ZF auto - search on here and other sites...the "22" is the stronger unit (or was it the "24"?)...

...its off of the 4.2 LSE 94-95 RR (from the scrap yards where I got mine)

The 4HP24 is a computer controlled automatic transmission found in P38 Range Rovers and Disco IIs. 24 guts in a 22 box make for a supposedly more robust transmission than the stock 22. Also, there are claims that 22 clutches from a BMW are also more robust.

The 22 is a completely mechanical automatic transmission that is fairly robust and long-lived in stock form.

so is the transmission out of a 96 disco completely mechanical? i know ashcroft sells a standalone ecu that he lables as being for the 22 or 24. what application was the 22 computer controlled if not in the late D1's?

I have a trans from a '97 DI in my '95 DI, no electronics other than neutral safety switch.

AFAIK, none of the DI transmissions were computer controlled, all of them in P38s and DIIs were computer controlled. There is significant interaction between the ECU, T-case and the Transmission controller in the 4HP24.

I'm sure Dave will chime in and enlighten us all.

Go talk to Ashcrofts about an R380 to replace your LT77.
It'll bolt right in and unless you've got something ludicrous in front then it'll be plenty strong enough.
