are YJ frames mild or medium steel? I'm planni ng on doing some welding work and I need to know what electrodes to use. If mild I'll probably just use 7018 if I decide to use SMAW(stick) or 811N3 in .052 size if I use flux cored wire. if it's medium steel I don't really even know what to do. also I know that these frames are galvanized and I've never welded on anything galvanized and don't know what precautions to take besides grinding down the parent metal til it's shinny and wearing my respirator, is there anything else that needs to be done with galvanized metal? Thanks in advance for any feedback

The frame is mild steel, just flap disc the areas you are welding to and you'll be fine. Also the frames are NOT galvanized. Jeep started galvanizing the tubs in '88 to reduce rust on the tub.

Good to know. I got the impression that the frames were galvanized somewhere glad to know it's BS, I hate wearing respirators for little jobs.

.052 in flux core wire might require a little more heat input than the frame might take... I can see some potential problems with key holing using this large of a wire on the thickness of steel in the stamped frame rails...

most of the ones around here are made of rust!

Watch the heat! My Millermatic 210 can and will blow holes through the frame with .023 wire.
