I installed 4.11s in my M30 this weekend. One of the measurements was a tad too small. What do you think of these patterns?

Jay I'd say your almost there but the pinion is just an RCH to far away. Try to get the driven side deeper. If you don't want the opinion of a newbie then just run it.. looks good to me, what do I know anyway I only have 8 posts.

Pinion depth is off.

Also, check the pattern in more than one place on the ring gear. This will indicate abnormalities in the ring gear(piece of dirt under the gear, warped gear, etc...)

Decent pattern. Looks like you need just a touch more pinion depth.

Thanks all. That's kinda what i figgered. Unfortunately, the backlash is set at .004 here (factory spec = .005 - .008) Back to square one.

Hope I can find a shop that'll just press that ring gear side carrier bearing off for me and not charge me an arm and a leg.

And that, my friend, is why you beg/borrow/steal setup bearings before you do this job. Not bad for a first try- I was going to say too shallow and backlash is off, but I've been beat to the punch.

the pattern will go up the gear when you put power to it and open the backlash .005 or so more and it will make your pattern a little longer - your gettin within thousands of an inch keep it up- try to .003 on the pre-load on the carrier also- Jess

Yeah, I purchased another carrier bearing and took a carbide bit to the inside of it to use as a setup bearing. Started at .050 on the shim pack thickness and was at .012 backlash. Went to .056 and had .010 backlash. So, instead of checking again with .061, I simply ASSumed and this is what I got :emb4:

We got the carrier bearing preload set at .015 (factory spec,) are you saying an additional .003 preload will be good? Why go over spec?

Thanks for all the input,

at .015 preload i do not think the carrier would even spin- might want to recheck that- pinion preload is about 1-3 also- .001-.003 hope this helps-Jess

.015 carrier bearing preload per spicer and the Jeep FSM (and it spins.) The pinion bearing preload is 15 - 30 in-lbs, again per the FSM. Are we talking about the same axle here?

.015 is probebly factory spec's if you have a housing spreader to get that dude in there- i have always run .005 or less- but hey we all have our ways of doing stuff- Jess
