Sebi1987 01-28-2009, 01:10 PM @atila
hello can you post pictures how you have connected the carrier system to the bed?ìs it strong enough?if you drive offroad does the carrier system not move and damage the cabin?if this will not happen i think its the best for me to do it like you.
excuse my bad english.im from germany.

I'd love to get one of those too.
dirt rider 02-01-2009, 09:28 PM I'd love to get one of those too.
With fuel prices so high last summer, that was the only way I could afford to travel! On one 3 day trip, my buddy and I camped each night, ate a nice dinner each night with drinks, and I spent just over $60.00 for the whole weekend and we covered close to 800 miles of dirt roads.
That poor bike has almost 30,000 miles on it and has been to Alaska, all over the western states, and completed the Great Divide Trail which is a mostly dirt route from the Canadian border at Eureka, Montana to the Mexican border at Antelope Wells, New Mexico.
atila 02-03-2009, 05:10 PM Theres 4 pieces that goes in the 4 holes on the top of the bed with a metal screw on each corner. Its supports all my camping gear plus my weight on the front of the rack without touching the top at all.

Got ft winch on, still working on the rear winch. Finsihed 1/2 doors, would love a full size spare- so it will go on top of the bed system when done, just bed rail high. Still working on under truck storage of my spare d-shaft (fits ft and rear), 4 spare axles, 2 burfs, and spare 3rd. Hope to go into Mexico by summer!:D
Don't know why exactly, but after looking through 21 pages, this is my favorite rig. More so than the decked out ones. Perfectly capable, not too big, great storage, and room for the dog!
love it.

JESSE_at_TLT 02-15-2009, 10:17 AM For the last few years I've been doing most of my off-road trips on two wheels (posted pics earlier in this thread), but I'm finally finishing-up my Tacoma (http://www.trailslesstraveled.com/vehicles/2/) (fitting up the last of the sheetmetal to make a usable bed right now). Should be perfect for those 1-2 week trips when I want to travel fast and light, only bringing camping gear and maybe a dirt bike or two.
http://www.trailslesstraveled.com/content/news/tacoma_fab_update96.jpg
And I just bought this M109 (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=734308) last week. It seems like a pretty solid truck. I just need to score a few more things for it, like a hard top, winch, and heaters for the cab and box. I'm planning on living / traveling in this rig full-time for the next few years; and I'm anxious to get on the road, so this is pretty much a full-time project for me until it's finished. But I know jack shit about motorhomes and campers AND this is my first military vehicle/heavy truck, so I'm still trying to figure out what equipment (appliances, electrical, water system, etc.) I should use. As soon as I figure all that out, I'll start working on a floorplan and then, well, then the real work starts.
In the meantime, I've started organizing all of my stuff into two piles (not literally). One pile is the stuff I know I want to take with me, and the other pile is stuff that I'm going to put into storage. I'm going to start living only out of the pile of stuff that I'm taking with me so that I'll have a better idea of what I need to make room for as I build this thing out.
I'll start a build-up thread when I rip into it.

Red Ibex 02-16-2009, 12:06 PM I don't think there are many vehicles from England on this thread, so I might as well put in my contribution
A 92 Isuzu BigHorn 3.1 Turbo Diesel Auto
I stumbled across it stock, as a fresh rust-free Japanese import, and have been messing with it for a couple of years alongside other project.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/moglite/Pirate4x4/IMG_0924.jpg
The water can mount is only mocked up at the moment, and the light near the spare has come off, as the ones on the rack are so much better
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/moglite/Pirate4x4/IMG_0943.jpg
The rear has handbuilt storage drawers, Engel, fold down cooks table, and a hot water heater :grinpimp:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/moglite/Pirate4x4/IMG_0373.jpg
I can fold down a platform, and lay down the airbed and sleeping bag, fine for a weekend away. Just don't expect me to retain my dignity when changing into my PJs
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/moglite/Pirate4x4/IMG_0486.jpg
There is an awning that goes on the side. Its a bit of a work in progress, as it takes 10 mins and ideally a couple of people to deploy.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/moglite/Pirate4x4/IMG_0537.jpg
The rear awning is a bit more trick, as it swings out from the sides of the roof rack, and only has one separate pole.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/moglite/Pirate4x4/IMG_0523.jpg
I've got some dark green waterproof material, to make the cover, but until I get a roundtoit, an ex-Army basha clips to the frame.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/moglite/Pirate4x4/IMG_0530.jpg
Its got load of other smaller mods
Dual batteries with split charge
Sat nav
Tints
Big intercooler
LED interior lights
etc etc
What do I use it for ? Hook up the trailer full of camping gear and bikes, and go and explore England and Europe.

Here's my '82 Hilux. I built the flatbed 5'x6' to accomodate plenty of gear and stowage. Once it gets a suspension bench seat and cage back there, all will be lost!:( I do have a roof basket/kayak rack I made for our cruiser the wife hates, so it'll go on the hilux after the seat addition.

Maroon Monsoon 02-16-2009, 08:45 PM gotmyyodaback. thanks for the pic. I was considering cutting my half doors so they'd eliminate the space where the handle was like you did, nice to see what it looks like. I'll continue pondering what to do on my rig, your pic is helpful. Your runner looks very nice by the way.
Since I've been giving my Toyota a bit more utility and it's running so much nicer now, I might as well put a pic of it on this thread. Here it is:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c68/crusher-destroyer/adventures/DSCN1756.jpg
there is allot done to it, my signature has a link to the build thread if you want more info on it.
my other rig is more of an expedition rig than this one at this point, but it's posted a ways back on this thread, so I figure no sense in re posting it.

454 TBI
78,000 miles

Cab has no back window, Has a boot to the camper. Dog can lay back there and still be part of the action.
Super clean, I love it.
sas is in your future, nice truck though!
Repost, that is a really cool score on your part!
Only thing better would have been a diesel. ;)
The pop-up campers are great though, so much lighter than a normal truck camper, lower COG, and WAY less wind resistance.
Sold the truck, kept the camper. Wanted a diesel and a 60 up front.
Scored this for $3500 and threw the camper on it. It's more of a tow rig but I have plans for it later.

They are very pricey IMO.
But, they are a self-contained unit with a pretty comfortable setting, and equipped fairly well also.
You can find them used with a significant drop in price, but you're still looking at a big chunk of change.
Alternatively, you could get a F/S 4x4 truck, add on a top-heavy slide-in camper that's also quite wide, and have about the same living area, but th outside dimensions are a lot larger.
Price would be less with the truck/camper combo though...

Maroon Monsoon 04-02-2009, 05:51 PM I doubt that's street legal anywhere in the US, however, just because it's illegal, doesn't mean you'll get pulled over for it. That S10 is pretty badass, is there perhaps a link to a build thread for it?
Mr. Mindless 04-02-2009, 06:14 PM If the bottoms of his bumpers/end crossmembers are less than 30" from the ground and within 18" of the outside of the body, he looks legal in NY to me. No tire coverage here, just "excess spray" so in the dry you're golden. If those are 37s I think he's at least 4" too high in back.
I love the truck though.

roscoFJ73 05-15-2009, 05:02 PM Thats a nice looking trailer Brent. Is coil sprung?
Hayes 05-15-2009, 05:55 PM Is it worth having the trailer over a bigger rig? Was the cost less to build the 2 door and the trailer versus the unlimited?
The Adam Blaster 05-15-2009, 10:28 PM I personally like the idea of a trailer vs. cramming all your gear into your rig.
You can pack all your stuff up well in advance of the departure date, then just hook up right before you leave.
And with brakes on the trailer, it's less strain on your rig's brakes trying to stop itself heavily loaded with your gear.
That's one of the Adventure Trailers that Brent has, they are REALLY nice. They have a couple of different models, and have recently come out with a new "clam-shell" style one that flips open.
The suspension system they use incorporates air bags and a trailer-arm setup. I'm not sure on the specifics past that, and I may not be that accurate on that part either...
dippert 05-16-2009, 09:21 AM the july issue of 'four wheeler' has a review of one of the adventure trailers. you're right about the suspension.

One of the biggest advantages of having a trailer for us is the ability to basecamp it and go out and explore. Come back and your beer is cold and waiting for you. The other great thing is take some of the load off the main rig and obviously the ability to carry more of everything; fuel, water, food, etc.. stay out longer. Fitted with an 80 watt solar panel we can stay out in the field for as long as we have food/water.

lol the crocs can be a bit of a worry:D i just try not to think about it.
the jimny is a fair bit different to a sierra and i dont think they can take

here is a good trick. paint ya car with glow in the dark paint and then you
don't need to worry about light when you camp.

