I swapped in my new BB housing with detroit yesterday. My shop manuels say 5 pints aprox. capacity for the rear end. Most of the time this would be fine as the accepted practice is to fill to the bottom edge of the fill hole on the side of the third member. The problem is the EB housing has the pinion pointed to the sky. This rotates the fill hole to a higher level.
How much oil do you guys put in? A measured 5 pints? Or just fill 'till it comes out the fill hole(almost a gallon:eek: )?
Thanks,
Eric

If you fill it up to the fill hole now, it's going to just blow out the breather line. I think typically the fill hole is just above the bottom of the axle tube so some oil will run down the tube and lube the axle bearings....Best bet is to just add the amount the book says and you should be fine. Otherwise you'll just be filling the axle tubes with oil which maybe much more than a gallon before you reach the fill hole!

Fill till it runs out. The bearings are sealed so that dont eqaute.
Well, I did fill it 'till it ran out. :flipoff2: And yeah I figure there is an extra quart floating around it tubes. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't going to be a bad thing to have more than the recomended oil in it. I checked today with my local mechanic that I trust and he sayed don't worry.
I will say this about the new rear end, I REALLY feel that detroit. My F-250 is too big to be affected by it's detroit but the EB is small and short enough that I feel it pushing and pulling alot.
And it's Shiny too :D :rasta:
