the funny thing about fc's is that it really makes sense, mine has a 103 inch wheelbase, is a crewcab, and still has a 6-foot bed. unfortunately it also rides kinda funny and going up or down hills is frightening. i think the cab over design is pretty smart for an expedition rig because it doesn't waste a hole lot of space, but engine access can be a bugger. it is inside the cab which makes it nice, but you need really good insulation to keep it livable inside. plus even though i think the fc is awesome it's too bad it didn't get all the cool portal axles and such stuff that the unimogs and volvos got. i've seen expedition mog, volvo, and rover FC's and even some cool old camper FC's that were driven to alaska and back.

here is a cool fc site if you want to learn more

Why not get an expedition rig that can really move some gear? A little Tatra is FC and this one comes with a tow rig and a trailer....

fc's only stock drawback is the tiny 6cly that they use, same from the m715. 149ci i think. troys has a hot sbc in it, in the stock motor location.

Given the money and inclination to go on an expedition type trip, I would probably start with a unimog.

If you really want to buy one, I'll sell you this one. You just have to come to South Dakota and pick it up. I want a $1000. Any questions PM me. It's a 61 FC 170 DRW.

To answer the OP question---hell yes.

which HEMTT platform are we talking about? Personally I would go with the FMTV. Far more maneuverable and (though still shitty) better mileage.

A Stewart and Stevenson Truck? Those are pretty cool but I don't think they sell them to the public. A 2.5T M1079 A1 Van would be a really nice platform.

all these huge expedition vehicles.... arent expedition vehicles supposed to be able to drive on the highway? i mean some of those things probably top out at 50mph. Seems like it would take forever to get somewhere.

I've been thinking this situation over and over again in my head...
In the farther north, up northern Canada, and Alaska-type regions, most of the roads (highways) are gravel, so you can't really get up much past 50 mph (80 kph) while still maintaining safe control of the vehicle.
Then in some areas of Central America, and probably most of South America, i would imagine the dirt and mud roads limit your speed as well, maybe even to a lower limit than in the far north.

While i have in the past continued to discount the larger/slower trucks, i'm rethinking that rationale...
The real limitation would be on standard North American highways. And if you're going to stick to those types of roads, you might as well buy a minivan for your "expeditions" right?

Personally, when I'm going on a trip, I stay far away from interstates anyways, which means a 55-65mph limit between towns. To me the whole point of getting away is really getting away, and slowing down to take it all in. If I feel the need to stay on the interstate, I might as well rent a minivan like blaster said and cruise at 80.

As a former LR owner, I really like the FC101, and almost bought one that I saw up in SLC sitting in a field. I also have dreams of building up a chevy/isuzu NPR truck, although to make it off-road worthy would take too much custom parts to rely on in the middle of nowhere.

it's an expedition not a race

also you'll find the faster you can go the more damage you can do to your vehicle. and when you do damage out in the middle of no-where you could be really f**ked. plus when driving back roads whether in the smokey mountains or the mountains of peru you don't want to be speeding around a corner you've never been on before and come face to face with a cliff.

slow isn't always bad. you see more when you go slow.

Actually that truck is being considered for use as a dezert chase truck. As long as we don't have to get anywhere quickly we are huge.