Toy-Roverlander 06-11-2009, 06:51 AM I've got a '65 Series IIa LWB Land Rover as an expedition vehicle..
Ok, you can stop laughing now........
It's actually not bad.. cus I ditched the worthless Rover drivetrain..
Here's the specs:
- 3b 3.4 diesel engine
- H41 Toy gearbox with single piece transferbox
- Range Rover axles, 3.54 diffs
- Parabolics front and rear, reworked rear suspension and shock mounts (longer front leafs in the planning stage) with longer shocks.
- Full Range Rover brake setup, booster M/C dual circuit... the whole lot.
- 24V setup, with invertors for 12V and 220V.
- Dual batteries (so got 4 of them:eek:)
- Platform in the back to sleep on, 3 inch foam matress.
- Coleman 2burner fuelstove
- Waeco CF40 fridge
- 80 ltr watertank with purifier and electric pump
- Dual spare wheels.
- High-lift jack and full winch kit for it
- Lots of recovery gear.
- It even has a sound system with an Ipod, 2 speakers and subwoofer.
- Soundinsulation everywhere
- And ofcourse all the camping crap necessary, table, chairs, cooking stuff... hell, everything I could possibly need..
My other expedition vehicle is a '98 D1 300Tdi manual. Nothing fancy on it, no sunroofs, nothing.. It's only got aircon and electric front windows..
It's all stock.
It's got the most basic camping equipment in it. 2x 25ltr watercontainers, chairs, table and cooking stuff.. It does have a Hannibal rooftoptent though.
This one is my holiday vehicle in South Africa.......

Yeah, it's good isn't it...
Real handy. Now I've got the cooker, fridge and watertank outlet all next to each other.
I want to fit a flip-up shelf underneath that shelf with a seperate cable to keep it up so I have a place to put stuff down when I'm cooking.
Oh, and an awning... The weather isn't always that nice over here:(

I only invested what I paid for it plus minor expenses, I bought it from someone who had already painted it, changed the fluids, done minor repairs, switched out the tubes and tires, flipped the hubs. I paid a bit much for this truck, but if you want to deal with the surplus sites you can get them for next to nothing, just repairs.
So far all I have invested in it are two flashers, a civilian air brake switch, an oil/filter change, and then my modifications. It really is a great truck for being 38 years old.
Right now I'm working on a modern brake system. Single circuit systems are scary, but single circuit systems that also rely on air pressure being there + being on a truck that weighs 7 tons is even more scary.

Are those stock wheels? 15.5's / 395's? Looks good.
Are you on the steelsoldiers forum? There have been a lot of discussions about retrofitting something like the later-model (87+) dual-circuit brake system to these older truck, but I'd like to hear more about what you have in mind.

PAToyota 07-26-2009, 01:32 PM jesse you have a build link for that trailer? v. interested!
Looks like a U-haul box stuck on a water buffalo frame.
JESSE_at_TLT 07-26-2009, 05:13 PM Yeah, it's a 14ft uhaul box (including the 3ft cabover section) that I stuck on top of on a M353 generator trailer chassis. I posted some questions on SS about what trailer chassis to use (http://www.steelsoldiers.com/trailers/31289-i-need-enclosed-trailer-tow-behind-my-deuce.html) and I'm really happy with what I ended up with. It's a bit heavier-duty than something like an M105 and it's got a drop-frame, so the the top of the box is about 2ft lower than the top of Mah Deuce. That leaves me enough room to put a small boat on top of the trailer without increasing the overall height of the truck/trailer much.
I extended the tongue about 30" so that the cabover portion of the uhaul box clears the back of the M109 trailer when they get bound-up. Extending the tongue also increased the turning radius from 45-50 degrees to closer to 85 degrees, and that's been REALLY helpful when it comes to maneuvering the trailer and putting it into tight spots.
Oh, and these M353 trailers have 93 gallon belly tanks and another big storage container under the chassis. I'm going to have a Spinner II centrifuge and oil/fuel processing station in the trailer, so I'm stoked to have that built-in holding tank.
As far as cost (everybody asks), I bought the trailer direct from military surplus through GL for $260 and bought a complete uhaul truck for $650 (sold the truck minus the box for $200). So this is a VERY inexpensive way to go if you can do the work yourself.
I've got detailed blueprints that show exactly where I had to cut the box to clear the gas tank and the fenders, and I'll be posting those on the CAD Library (link in my signature) after we finish this project.
All in all, I think it makes a pretty kickass trailer package. I'm looking forward to building-out the interior after I get finished with the motorhome conversion.

