what is the normal life expectancy of a PSD?

I stumbled on a PSD tow rig that I can afford, but the mileage concerns me. 1999 F350 crew cab, PSD, 5 spd 4x4 with manual shift tcase. Usual options. The dealer is asking $12,900, but I'm sure it will come down. 202,000 miles on the clock. A lot of miles, but it got me to wondering what the average life expectancy is on one of these units. Being a 1999, they have to be mostly road miles. There was no indication of a 5th wheel or goose neck hitch, so if it did a lot of pulling, it was with the receiver. Any opinions? NOt sure I want to go into debt for a rig with that high of mileage, but thought I'd tap the collective for info.

It of course depends (203k to 1 million :D), but IMHO I'd say somewhere between 300,000 and 450,000. If it is an automatic, the tranny probably won't last that long if they have been used for towing. They rebuilds can be upgraded and are more reliable after that.

See if the dealer will tell you who the prev. owner was & call them to see how it was used.:D

i know a guy that has 480,000 miles on a 96 model,he had to change the auto tranny around 340,000 miles.but he only pulled a travel trailer every now and again,mostly just alot of highway miles.he has a new psd that will be a year old in sept with 82000 miles already:eek:

I've got 205k on my '94 PSD F250. Mines a little different than the new ones, but I have no doubt that I could get another 200k out of it...

All of our Sundowner horse trailers get pulled over the road from one of two places: Coleman, Oklahoma where their chassis shop is, or from Indiana where they install the living quarters. I've talked with some guys that haul them in (with PSD's and with Cummins) and they all say that they can get 1 million out of a PSD, and 700,000 out of a Cummins. That is with a load on the truck 90% of the time.

The only problems the drivers say they have are the typical things that we all get hit with. These guys always get their trucks serviced by the dealer at every interval, meaning they get the tranny done, the differential done, and all of that other little chit that the dealer recommends get done.

This truck more than likely wasn't serviced at every interval and had every service done like those guys, so it's a gamble to say how long that truck will last.
