: 351 C or M ?
N_Rod 04-08-2008, 07:34 AM Looking to buy a truck I found, Its a 76? Ford extended cab. The owner says its a Cleveland, However I dont think a Cleveland was ever offered in a 4 wheel drive.
How can I tell the difference between a Cleveland and a modified.
I already searched
ford150/428/dud 04-08-2008, 07:57 AM The 351C was never offered in a pickup only the 351M/400. The 351C has a small block bell housing like 302 and 351W unlike the 351M/400 has a big block pattern (460/429).
I believe the intake is narrower on the clevelance compared to the 351M/400 which has a intake width of 12.7in (head to head)
The 351M/400 will have an extra casting by the distributer.
Also the water outlet will be a few inches higher on the 351M/400 than the 351C.

BeefCakeScout 04-08-2008, 08:43 AM the cleveland was offered in trucks, but only as an option. The ABSOLUTELY easiest way to tell the difference: Crawl under the hood, passenger side head, nearest the firewall, there will be a 2 or a 4 cast into it.topside. the The M blocks have and M or nothing at all. Or you can check the deck height. 351C has the same deck height as a 400M where the 351M is lower.
Hope that helps
BeefCakeScout 04-08-2008, 08:45 AM or if you are REALLY REALLY REALLY lucky, the ID tag will still be attached at the coil mount. that will be a giveaway

No. The M has the same deck height as a 400. The Cleveland has an inch lower deck height.
1970 was the last year for the ID tag under the dist mount bolt. all the newer ones have a valve cover sticker.
JGVABronco78 04-08-2008, 11:13 AM The 351 Cleveland was never offered in pick-up trucks. The 351C was available in some 70 to 74 Rancheros, which Ford calssified as trucks, but it still could not be had in an F-series.
The 351M was not available in trucks until 1977, and the same goes for the 400, which are identical engines except for the crank and pistons. There is no physical way to externally distinguish one from the other unless you check the engine displacement on a known to be original sticker on the valve cover of a known to be unaltered engine. It is the Cleveland that is 1" shorter than the 351M/400, and therefore the Cleveland with the narrower intake manifold. The 351C was available in cars from 70 to 74 only. the 400 was available in cars from 71 to 79, and trucks from 77 to 82(roughly). The 351M was availble in cars from 75 to 79, and in trucks from 77 to 79. Most trucks prior to 77 would have had a 360, 390 or 460, except F-100's could have also had the 302. It could have also had a 300-6, but we are talking V-8's here.
The bottom line is if the engine in the truck is supposed to be original, it can be neither of the ones claimed, therefore the owner does not know what he has. My guess is a 76 with a 360, or a 77 with a 351M. Check the build date, If its after August of 76, its a MY77. Also, if the emblem is on the side of the cowl instead of the fender, its a MY77.
fordman1978 04-08-2008, 11:39 AM the 351c was also an easy swap into the 70's fords. and i have seen quite a few that have them swapped in.
N_Rod 04-09-2008, 04:14 AM I talked to the guys son who swapped the motor in and he said it came out of a 78 Bronco, so that would make it a 351 M. I went ahead and bought the truck for parts for a restoration I am doing. It came with a tailgate that was put in the guys attic the day he brought the truck home and been there ever since.
This truck has something else that is kinda unusual, it is a F-150, but has a leaf spring front end. I will probably just try to sell the front and rears for someone doing a build.

I think Mr. N would probably like you to snap some shots of that axle and provide him with the BOM from the axle, and the real production info from the door tag and safety sticker if still available. He's trying to catalog all of the available styles of the 44.

never in trucks. I have swapped one, and when hunting for a 400 crank in pickapart I found one in a 70s truck. easy swap to replace a 302.
C heads have the 2 or 4 cast into both corners of the head.
so no need to dig around the back of the engine or on one side or the other, there will be 4 spots to see the number casting
M and 400 are same deck hieght 10.2, 351C is 9.2
