: Moving rear axle back

I've been running 4" lift CJ springs with SUA and am now going SOA with the 14 bolt and want to push the axle back approx 6". I'm thinking Wagoneer front springs, off-set spring perches and possibly re-drilling the hole for the spring pin.
Is this too much to do to the set-up? What's the most gain that can be accomplished with off-set perches?
The Waggy springs will give 2.5" I was hoping to get 1 to 1.5" by off-setting the perches and possibly 2" by re-drilling the pin holes.

Any thoughts or knowledge you can pass my way?

Thanks

The waggy front springs will net you 2"

If you have long spring perches you can get another 2"

I have redrilled center pin holes in springs but never ran the spring long enough to give an honest opinion about them. I never liked the idea of having the extra hole in the spring.

You could always move the hanger as far back on the frame as you can and extend the rear portion of the frame like a certain somebody here did.

I think alot of people have moved the hangers back, and a friend of mine is doing it right now (IndyCJ).

I've read (never done) some bad things regarding redrilling the center pins. I think people have broken the leaf under a decent amount of stress. You might search about that one.

I would just add to the frame in the rear and move the hangers.

I was under the assumption the Waggy springs gave 2.5" - oh well..... what's a .5"

Building my own perches, so that shouldn't be a problem.

I have about the same feelings about the "extra" hole in the spring. Thinking of getting the 7 (or is it 8) leaf Waggy springs like High5 runs.

Thanks Slut

Thanks for the comments Insayn and Meyer.

Anymore comments on the spring drilling? Anyone here done it and ran them long enough to give a statement? :D

Thanks guys!

i am going to swap out my narrow trac axles in my CJ-5 and use full size cherokee front and rear axles and my CJ springs
i am also going to extend my frame in the rear about 4" and move my rear axle as far back as possible
it will be SOA with hysteer and saginaw steering

where in texas are you from?

Moving the spring hanger and shackle hanger rearward, is a very effective way to lengthen your wheelbase.
It does not require an enormouse amount of fabrication, and you can do all of the fabrication on the rig while its still driveable, then swap everything rearward in a few hours when its ready.
I moved mine rearward about 7", and the front forward about 5".
I use a combo of FJ landcruiser, and grand waggy springs in the rear.

Why not use the Waggy springs then?

I'm West of Ft Worth about 20 miles - town named Aledo

i could be wrong though
could someone help me out?

Hope you guys are moving the gas tanks or using a fuel cell, because if you don't, you going to bash the hell out of it. A friend of mine moved his Dana 60 rear 7" back and now his gas tank is his dump stop:eek: Yeah pretty much a dumbass thing to forget, but now he's going with a fuel cell in the back. Just a reminder:beer:

Yes, Cherokee (XJ) springs are flat, and even a little negative arch, from the factory after they have settled for about 5+ years. Mine are about 12 years old and I think they have sagged at least an inch. Soon to be replaced. :vader2: :trooper: :vader:
I believe the Wagoneer springs being talked about are the 44044 springs. I think this is a Rancho part number for 2.50-3.00" lift springs for fullsize wagoneers. Corrections anyone?

Well, you can either get the WAGGY Rancho 44044 lift springs which give around 4" lift (I believe) or just go stock with the 7-leaf packs like ones from JC Whitney like High5 runs. Looks like I'll be doing the latter of the 2.
Oh, and BTW: yes, I'm lifting the fuel tank. How could that be overseen?

just to add another question to this thread, is there a way to move the axle back, say 5" and still have a good place to mount your shocks that wont limit droop - all without going to a fuel cell? (assuming a 14 bolt with a 2" springover) thanks

does anyone know what amount of lift a waggy 7 leaf pack would give...say as compared to a OME 2.5" spring thats twizted to shit??...this would be SOA in case you need to know
also...which position 7 leaf pack would you use in what position??
ie..front waggy on rear/front? rear waggy on rear/front?

On this issue regarding offset holes in springs any opinions on where the hole is? What I mean should the long side of the springs be forward or rear? Also any ideas or experience on what if any affect it will have in both configurations?
Getting extra wheelbase project is set for this fall I was thinking of using a longer spring with offset hole perhaps a custom set from Alcan but the long side would be in front? The goal is to get 6 to 8" Im thinking perhaps hole offset of 3 or 4" and moving hangers as well. Of course the waggys would work and be cheap I could always move the hangers back more, what's the length on those waggy springs anyways?
Btw H8 I remember seeing a pic of your rear spring hangers poking out from the frame rails are there ay of those pics around somewhere?
