ parts do you need? I can look them up.

Thanks for the info! It is leaking where the front half of the body meets the back half. I think I have a bad oring. I did some salvage yard searching again yesterday, and your info is very helpful. It looks like the same box has two different mounting options. One has four bolts to the frame and the other looks the same, but has only three mounting holes.

I guess I would like to rebuild it all so it's good to go for sure, I have already tapped it for hydro assist, so I don't want a different one. It was a pain to do.

Thanks again.

I sold 2 of my old 85 boxes to a company that sells them for Broncos.

Let me see if I can find which one is 3 bolt and which is 4 bolt in FAST. I have owned 3 85 720s. I had to replace the top o ring at the shaft once.

Thanks for looking. I need the 4 bolt one. Knowing the years will sure help me out. I knew someone on here would know.

OK the 3 bolt was used on 6/79-82 I think from this picture.

Does yours have the hoses on the top or side?

3/83 (84-86 model years) went 4 bolt. 1983 is the first year of the Made in USA (TN trucks) .

720 was made 80-86.

I dont see seals for the 83+ box. But ironically I have ordered those seals for my 85. The earlier boxes have two different part numbers for seals. 80-82 and 83.

Maybe you do have a D21 86.5-97 box. The box changed in 91 to a huge shaft.

Do any of these look similar?

I just found a nice one page picture of the 86 power steering box. And a few pages on how to rebuild one in my 86 720 FSM. Let me know if you need it scanned.

These look great! Thanks for the info. I will see what I can get done with these schematics and report back. I will be working on it next week so I will have more to report. Thanks for taking the time to help me out!

My hoses go in the top, but they dont have the round "button" looking thing, just regular male ends on them.

I finally found a remaned box for this! It was a tough road. It is from an 86 1/2. 6 cylinder 4wd pickup. It was a bear to get anyone around here to help me. Thanks for your help.

It should be here by Friday! What steering shafts have you all used? I would like to eliminate the rag joint with a ujoint. Any part numbers or spline info on the shaft to the steering shaft?

All the newer stuff has a U joint at the box and rag at the firewall. I have an extra one for a 91 I think.

This is my 92 pathy.

Here is the rag joint.

Do you know if the splines on the newer ones are the same out of the box? MIne is a 36 spline, but I cannot figure out the diameter equivilant on my micrometer. I want to use a ujoint by the box, but mine came with a rag joint. I ruined a rag joint on the Con last year and ended up making one out of the sidewall of my spare tire at Buck Island at 1am. Good times, but I want to use a ujoint and do it right. Any help will be appreciated.

OK, I found out it is 35 spline 11/16 OD. I am off to find a ujoint to work for this. Is that the same for the others?

Let me measure one of mine. My spare shaft is 40miles away. I have the fenders off today let me stick my head in there and measure and count.

OK I measured 35 I think. Its hard to count. It measures exactly 17mm shaft. About 11/16.

ALL the D21 trucks have the same U joint shaft from 86-97. I dont see see any rag joints at the box. 4 and 6cyl use same shaft.

48080-33G00- supereced by interpart number
48080-93G15 7/90 (91+) d21 - 97.

I counted my stock steering wheel. Its the same spline count and size too.

The whole lower shaft NEW at an online dealer is about $79. Just for reference.

put the part number in here.

http://www.abcnissanwholesale.com/oem_parts.html

I did some more research, the 720 (80-86) have a rag joint at the box.

Thanks, I pulled a shaft from a donor rig at the salvage yard. The lower ujoint fits great! I am workng on modifying my Bronco upper shaft to match. It should work fine. I will update as I finish it. Thanks

I got it all put back together. I was able to use a later model nissan shaft they are 11/16 36 spline and mount it to the Ford one. I drove it Saturday, seems to work great! I have a few kinks to work out, but it is nice to have it going again. I ended up with an 86 1/2 box from a pickup with a 6 cylinder. Drilled, tapped it for hydro and it seems to work well.

Thanks again for all the help!
