I looked for my old thread but looks like some house cleaning was done so I will ask in a new thread.

We have a small group coming down from Oregon June 23-25th to run the con on a mon-tue-wed. From what I understand all rigs need either current plates AND be street legal or Ca green stickers. I checked on california dmv site and it was unclear to me on how to go about this. Basically I need to get a green sticker for an out of state rig. Do I have to go to the Ca DMV for this. I could register my truck in Oregon but it is far from street legal. Any suggestions would be great. I would like to have this all taken care of long befoer driving down.

If this is a commonly asked question sorry I can delete this.

From the OHMVR web site:

Nonresident Permit: You will need to purchase a special "Nonresident OHV Permit" if you are not a California resident AND your off-highway vehicle or snowmobile is not registered in your home state. Your state's plate or sticker must be clearly visible on the vehicle. To find out where these Nonresident OHV Permits can be purchased and to get more information on the program, please contact a local Ranger or contact the OHMVR Division at:

I got my "Nonresident OHV Use Permit" in the mail today. On the back it gives directions on where to place the sticker on your rig. It specifies Snowmobiles, ATV, Motorcycles, and Sandrails. So is this still gonna work for my truck?

I purchased a California '08 Nonresident OHV Use Permit for my rig for the Hammers, and will be using it for the Rubicon in early July as well. I figured I would follow the rules of the sandrail and put it on the left side visible from the rear and would be fine. I have'nt had a problem yet, but have'nt ran into any law enforcement officials yet. If I am wrong in my assumption someone please tell me.

I"m Military stationed in CA. I have all my junk registered in Idaho. I have 08 OHV Idaho stickers on my stuff that cost me 10 bucks a year and they seem happy with that on the trails.

I was reading thru the info on back of the ohv map that came with the permit.

It says "out of state visitors must purchase a special Nonresident Permit if their off-highway vehicle or snowmobile is not currently registered in their home state."

It sounds like if I have my home state OHV sticker then I am ok? I have the non resident permit too now. I just want the trip to go smooth and make sure I am legal.

irregardless of whether you are current in your state, you still need the non-resident sticker if you want to ride here in California legally.

Are you sure of this? The idea of the non-resident sticker was for vehicles coming from states that do not require any form of registration for off-highway only vehicles.

That is not true. If you have a OHV sticker or your vehicle is registered out of state you are fine anywhere a CA OHV sticker is honored. I talked with them extensively about this and that is the information they give on the website http://ohv.parks.ca.gov/.

2008 Decals
Nonresident OHV Permits
All vehicles operated off-highway on Public Lands in California are required to be street-licensed or registered as an off-highway vehicle (OHV). If you are visiting California from another state and your vehicle does not have current registration from your home state, you must purchase a California Nonresident OHV Use Permit before you go off-roading.

The Rubicon trail is actually a non-maintained County road and by federal law cannot descriminate against those who are registered out of state. This is also how Jeepers Jamboree can gain a Parade permit and prevent people who aren't registered with them from accessing the trail when they do.

The Pacific Ranger District (530)647-5415 in Pollock Pines CA is the final word on what and when the trail is closed and by what standards registration(s) will be judged.
