what are the perks of using dana 44s over using toy axles?? what are the down sides?? i can get some 44s for free, or a rear center diff toy for free, would have to buy the front, i wouldnt mind spending the money if its worth it, but ive always been a fan of free shiat!!:D also, if i use a centered rear diff and CVed rear d shaft, would i have any problems?? I do plan on extending the wheel base 5 to 7 inches (maybe more, not likely though) thanks! CYA!!:smokin: :rasta:

first off do you know a guy name bobby akers or a jon robinson? there from pikeville. we were stationed together in beaufort sc. anyway i run 44's out of a 78 wagoneer. they both are offset to the passenger side like the sami so you don't have to worry about the center diff. i kow that land crusier axles are offset and not centered in the rear. the axles are 58" rear and 61" front. 44's don't have birfields in the front either. which are the weak piont in my eyes, but i now alot of toyota guys that run pretty big tires with no problem. i don't think that the yota are as wide either. but i've heard that they are almost a direct bolt in once you move the spring perches a little. you still run into the same problems with both like driveshafts and what not. if you could get the offset 44's for free i'd say go with that. what vehicle are they out off. :usa:

also if your taking the time to put in some axles i would lenghtin it as well. if you look at the post about wheelbase on here it will give you a little bit more in sight. i'm at 97" and i swear by it the same as i would the 44's.:usa:

nope, i dont know bobby or jon, ive only lived i pikeville for about a year, im not exactly sure what the 44s will come out of, i have access to a junk yard and im friends with the guy and if i need parts i can just go get em (i help him sell shiat and he hooks me up)! i was looking for toy axles and he has just a rear out of a 86-87 4runner but no front axles, he does have a front for a land cruiser though, but no rear, im even starting to think about using the TLC front and finding a ford 9" about the same width. thats why i was asking about the centered rear diff, i may not be able to get an offset rear?:( thanks CYA!!

IMHO, the only perk is the 44 ring gear is a lil bigger , the diff location is no big deal , i could live with it but what the fawk do i know ? :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

wassup newbie???:flipoff2: :flipoff2:
well, i see you still havent learned to search, lol.
the toy swap is easier and the axles are a little lighter(dont have the exact #'s)
the 44's dont have birfs, and the ring gear is about 1/2 inch bigger. i dont really see a strength issue here though. you can get the longfields for the toy axles, and theyll be stronger than the stock u joints in the 44's. if your going to drive it on the street, a centered rear diff is going to have some vibes, but if your going to trailer it, i woudnt worry too much. when we going to tear it apart?? mines in pieces as we speak, lol.

*IMHO*
stronger(shafts/r+p)
wider
better turning radius(open/closed knuckles)
hubs stronger (internal)
possibly cheaper
OX locker available
housing stiffer
parts availability in BFE
NO BIRFIELDS

BTW, really, SEARCH first before asking, many aspects of swapping engines/axles/seats/trannies/flares etc have been done to DEATH!

Oh, and offset rear stock if you use a fullsize Wagoneer/Cherokee rear axle!

It's a D44 axle, with D30 outers on it. I'm running D44 (760) joints by boring out the CJ stub shaft yoke. The 760 joint is dead, and the little 27 spline D30 stub exploded. Lesson learned, I'm not fixin' that heap sh!t again. Goin' to D44 outers as soon as I can piece together the 5 on 5-1/2 parts I need... :)