Spence,
I just read through that entire thread on expetionportal and I have to say I'm quite impressed. In particular, I think the bumpers came out perfect! They really look like they were on there when it left the factory. I would love to have a rig like yours....preferably with a stout enough drivetrain to pull my Jeep around. :)
Congrats on a fantastic build!

aloharover 08-15-2009, 07:46 AM It's always been in the back of my head to build up my own Dormobile.
http://www.dormobile.org.uk/Images/landrover2.jpg
But I would want to stretch the 109 wheel base out to about 135ish first.
http://www.4x4offroads.com/image-files/1995-land-rover-defender-130-station-wagon-228.jpg
basically use a 109/110 4 door for the front half and then a 109 2-door tub for the back half.
The pop top would fit totally over the non door area, then a half rack above the doors.
But the dormo top is fiberglass and it would be easy to stretch that also.
Off course there is also this idea.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3011/2776943456_688d0e2c04.jpg?v=0
of course at the rate i work on things, it probably wont be done until the kids have graduated (4&5 now) and then the need for a 4-door isn't as great ;)

Series IIA Dormobile for sale (http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=45907)
1965 Doormobile original camper conversion Based on Series 2a 109 2 1/4 petrol it is in need of a total restoration which I was originally going to do but I just don’t have the time and to be honest the will power to do anymore as I have too many other projects on the go already.
It has a rotten chassis but comes with a genuine Richards unused galvanised chassis for a 2a 109 2 1/4 petrol.
The land rover is finished in the original very light sky blue that has faded grey, it has done 38,000miles with original logbook, manuals and some service history. It is all there and original but it does require a lot of work to get back up and going. I am lead to believe there was only 170 of these Doormobile campers produced so it is ultra rare and collectable.

No scary shit on that part of the Mojave Road, did have a rabbit post up in our camp for a while, but he seamed pretty harmless.
Have to get my truck done before September's Mojave Road mission, hate riding shot-gun on trips like that, going to do some serious photography stuff too, no more waiting to get the camera out until I'm 6 beers deep:laughing:
My truck is looking a little less than luxurious these days http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f306/maxyedor/8-2.jpg
luckyseven 08-23-2009, 11:11 AM this is my project expo truck it a 72 ford f350 with a cj429, huge oil coolers, dual tranny coolers, dana 70 rear, dana 60 front, two 100 gallon fuel tanks, an 80 gallon clean water tank, central heat and air, a 110 and 220 generator that mounts to the front bumper. This thing started as a movie production truck in 72. it housed the filming and editing equipment( all obsolete now) I havent finished the interior yet, but plans for a bunk bed set up... I think i took about 800lbs of stuff out of this thing. ill see if i can get some more pics of it... There is a platform that is about 3 1/2 feet behind the box bed. My yamaha xt 500 fits great on it.
there are 4 captains chairs that all rotate 360 degrees. The generator runs off the trucks fuel tanks, and can be controlled by a switch panel mounted above the drivers seat. There is an old ass power converter for the house lights, and 4 batteries total... There is storage all over the place. Diamond plate on the hood so you can stand on it with no problem:) There are motorhome style roll out canopys on both sides that I dont think have ever been rolled out. The stock rear suspension has 18 leaves in the spring pack :O i plan on replacing them with a set of leaves that will give this thing a little taller of a stance, and trimming for a larger tire. I would like 37s, singled out in the rear of course.
plans...
lift
exo cage
A 12k + winch or two
a propane BBQ grill, and fridge
a shower on the roof
a canopy for the rear
Jerry can mounts for fuel, or a fuel station ( toy hauler style)
Lights all around
inside and outside stereo
im sure more will come:)

Just read your whole build, nice work and what a find. I also live in the North East and to find a rig that rust free is a miracle whether in a barn or not. I dig the bumpers and was really surprised how long it took to drain the batteries considering they were going uncharged. A large part of my fondness of expo rigs is the bug out factor or hunting. With a little one due so soon I would suggest holding onto it with a death grip as replacing it once the baby comes will darn near be impossible. Kudos

Nice mountain bike, can you ride it as nice as it looks??:D
Corey 08-25-2009, 07:19 AM Thanks.
Pretty much, got my first mountain bike back in '88 and rode a lot of trails right up there where I was camping last week.
Took a ten year break from biking, sold the old one last year, and just got this one recently.
So I have been riding quite awhile, but easing back into it after being away.
My main goal with it is to get back in shape and lose the flab that has accumulated from age setting in.
Bikes has changed a lot I see over the years since I bought mine.

