In any country there is either a rich community and/or a corrupt community...and since they were offered since 1971, I'd assume that the Rover V8 (from the early 3.5 carb to the late 4.6i) would be out and about there...in terms of spares, it has some in common with US V8s (Buick 215) so that can help as well...

Ten years or so ago the guys from FOURWHEELER (im pretty sure it was them) had a FJ45 wagon they used for expeditions, they yanked the 6 and dropped in a 22r citing it was the small block chevy of the 3rd world countries. I've heard in Mexico its toyotas, volkswagens, and old fords, anything else and you are SOL.

VW flat 4 by a large margin, and you can find it everywhere.

x3 on the VW. i think that is still the longest run of manufacturing for any car. also, there are not a ton of gas yotas in other countries, definitely not the places i go in central america anyway.

I am betting VW Diesel Engine. Good Question though. Great for Expedition type rigs!

of course a VW
not many V8s in developping countries & europe
I think Jeep or AMC 242 or 258 is a good option

ok so the vw seems to be winning, but i'm not sure it's the engine i want to stuff in my expedition rig. say i'm building a small to mid sized 4x4 for world travel, i want an engine that can be serviced just about anywhere including the US, but it will also haul at least two people an all their gear across deserts and jungles. what about a mercedes diesel?

Cummins B series are common everywhere, the 6BT and used in buses trucks and plant & the 4BT mainly in plant both are common marine engines too and as virtually all parts are interchangeable between the two. Another plus for me is they are easy to work on and all mechanical.

I would suggest the toyota 4,2 liter six cylinder NA diesel. (as found in the HZJ75). It's an easily maintained non turbo engine with enough power and good reliability.

Not sure about the what individual engine model is the most common but Isuzu is the largest Diesel engine manufacturer in the world.

I joined expedition portal a few months ago, and from everything i have read there (TONS of experienced people) they all say to go diesel for an expedition vehicle. ESPECIALLY if you are going anywhere outside of North America. Diesel fuel is much more readily available, and often times cheaper than gasoline. As well, better fuel economy means you can go longer distances between refueling, be that by choice, or out of necessity. ;)
And of course with an expedition vehicle, you're generally going to be hauling around more equipment=weight than the average commuter car, for the extra torque of a diesel engine helps move you along.
RPJ, why do you say go NON-turbo?
I'm looking into importing a 15 year old+ Toyota Landcruiser, 80 series with te turbo 4.2.
I've been reading they are awesome on longevity, often getting 400,000 km on them before any major problems.

There's also the problem with the octane level if you go for a gas engine, not all country have gas with the octane level as "high" as we do in north america so it can be a problem... Diesel on the other hand, you don't have to worry about that and it's available everywhere (while gas isn't)

Getting in on this late but I'd go with the Toyota followed by the Mitsubishi then maybe Nissan. They are more common in other places like Africa, Europe and Asia. I'd go with an older engine that requires no major electronics to keep it simple and more waterproof.

That link just gets you to autotrader's home site. But at least he can search there.
And the VW's are great for 1-2 people and living "minimalist". I'd like to see a couple with lifts just to get an idea how they look up a bit higher.

Of course Cummins B family is all over, besides Dodge trucks they are in almost all Case, New Holland, and Ingersoll Rand equipment. Not cheap but everywhere.
Not a 'yota fan at all, but south of your borders the 22r can be found, that means transplanted to..., in almost every make and model of other old cars and trucks.

That would be in north america only ;)
Even in Europe, the most common Ford engine would be the ones found in the Ford Transit, the biggest one being a Cologne 3.0 V6
I personally stand with the Toyota engines, they're everywhere in Africa, that's for sure (I don't remember which conflict was dubbed the "Toyota war" or something like this because of the use of Toyota pickups), the only place where they would be harder to come by might be in China and India... China because there aren't that many cars in the first place and the most common must be the ones made there (but that's speculations), India because they have a big car industry of their own... Ex USSR countries might be half-problematic since their 4x4 industry is pretty developed (AutoVaz, UAZ, Gas...), but I know that there are Toyotas and Jeeps over there...
VW flat 4...
bingo didn't they produce something like 100 million beetles with that motor ?
