What are my best options for increasing the strength and durability for my transfer case in my samurai crawler? I have a 1.6 setting up against a sidekick 3 speed automatic (2WD). I don't think Yota case is an option because don't you need to have a standard transmission or at least a 4WD tranny? I have passengerside offset D44's. Would something like the older Ford NP231's with AA between the tranny work? I think those were passenger drops right? What gears are out there for that and has anybody done something other then a Yota case (and of course the sami case) in their samurai? What did you do, details. Thanks.

check out OTT industries they have a kit to divorce yota tcases. also maybe a divorced np205 i dont know what the drop is but it is worth looking at. By the way how dose that tranny fit in the trans tunnel?

I'm not ZONA, but my friend has the Kick auto trans and we had to chop the tunnel out a little bit (he'll sheet metal it later), other than that it fits fine.
Yeah, not too much cutting is needed. Think I'm gonna just stick with the stock case since I already have 6.4 gears and custom skid. Getting the better output shaft though from TG to give a tad more reliability.

I think that a divorced Toy case setup would be the best if you were deadset on not changing the trans, a better option in my opinion would be to swap to a 4wd trans and then either an OTT kicker to toy case behind that, or run the track/kick case to SAmi case.
I think the old NP205 and 203 stuff is way too heavy and not worth it.

I've talked with a few fab guys and they say the same thing about the NP stuff. We'll see how well mine holds up for now - the only thing I hesitate on the Yota case is that is doesn't have 4WD high range reduction (I believe). That's not a huge deal if you have a 22r but with having only a 1.6 and the limited HP, I can see myself always having to go into 4LO to get anywhere in 4WD. Maybe I'm wrong. :shaking:

Toy case(s) = 1:1 in high range, no reduction at all
Not an issue running dual cases on an off-road only rig though, to move through light trail sections just drop the 1st case (crawl box ) into low and use the higher gears in the trans to move along.
I used to do that all the time in my Toy truck with a 3.0L, plenty of power to use high range, it was just easier to leave the crawl box engaged in 2.28 and use the tranny to up shift for speed. I know you're talking auto trans, but it should still work. You can run that crawler engaged up to 25-35mph and not hurt it.
