ok i have a Hobart 175 that came all set up for gas, with a regulator and everything. now what i need is the bottle. what would you guys reccomend for a bottle size for a home shop? i will be welding a fair amount on my project but nothing like a pro.

also, the cart that came with the welder says it is rated for a bottle size up to 75lbs. what size of bottle is this?

thanks

I personally went with one of the smaller bottles... Since the shop I get gas from said they do 100% trade up's for the cost of the smaller bottle towards the bigger one. I figure there is no way to lose on that deal, if I need a biger bottle I trade up - no more than it would have been if I had bought it in the first place.

If I don't need the bogger bottle - I saved myself some $$$ on the bottle price up front.

Are you going to use C25 or Co2? Get a 20lbs Co2 tank or a 55-60 Cubic ft tank of C25

i was going to get Co2, but is there any advantage to C25?

dimensionally, how big is a 20lb tank? how long will it last?

Like DRM, I got the small bottle (50 lb?) but I decided to upgrade. I was able to get a 120 lb aluminum bottle for $45 more when I emptied the first bottle. Light weight and I won't run out on the weekend again for quite a while... My small tank lasted about the same time as an 11 lb spool.

About *so* tall, about *this* big around... that good enough for you? ;)

I will check the size when I get home tonight, and get a price off the invoice too....

Here they are on the back of my Miller 210. 60 cubic ft tank of c25 and a 55 cubic ft bottle of Helium for the spool gun.

The advantage to c25 is in weld appearence, it'll give you a fatter bead with less spatter. With a 175 I'd get a smaller bottle since the things pretty much portable. Might as well keep it that way.

I've got a 20lb / 60 cubic feet bottle of CO2 I use for my Hobart 175. You would really be throwin down some bead to use all of that up in a weekend! I now carry that same size tank for my homemade powertank setup so I have a backup if it actually does run out on a weekend.

They say the AR mix gives a little nicer weld than the CO2...but it is a lot more expensive and since I already used CO2 for onboard air I just went with that. If you use CO2 you will probably need to change the adaptor on the regulator you got with your Hobart... at least I had to.

ok, so if the C25 is reasonably more expensive than the CO2, is it worth it for the better weld quality? or do you think that it is more worth it to be able to use the same bottle for onboard air with CO2?

is there any difference in bottle cost between CO2 and C25?

The bottles should be about the same. The regulators are different (IIRC). Personally I use c25. Then again, like Old Scout said, its not that much more expensive here.

Same here, only a few bucks more, plus I like the 75/25. I have a 150 ft bottle on my Miller 175. I dont have to refill too often, but its kinda top heavy when rollin the welder around

I got the big bottle, 80 Cubic Feet. It was only $200 new filled and I don't have to go back as often. Heavy SOB but light compared to my 4 1/2 foot tall bottles on my Oxy/Acet setup. :D

If you plan to use it alot just get the big one. It's only $$$. You can make more next week. :flipoff2:

Here is a great website ( BB ) If you want questions answered about welding. I learned a lot of stuff here:

If you get a CO2 bottle and your regulator is a argon style you will need a adapter to mount up the regulator. There ~10.00.

ok, how much can i expect to pay for a 60cf bottle of C25?

I went with an 80cuft bottle for my Miller 175. It was like $160 filled. Personally, I like the argon/co2 mix. While straight Co2 will give you better penetration I like that I have less splatter to deal with.

just my .02 but I am by no means a professional welder....hell, now that I think about it...I'm not a professional anything.

I have a 320 cubic foot tank for use with my Millermatic 250X. Run about a bottle of 75/25 per 35# spool of .035 at approx 20 litre gas flow. When I run out of gas I am usually out of wire too! :D

Tank cost was $205 and about $65 for refill.

I just called my local welding place and got some prices....

I have a Lincoln 200 with a 128 75/25 bottle....It cost 36 bucks to refill......Im using it with .035 wire....

A 20# co2 bottle is 109 plus 14 bucks to refill every time.

a 50# co2 bottle is 132 plus 22 bucks to refill.

If i swapped my 128 out for the 50# bottle, it would cost an extra $100 for the bottle....then i would also have to get the adapter for the different gas for $10.

The shop told me that the 50# would last 3 times as long as my 128.

Hope this helps

Well unless your a pro and have an account they will not let you have the big bottles the pro's use. I think I have the 80# on my Hobart 175. It's as big as I would feel comfortable putting on the cart the welder came with. It's a little over 3ft tall.
Built a 5x10 ft trailer out of 2x3 box 2 weeks ago and still have about 1000psi left in the tank. :D
I messed with a little tank on a buds 110v Lincoln before I got my Hobart. I was doing a lot of sheet metal work and I could blow through a little tank in a day easy. I honestly think he had a leak on that welder. My Hobart is pretty miserly on the gas.
Nothing sucks more than running out of gas on a saturday afternoon when you still have a couple hours of welding to go. Get the biggest tank they will let you have. I caught a guy at closing at Pye Barker and he was in a good mood. Cut me a good deal. Sold me the tank and 11lb spool of wire for $150 +tax. It's about $24 a refill. I can down size and get money back.

I sure am glad Texas isnt like Georgia cause I like the big bottle so I do not have to get it refilled every other month when I am right in the middle of a job..

Never had that problem either. I bought mine though cause I did not want to do lease. I forget how much it cost me to buy but it's cheap enough to fill

oki just got back from the welding supply store (handy cause its 5min from my house :D )

i got a 60cf bottle of 75% CO2 25% Argon (C25) for $99 (filled). guy said it should cost me 18-20 bucks to refill it. oh yeah and he said i can trade up anytime too (like what DRM has).

guy even gave me a free pair of gloves! :D

i love that place.

Well, it sounds like my post is a little late, but anyway... On my MIG I have an 120 cubic foot which I use with C25. On the TIG, I also have an 120 CF bottle which is pure Argon. I also have a 20 CF bottle which I use for misc gasses, like when I need some special Argon/Helium/whatever mix. I'm pretty sure they are 120 CF, I might remember wrong. They are roughly 48" tall, and 6" diameter. They might only be 80's? I buy nitrous oxide (actually nytrouss plus from Holox) in the large bottles. Don't remember the stp volume, but they each hold about 55 lb usable material.

Filling the 120 CF bottles normally cost between $25 and $28 each. The 20 CF bottle is alot less. Swapping the nitrous bottles is about $190 for 55 lbs of material.
