: How to weld up 9" spider gears?
Flatty 07-15-2002, 08:19 AM I tore apart my 9" the otehr day, and I can't figure out how to weld up the spider gears in it. All I have is one small hole to get to te gears, and taht is not enough contact area to weld it up. Is tehre a secret to this? The carrier looks like a spool, but I know it is not.
Also how hard is it to install a mini spool? This is another option because they are so cheap.

JEEPRZ 07-15-2002, 09:10 AM Just get a mini spool IF your goin that route. Pull the side/ spider gears, but in the mini, reinstall,
FordPowr 07-15-2002, 10:06 AM you can pull the case apart and weld up the spiders...kinda PITA but it works.
I put a mini spool in a 9" I had and managed to twist the pin that goes through the mini spool and into the case. Since you have the welder might as well weld it up as the carrier/pin is the weak link either way.
Flatty 07-15-2002, 10:07 AM As for the mini spool, do I have to reset the backlash, and reset the gears. I have no clue how to do this so I am hoping I can get the mini in there without this problem.

inphobic 07-15-2002, 10:18 AM You'll probably have to set the the gear any ways unless you were careful and didn't remove the side adjustment. Don't waste your time trying to weld the gears. buy a mini spol for 25 bucks and a forged pin for 10 and put it back together. The case comes apart to access all of these internal parts when you take the ring gear off. You can go full spool for 130 and have the ultimate in strength. Good Luck Fatty :D :D :flipoff2:
Edit: you can usually find a race shop or a buddy to set up 9"'s for less than $50. There is a guy here in Kc that'll do ti for $25 and some brewski's.

Forget the minispool....... like FordPowr says, the crosspin is the weak link. Full spool or weld it. All you have to do to weld it is take the carrier apart. Really simple. Then weld the side gears to the case. You'll have to take it apart to put a mini spool in anyway.
edit: ohh yeah... you do have to set backlash on a 9"
inphobic 07-15-2002, 10:26 AM I've broke a 3.50 pinion with a mini and a forged pin.
Take it for what it's worth. Jake
Flatty 07-15-2002, 10:43 AM I ahve no clue how to set up the 9", so I may just drive with an open rear end until I can afford to get a detroit for it.

Robert 07-15-2002, 01:46 PM Flatty,
Get your parts together (spool, mini spool & pin, whatever) and I could set it up for you. Kind of a PITA, but if we could get together somewhere, 9"s are easy.
Is this thing a daily driver or only driver??

So I guess you were looking for the free route? What size tire are you running? If you have the third member already out then go ahead and pull the bearing caps make sure not to let the adjusters slip when you take them out. pull the the ring gear off and seperate the housing. know out the roll pin romove the cross shaft, remove the spiders and throw them away. Put a mini spool in put the cross shaft and roll pin back in. Bolt the ring gear back together and place back in the third member. Carefully make sure the threads are all lined up perfectly the way you took them out and tighten the bolts to spec. If your slow it will take you a half hour. Jake
Flatty 07-15-2002, 02:34 PM I willweld it up if I can. I have done this a few times in the past, and it works. This will be a daily driver for me. I know, spool is bad for a daily driver, so I am contemplating just putting it back together for the rest of the year until I can afford a detroit for it. The front of the truck has a lockright in it, so I guess that will do for the time being. I think I may keep it open for now.
Thanks for the help on this guys.
Robert, when I get the parts together, Iwill call you and if you can give me a hand, that would be great.
Thanks again

welndmn 07-15-2002, 03:09 PM Dimitri,
some used detroits sell on e-bay all the time around 200 bucks
jopes 07-15-2002, 03:22 PM got my detroit off of fleabay from a link from Mark.
It held together when I gernaded my 3rd member. now it has found a new home in another 3rd memer still running strong!
Gordon 07-15-2002, 05:38 PM are you 28 or 31 spline and what gear ratio? I have a welded 28 spline that had 3:50 gears on it. I don't remember where the carrier split is on a 9" but maybe 4.10 work with that. You can have it if it will work.
If you don't disturb the pinion it is incrediably easy to set the 9 inch back up after you install the detroit or spool. No shims no nothin just turn the collars until the contact pattern and backlash are right. Don't be afraid to take it apart. If you run into trouble plenty of people can help.
also there are tons of the ford trac locks out there for cheap to free. I gave one away a couple months ago. If you put new clutches in them they are a decent limited slip and last about a year. The tracloc carier is weaker than the open carier though.
jopes 07-15-2002, 05:52 PM I agree on the setup of the 9".
I saved big on setting mine up with the stock gears.
Flatty 07-15-2002, 09:37 PM It is a 31 spline 9" with 4.88 gears in it. I like the idea of a trash lock for now. I need something in back t carry me through summer. Maybe i should just wait for the detroit ina few weeks.
