I got a 9" and a Detroit will be here tommorrow I want to know of some places to read up on installing it. Its in a 9" so that helps then i'm not changeing the pinion so that helps. Or is it best to have someone else do it. I know if I have to ask I best not try but I gotta learn sometime. Can I get some tips or tools needed?

thanx

OK, I'll play! :D

This is an easy install! Remove your axles and drive shaft. Pull the third member and put it on the bench. Remove the locking tabs from the lash adjusters, remove the carrier bearing caps and remove the carrier. Zip off the ring gear bolts and tap off the ring gear from the carrier. Install the ring gear on the Detroit, torque the ring gear bolts and use Loctite on them (271?), press on new carrier bearings, (you do have new bearings, right?) and pop the carrier back in the third member. Put the caps on loosely and thread in the adjusters, Snug the caps a little and set the back lash to about .010". You will need a spanner wrench to adjust the lash. Tighten the hell outa the lash adjusters equally after you have achieved the correct lash adjustment (ie: preload the carrier bearings), torque the carrier bearing caps. Recheck the lash. If the lash is still correct, install the lash adjuster lock tabs. Reinstall the third member into the housing and reinstall your driveshaft and axles.
DONE! :flipoff2:
Clear as mud?
Tools: Spanner for adjusting lash
Torque wrench
Dial indicator for checking lash
Misc. hand tools
Specifications for proper torque and preload settings
Don't forget to put gear oil back in the diff when you are done!

Did I miss anything?