Nice! I know about the Mtn biking thing, I live by one of the most popular trials on the front range of Denver.
I use to ride a lot back in the early 90`s, but got out of it.
I don`t know if they make a bike to handle me now, 5'9" 280lbs. My best riding weight back in the 90`s, was 230lbs, and I use to ride 5 days a week starting out at 6000' elevation.
I should just stay to the weight lifting I guess, I wasn`t made for the Mtn biking,:D

Fisher 09-08-2009, 02:13 AM There seems to be a lack of Isuzus in here so I thought I'd chuck mine up.

100dollarman 09-08-2009, 03:46 PM I just got this M1010 Ambulance truck in---- I was thinking it may be a good start for a camper/expedition type truck. Whaddya think??
diesel. 4wd, auto, Dana60/14 bolt, ac and heat in the box, etc.
Fisher 09-08-2009, 06:07 PM Looks like a great starting point to me 100dollarman
Chainlink 09-08-2009, 08:56 PM 100dollar..... Great score, a few years back one with what ended up having 36k on it was for sale...i was told they wanted 12G's found out a week after it was sold(sat there for 9 months) they wanted 2200 for it. I swear I got screwed on that one.
I don't like the particular diesel in it but that's a minor thing with all that it has going for it. I wanted a long range hunting rig, part time family expo, bug out truck.
I am jealous.

This one has 25k miles on it (I think is original miles). Another good thing is because of the diesel, it will need no smog checks. You can put in whatever engine you want.
For comparison- this one is for sale for $4500. But I have alot of ideas for it if I end up keeping it--- I think the first things would be a 3-4" lift and some 33" MT tires. Winch, paint. The box would need some amenities added. There is already some good lighting inside and out. And alot of wiring. Fridge, LCD TV, desk for comp/dinette. Bathroom? Maybe.
I have been selling alot of these M109a3 box trucks for RVs lately, too. Here is a pic-
^^^^^^^^don't those only have a top speed of like 55? also can you make them street legal?

Chainlink 09-09-2009, 03:44 PM Those dueces and the like need power steering upgrades.... not to mention hearing protection. But fun either way.

Power steer is nice- but most Deuces dont have it. Still very driveable, and you get Popeye arms in the deal!!!
Some are not that loud--- depends if they have a muffler or not.

I have driven deuces in the woods...the sloppier and tighter got tough(yes i mean the truck). I know some guys retrofit power steering. Any affordable deuce probably wouldn't have it though.
Doing highway convoys could deafen anyone....maybe I have never been in one muffled not sure.

Coney Flats, and Middle st. Vrain trail. You might have already done it, but the excab Dodge would make it that much more challenging.:D

Because it's an LT not a Vanagon. The engine is in the front.

Yeah almost all wheels are 2 piece. split rims are the dangerous ones

the 38 special 09-18-2009, 11:34 AM Now that the rig is built I'm working on all the "self contained" stuff. I have master plan for the entire bed, to keep secure for 1st out of country trip.

This is cool, I want to see what you come up with to keep your storage secure on that out of country voyage...
the 38 special 09-18-2009, 11:45 AM I doubt that's street legal anywhere in the US, however, just because it's illegal, doesn't mean you'll get pulled over for it. That S10 is pretty badass, is there perhaps a link to a build thread for it?
I have done well with just mud flaps - just set them up to detach by pulling a few pins for the trail. as long as you dont break anyones windshield your okay...
but it throws up pretty bad mist still which is the whole reason for full fenders..
the 38 special 09-18-2009, 11:47 AM Why toyota didn't sell these in the USA/Canada is beyond my comprehension.:shaking:

chrisevans2645 10-08-2009, 03:08 PM this is my 1st post but i've been reading this thread and some others on here for awhile. this is my truck. i also got a matching truck bed trailer for it. i want to put a camper shell on the trailer and use that for sleeping and use the truck for gear. i've got a truck bed air mattress and removable florescent lights in the bed. the canvas is removable as is the frame for it. i have a baja 540c gps and now have a cummins in it and water heater for the on board shower. just waiting on the pump. i'm working on hooking up the warn 15000 hydraulic winch but need to find the right pto for my np205. unfortionatly i've never taken it out for more than a day and a half because i was in the Marine Corps and never had time or if i did have enough time i had no one to go with for longer than that. i really want to do some expiditions throughout the southwest though if i can ever afford it and find someone to go with. i have a galaxy 959 cb with a wilson 5000 antenna. i also have a wilson cell phone amphttp://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-sf2p/v647/68/70/660066523/n660066523_1324482_4676.jpg

Ok, maybe some of you already have some of this shit, but we're going to have fun building it anyway. :flipoff2:

Never Monday 10-17-2009, 07:16 PM So, how did it do in the mountains?
plugged along slowly. 25 up Monarch, 85 down. Most of the time 35-45 on usual grades.
Went to FL last weekend and held 65-70 on the way down and 60-65 climbing back.
and all at 25ish mpg.
I only burned 96 gallons coming home.

