: Is your 4.2 MPI still pinging? Wanna stop it?

Some of you guys may know this already, but there's an easy fix to get the ping out of your MPI. My dad figured it out on his so I thought I'd pass it along to you doods. He was sick of it pinging. He put washers in the pickup sensor to advance the timing. He tried 10 other things. Nothing was working.

He then decided to check his temp sensor (the one in the thromostat cover). He pulled it, plugged off the hole and actually put the sensor in some ice because the thing would run great cold, then when it heated up, ran like shit. Anyway, he "fooled" it into thinking the motor was cold. Ran 100% better. Then he plugged it back in. Ran WAY better. For some reason, the ice "woke it up". He has since replaced the sensor altogether now proclaims he has a brand new motor. More power, smoother and no more pinging.

Give it a try. Just passing this on because I remember the frustrating days when that system was in my rig. I got so frustrated I tore it all out and went V8 :D . Hope it helps some of you.

Footnote:
Just replace the damn temp sensor. :D

Thanks for the note!
I'll give that a try.

To help reduce pinging, you don't want to advance the timing, you want to retard the timing. (lower cylinder pressure and temp.) You don't want to put washers under the sensor, and raise it, you want to put washers below the bracket, and lower it.

The first thing you should do is install the DRB, and go to the timing function, and retard the timing. You can do this in 2 degree incruments up to 6 degrees total.

Changing the cts may help for a while, but after the pcm re-learns the new parameters, chances are it will come back.

Okay call me stupid, won't be the first time, but what is a DRB?
TIA.
