Stateline campground is first come first serve. It's in the middle of the Cherokee Natl. forest it has no showers, just porta john type bathrooms. With the limited trails that are open now you wont have a problem finding a site for about the next year or so.

We stayed at Crawfords last week, Extremely nice cabins! The biggest pita for us was getting to the them from the north. Next time we go down there, we are going to take 75 to 64/74 into murphy and avoid the mountain and the roads all together!

Yea, until you figure out the trails are a good 30 minutes away. Stateline FTW. And yea, it's first come first serve. If you haven't been there in awhile it's worth going back. The FS completely redid the campsites I guess about a year ago now. It's still primitive camping but darn nice if you ask me.

It depends where you come from really. If you're near the TN side I'd go stateline. If you're closer to NC I'd hit Crawford's. I'm just about sold on Crawford's though. After the Spring Fling I'm sure you'd hear that from a lot of folks. It pissed rain for 2 solid days. It's hard to beat hot showers and washer/dryer when your sleeping bag gets wet or you don't have anymore dry clothes to wear. Also, Crawford's has water and electrical hook up if you want it. Stateline has nothing but trash pick up. Who gives a shit if stateline is 5 minutes from the trail head. Crawford's is guarenteed and you don't have to try and haul ass up there Friday night to find a spot. When they reworked the campground on stateline they actually limited the number of spaces and closed other areas down. Now there's less space to camp.

I've been goin there for a couple time a year for the past 15 years. I am tired of driving up down 1 all weekend. I have stayed at Crawfords, Tellico Cabins and all are nice. But with fuel prices and the fact you need to locktite every bolt on your truck before you go has made some long days alot longer. I always thought Stateline was first come first serve. But when the owner of Tellico Cabins said I needed to make reservations it got me thinkin. They know what goes on up there as much as anyone. Since I can't get the ranger I'm just gone show up and camp.

Just remember you can't drive your rig on the road unless it's tagged. That's another downer for me. I still have to tow my rig to the trails and find a parking space.

We are all street legal in my group. Talked to the ranger lady and she confirmed, first come, first serve.

Dude you're getting soft in your old age. Another point you reminded me of is that not only are you 30+ minutes from the trails at Crawfords, unless you're street legal you gotta tow from camp to the pay station, unload, and then load back up and tow back to Crawfords at the end of the day. At stateline I roll in, unload, and I'm there for the weekend. They may have limited the spots but if you go with a group it's actually better because it's $20/night as many as you can fit in the camp spot. We usually get 4-5 rigs per site.
Oh, and nothing beats being 5 minutes from the trails for those night runs. Your wife usually has you in the tent by then anyways though :flipoff2:

When I went the day before New Years, the ranger told us that we could only camp two per spot. I don't know if it has changed.

That's BS. It clearly says on the sign where you pay it's one fee all you can camp but you must be in between the railroad ties. Double check to make sure they didn't change the sign but this was in December 2007 right before it closed.

yeah i'm getting soft but it feels good when i got a inflatable mattress, hot showers, a damn fine cook and cold beer without fear of a ranger ticketing me.

Stateline FTW. Don't get me wrong. I like Danny, Chuck and Helen, but I'll be a son of a gun if I am going to spend 2 hours a day on T1 anymore getting to and from the good part of the trails. Trail 1 sucks donkey balls.
