OK..... who has any dealings with these things. How much room do they take? What do they cost... etc. Are they like overgrown alternators?

I had one in an old truck, The generator was more like an old generator from an old 6 volt charging system instead of an alternator, and the power unit itself was under the dash and was the size of a toaster. the belt was removable and was on an overcenter type lever. It was a late sixty's or early seventy's set up so I'm sure they make a smaller less complicated set up now.
