: How do you solve a bad vibe?

Alright, I am trying to solve a bad vibration that I get when I am initially taking off and then when I shift. The whole tranny & t-case shudder like hell when I take off. It does not shake if clutch is engaged or disengaged fully. No vibe at 65mph. I think I have it narrowed down to either the motor mounts or the clutch/flywheel area (most likely), but of course I could be overlooking something. So, how do I tell what it is without tearing out the tranny to check the flywheel region.

If it is the flywheel/clutch, what would cause this: loose bolts? what? I would think it would shake all the time if something was wrong in this area, but shaking when clutch is action makes me wonder.

I took out the rear d-shaft and ran the front and the vibe was worse. The tranny crossmember is tight. The tranny mount is a new poly bushing with two bolts.

Background: 85 Jeep CJ7, SOA, 2 1/2" springs, D44's, 35" tires, CV rear shaft, shackle reversal, outboard springs in front, crappy 258, NP435, new clutch, new pressure plate, flywheel turned, correct pilot bushing from AA, and if you need more info please ask.

My rear main seal is leaking alright and that will be changed soon, could oil be getting to flywheel and clutch and creating this?

I know this is a newbie question :flipoff2: , but I just want to wheel and this is not acceptable for my rig.

Thanks for your time and hopefully your advice,
Jason

the rear main leak will not contaminate your clutch assy, but a leaky trans input seal will. make sure that's not what's going on although then you'd have clutch slippage from the oil on the disc and a burnt oil smell.
does the vibration only occur when the clutch is being actuated? if so, i would suspect the flywheel. just becasue it has been turned does not mean that it's perfectly flat.
try to narrow down when the vibration occurs.
there are 3 more factors in the clutch assy that could contribute to your vibe problem.
1) a bent finger on the pressure plate. or the pressur eplate not having been torqued to proper specs and in proper sequence.
2) a fawkjed up throwout bearing and or front bearing retainer on the trans itself.
3) the clutch disc itself could be bad.

personally i think it's one of those jeep things:flipoff2:
sorry, could'nt resist!:D

the motor mounts in thore things do give a lot of trouble too.:(

Alright, motor mounts = good.

Dropped tranny just now and:
1. throwout bearing is good + solid (it is new)
2. no bent fingers on the pressure plate.
3. I am going to take the clutch out in a minute.

But, there is a little side to side play on the input shaft. Is this bad or is this alright? Would this cause the shuddering?

I am also going to check to see if the shaft is engaging into the pilot bushing when I remove the pressure plate.

sounds like the flywheel is not flat!
the input should have some movement but not more than 1/8th inch!;)

What gears are you useing? If your gears are to tall the clutch will slip when you take off.

Everything looked good, but I talked to a guy at a tranny shop and he said since I put a remanufactured pressure plate in that was the problem. He said the reman is just an old one that is cut and since there is less material there isn't enough pressure for a heavy duty application in a truck.

So I went back returned the POS and bought a new one with matching new clutch, put it in and problem solved.

Don't buy a remanned p/p. Just buy new.

My gears are 4.56 and I start out in 2nd gear b/c the NP435 1st gear is useless on the street.
