: V10 Excursion?
HardcorewannabeXJ 04-03-2008, 08:17 PM Any decent for a tow rig? Jeep or boat, nothing too large. I've been talking to a guy who is selling one pretty cheap. I've heard that it tows well, will probably last as long as the diesels (auto trans excluded) and can get up to 14-16 mpg when driven like grandma.
It's a 2000 limited, full leather trimmed in good condition, 4x4, auto, 157k on the odo. He is looking for $7k. I have always liked the excursion and would absolutely die for a diesel, but is it worth the extra 10g for the diesel? I think it's worth more but not necessarily what they seem to go for. This would probably end up a DD/Tow rig until I can get a new/newer diesel in a year or less. I just don't think my 03 F150 is gonna like towing a 4500lb jeep and 1500 lb trailer :shaking:
Travis Waldher 04-03-2008, 08:29 PM 14-16mpg in a V10? The one I knew got closer to 10.
What engine is in your F150? You are only talking about 6,000lbs.

5.4, it's got a tow rating of 7700 lbs. With trailer brakes it's probably not so bad, but it is half ton.
TOAdisco311 04-03-2008, 08:41 PM As a owner of a similar mileage V10, I would say its a pretty damn good truck for the price. That mileage number is a little off though, I've been averaging 13-14 when I drive it easy on the highway, and 7-10 towing a 8,000lbs trailer.
Rockit 04-03-2008, 08:59 PM Your 150 should work fine. I towed about 8k with an '01 and it did ok. Not fast up hills, but serviceable. Only prob I ever had was the tranny would get hot while climbing.
My brother in law has a V10 350. Double tows a 5er and ski boat. Not sure his weight but he's been happy with the performance. He had a CTD until recently but got the Ford for the larger cab.
He gets 10 empty and 5-8 pulling.
HardcorewannabeXJ 04-03-2008, 09:20 PM It's the FX4 model which means we got 3.55 gears, limited slip, tranny cooler, and factory tow package. Do have 285/70R17's on it though...
I know it will tow it but I'd rather not be hating life cause I'm doing 45 up hills and the tranmission just sticking in 3rd gear.
Travis Waldher 04-03-2008, 09:24 PM If the only reason you are getting the excursion is for towing, personally I'de stick with the 150 for a while and see how it does.

x2. I can pull 70 mph all day long with 7000 lbs behind my half ton, no sway, no handling troubles, don't even have a wd hitch. I would give it a shot before dropping coin on something you don't need to.
jebdrup 04-04-2008, 03:41 PM I have a 02' Excursion V10 with 100,000 and it is my wifes DD and she loves it. I used it to tow my Jeep until I got my Dodge Diesel. We love the room that it has and would not trade it for the world. When the motor goes it is going to get a Cummins engine swap. I had a 07' Dodge Ram 1500 with the Hemi and it did not like towing the Jeep at all and it had no balls on the hills. I have 04.5' Dodge 3500 Diesel and it is nice.
I would say go for it and get Excusion you won't regret it. I have no issues with my trans in my Excusion but I don't drive it like I stole it either. The Excusion needs a WD hitch because of the soft rear leaf springs.
My wife gets about 13-14 mpg daily driving and both long (2,000 + miles) trips with the Jeep we got 10-11 mpg.
When I first got the Excursion.

10-12 doesn't sound bad to me for towing that much weight. Pretty sure max load on mine is 7700 lb's so I intend to keep under that.
95steel 04-07-2008, 06:35 AM We have an 03 v10. Average 12mpg DDing it. Love the truck. All the room you could need. 12 mpg sucks though. My best tank is only 13 mpg. I just rebuilt my exhaust hoping for better mileage.... only ran half a tank so far.
