what do you think about modifying this forum to include the austrian made steyer (pinzgauers and haflingers) as well?
just a suggestion, since they are somewhat in the same category with the mog and there already is a thread going on these rigs.

PS: i'm stoked that there is a mog/g-wagen forum now cause i totally dig it and have learned more about these rigs in the last 10 days then in the last 10 year without access to this kind of information!:D

I helped start this forum and I have no problem with the idea.

The Gwagen was designed ans is built by Steyr-Puch.
Mercedes-Benz only makes the engines, and the badges, in some countries... In eastern Europe for examples, Gwagen are (were?) sold under the brand PUCH only. Sort of sharing the markets...

On a sidenote, the design of the G was also sold to french manufacturer Peugeot, provided they only built them for the french army, with their own (2.5 diesel) engine (which they did.)

By the time the company was steyr only, I think they were only manufacturing guns.

Pinz, Haf, G are /or were all made by steyr-puch... Until 2000... when Automotive Technik was sold the licence and tools for building the Pinzgauer in their UK facility. Now Steyr-Daimler-Puch is no longer building the pinzgauer.
(Automotive technik was the official importer and modifier for the pinzgauers sold to the british army. The brithish army started buying pinzgauers almost just when the swiss army stopped. Now they are buying DURO...

I don´t care who designed the G-wagen. But the G-Wagen is only built by "Puch" not designed and they did not the construction. Cherokee´s and Voyager for the European market are also built by "Puch" (only built!!).
Not only the Motor is Mercedes also the Transmission, the Transfer Case, the axles, the brakes, the seats, the steering parts, the radiator and so on. Only the sheet metal (and rost) is made by Steyer Puch.

O.K. So I gotta play devil's advocate. It can't be renamed Unimog, Pinz, G-Wagon, etc. because then that would leave out all the other really hardcore MERCEDES out there. You know, those G500, ML320 and ML500 that we always see out on the toughest trails. :flipoff2:

How about "European 4x4s," or "European Trucks."

That would solve alot of naming issues.

Just my .02 cents.

O.K. I gotta add another blurb here. There was a lot of bitchin' just to get a Unimog Forum. Now you/we got it and there's still people bitchin' about it. Just be happy with what is here now and live with it for a while. See how things go. It seems that no one minds that G-Wagon (of course, cuz it's a Mercedes Forum) or any other vehicle similar to Unimogs are mixed in with this forum. So let it be and let's just have some fun. Can't we all just get along? ;) :flipoff2:
