: Funky Sound????
Z_speed96 07-14-2002, 05:11 PM When I shift in from forward to backwards (like backing out of my driveway type of move) There is a poping sound that comes from the back of my zuk! I checked the springs and it's not them. It to me sounds like ( I hate to say it...) the rear driveshaft or joint or hopefully not the differential.:( But what ever the sound is, it doesn't seem to effect anything, it's just makes me nervous. Have any of you that have had samurai's longer me had this problem.
mudlite 07-14-2002, 05:19 PM " Doctor, it hurts when I do this"
Doctor" Well don't do that!"
Hard to say what the sound is. You will have to drag a friend around on a dolly under your truck ( Super Dave style). He will have to listen for the mysterious sound.
Um, any noise is not good noise. Diagnose the problem, and then fix it.

Shrock 07-14-2002, 06:27 PM Why is it that I can always tell a newbie post from the subject :flipoff2:
mud-magnet 07-14-2002, 06:51 PM   ......... fawken newbies.......:flipoff2: :flipoff2:
moose island4x4 07-14-2002, 07:20 PM my guess universal joint
spencurai 07-15-2002, 12:17 AM my guess is that the noise lies in the grease resevoir for the reverse lights. if you dont keep that topped off the reverse light has a bad clicking sound when you shift from forward to reverse. this is not the reverse switch on the tranny....it is in the bumper. get under there and check the grease resevoir for the reverse lights and maybe change the blinker fluid and filter. it is a pain in the ass on these samurais but you might even have to pull off the weak ass rear bumper and recycle it before the clicking sound stops.
fawkin newbies:flipoff2: :flipoff2:
it is a u-joint. pull the shaft and rebuild it.
Z_speed96 07-15-2002, 12:45 AM Its an honest question. I have no Idea, Im used to building car audio/video systems for the Sac Kings cars and putting 22's on suburbans and Esclades and $hit like that. Im learning this stuff as I go, you dont have to be rude. For those on this board who like to help, Thank you. Yes I am a "newbie" but thats what you do you ask questions.
zuk88 07-15-2002, 06:10 AM A loose ring and pinion might bind a little pop when going into reverse. Do you have a locker?? They pop alot also. Your best bet is to start with the u-joints and go from there.
scwafish 07-15-2002, 07:06 AM I know of several people who had similar sounds come from parts of the rear brakes coming apart inside the drum, pull the drums and make sure everything is in place.
Is you zuk stock...maybe it has a lockrite?
Dont mind the hecklers...they're just messing with you, its a newbie hazing thing.

This BTW....
lilZookithatcould 07-15-2002, 07:19 AM My lockrite pops too. I wouldn't trade it for anything though.
Probably is linkage as the other guys say, but have you checked your fluid levels in your tcase and tranny lately??
mud-magnet 07-15-2002, 08:43 AM no, might be low on back up fluid...............:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:  :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
One way to test it would be to get on hard concrete, go in reverse as fast as possible, push in the clutch, put it in first while your still travelling backwards at a high rate of speed, and pop the clutch.
It should become obvious what the problem is at that point.
He he
Welcome :flipoff2:

Well first off, go under, hold the driveshaft close to the Ujoint in one hand hold the flange in the other, and in a twisting motion see if there is play.
Secondly, congratulations for not taking your flamage out of hand like others have, as its all in good fun. You will get flamed until you are not a newbie any more, or are like MudMagnet, the Honorable Newbie, asking newbie questions.
Remember
:flipoff2: good
:flipoff: not good

Welcome :flipoff2:
Try downhill backwards on hard, dry concrete ... works better.
zukimoo 07-18-2002, 06:29 AM you guys forgot about the muffler bearings....their back there and with all the back pressure from the BIG engine you might just be putting too much stress on them............especialy if the grease in them is dry.
now seriously, remove the rear drive shaft at the rear-end and try to move the flange with your hand....if it moves a little, imagine how it moves under engine power.........good luck.
"Snap Crakel Pop" the sounds of driving a zuk......all that engine power..........
From one newbie to another.....
spencurai 07-18-2002, 07:22 AM who was it that stated that driving a zuk was like piloting 900 different parts moving down the street in close formation........after 15 years everything pops rattles and squeeks!!
Spencurai,
I actually laughed out loud when I read your post. That is good stuff...."900 parts moving down the street in close formation"
:D