Scott39 10-29-2009, 01:24 AM Not mine. Just found this on craigslist here in Colorado Springs, CO. Its for sale for $13000. I would love to have one like it, put a v8, auto, and some 35's and love it to death.
I saw this one also, very nice. I would like to put the body on my 95' Dodge Cummins chassis.

What did you do to make it water proof
Is sheet metal just folded and screwed to frame, and then corner bent with checker?
Or is there special sealant used?
leman 10-30-2009, 07:50 PM my junk. nothing really done to it... yet. she gets me some pretty good places though. i really want to get some sort of shell or rack on the back. and atleast one winch on it. sell the bull bar and get an actual bumper for it. and get some decent all terrains.
like i said its not much but im a freshman in college and the main thing is just getting out there.

the 38 special 11-03-2009, 12:39 AM I have been reading this for too long and not posting my truck.
I finally decided on going expedition style with crawler influence - though it wont start for a while. I guess thats just mixed purpose and not really worthy of calling an expedition rig though. Here is it last time I drove it, before leaving it parked 2500 miles away.
Its getting new tires, wheels, sas with 3 link and axle relocated further forward, cage, windshield cage maybe, ladder rack (kinda) in the bed with canvas top, etc...
sound like a plan, or no?

That's a nice rig and you are very fortunate. Be proud, not arrogant, and have high expectations of yourself and good things will keep coming your way.

WOW BABY!!!!! Drool................................
thats awsome!! what kind of top speed does it run? can it run the highways?
more pics of the engine...driveline...back...front...inside...outsi de...:grinpimp:
tymbom 11-25-2009, 01:47 PM I love how the rear door on the crew cab has a mirror...
Dollythelw 11-26-2009, 03:45 AM Glad you like :)
Yep its highway friendly, I bought it in Germany and drove it back to the UK, its still on baby tyres but I have a set of 20" wheels now so it wont be long before its on single 14.5R20's all round. It cruises (on the little wheels) at 60mph so 70mph should be no prob on the adult sized XZLs.
The cab is pretty much silent, it has all the usual toys (power steering, 6 speed box, 2 speed transfer, air brakes, a WORKING  exhaust brake, erberspacher diesel heater, sprung cab, air sprung seats, gun turret) everything works and is generally mint condition :smokin:

The middle seat is missing but they turn up on ebay every now and then
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/13094%20edit.jpg
seats 4 comfortably in the back, we will adapt the bench seats so they convert into 2 bunks, we can get another 2 in the front of the cab, a fridge, a coffee maker and a playstation will go in between the front and rear seats (we drive some pretty long hauls)

thats about 36,000 miles from new. Maggie motors are million milers, plenty of life left!

Magirus BF 6L 913T, Magirus are the oldest engine makers in the world, these and Tatras were the motors specified for the vehicles working on the trans siberian highway, hard as nails.
The DOKA's (double kabine) were German army driver training vehicles hence the extra mirrors on the rear doors, they are kinda handy though :)
Theres a bucket load of overland LKWs that hook up for a meeting in Germany called Willys Treffen (http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31723), some ugly, some truly saucy - take a look
The other family friendly option was the smaller 90-16 but because of the all the junk we haul for racing we had to go with the 110-17 mother ship,
90-16's look like this, the THW has released a whole heap of them for sale so prices are pretty good if anyones interested;

mrstang01 11-26-2009, 04:10 AM Man, I wish we could get vehicles like that in the U.S.! Cool ride.
Munchies 11-26-2009, 02:39 PM Does the Bundeswehr auction them or something?
Dollythelw 11-26-2009, 05:12 PM yes although you have to register and submit a load of crap before you can bid, its a lot easier to keep and eye on mobile.de, plenty of cool kit shows up on there :smokin:
TachedOutOffRoad 11-27-2009, 11:55 AM All of these overseas rigs are pimp!
I dont have one rig for every occassion, I have a rig for each occassion :flipoff2:
I think an SAS, 22re, 87ish, 4Runner, 5.29s, lockers, 35s, with tent and Engel fridge, would be just about awsome. I guess I would call it a "remote camping" rig.
