So tried this in the newb section, but with limited results. Can somone visually verify the carrier in this 3/4 ton (8 lug) 10 bolt. Have heard that its not always guranateed to do the wheel spin test, i.e. both spin same direction locked, different direction open. Thanks for the help.

Have you done the test yet? Maybe you could save some time. If they both turn same direction with tranny in nuetral, its going to be some sort of posi. It could still be a wore out posi if they don't, but if they do, you are done. If they do turn in the same direction, make sure the brakes aren't dragging, and lower one side back down. Now you can get an idea by turning one wheel how tight of a posi it is.

Definitely does not look like an open diff.

It's been several years but I had a Detroit Tru-trac in a 10-bolt and am thinking that is what it looks like. I mainly remember a "block" held in by a bolt you removed from the center of the diff (versus a cross-pin) as you can see in the pictures you posted on the other thread......but again it's been probably at least 4 years since I owned that axle.

The spin test only works on certain types of diffs. If both tires spin the same direction than it is most likely a clutch type posi, if they spin in opposite directions (make sure the driveshaft is not spinning) it could be an open diff OR a couple different types of posi's (a Tru-trac and Gov-lock will both do this). A locker (Lock-right, Detroit) will generally either just spin one tire and it will ratchet, or be locked in and spin both tires.

It is definitely not an open diff, a Tru-trac is the most likely candidate as they are a gear posi.
