I have a long way to go before it's capable enough not even sure I will finish it. I really would like to just keep this as is and build something bigger.

Dumb question:

Any high center of gravity feeling or issues?

Dumb question:

No, most of the weight is down low and when it is fully loaded it doesn't seem any more top heavy than my Xterra. It feels very stable. I have learned to take off road travel a bit slower now though as the van is big and very heavy (10,000lbs).

10k...wow. The south pole ice challenger 6x6 was only 8k when they weighed it before getting on the plane. I guess all that stuff inside makes a difference...but still, over a ton?

Oh never mind...it was 11k pounds without gear. Carry on. :D

On our summer trip I went accross a scale and we weighed in at 10,850lbs.

Here is my rig on its way from germany, should be here late May. It is a 1979 U1100 or 416 Unimog, which will be my DD and expedition rig.

I plan to put my fourwheel pop-up in the bed and keep the drive train all stock.

Where is this thing now? Have you done anything to it? I saw a two door that looked like that in San Diego with a sleep over camper on it.

Well thanks! I just didn't want to post stuff over in this part of the forum that was somewhere else but did think that it at least should be mentioned over here as my real plans were to use it as an expo vehicle and not a hard core wheeler even though it doesnt do to bad at that.

It is still a work in progress. I currently have it all tore down to do a lot of body work and paint. Future plans include a second gas tank behind the rear axle, on board air, an exo-cage with swing out spare tire and water carier, built in storage for camping gear, tools and spare parts and other stuff. The seats used to fold into a bed but I screwed that up when I did the rear suspension so I will have to refigure the rear seat so it can lay flat again. Also the side door will be converted to flip up instead of slide out and I want to figure out a tent setup that can be attached to the rear hatch and side door when both are in the up position. Oh I am also going to put lockers in and beef up the steering. At the moment this is all on hold as I have no $$$ but hopefully with my tax return I can get started again.

Here's mine- Been around the world (literally) once already. Plans to go cross-country and up to Denali and arctic circle next summer.
Took a lot to restore it- previous owner painted the truck with house paint and a brush over all the original markings/decals etc. It was a basket case just about. It has all the original equipment and documentation from the Longitude Expedition once again. Still have a few things to do to get it perfect again.

Here's mine-

How much weight do you have up on the roof and do you feel it affects the handling of the truck?

mrtoddb

Glad you like :)

Yep its highway friendly, I bought it in Germany and drove it back to the UK, its still on baby tyres but I have a set of 20" wheels now so it wont be long before its on single 14.5R20's all round. It cruises (on the little wheels) at 60mph so 70mph should be no prob on the adult sized XZLs.

The cab is pretty much silent, it has all the usual toys (power steering, 6 speed box, 2 speed transfer, air brakes, a WORKING  exhaust brake, erberspacher diesel heater, sprung cab, air sprung seats, gun turret) everything works and is generally mint condition :smokin:

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/13092%20edit.jpg
The middle seat is missing but they turn up on ebay every now and then

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/13094%20edit.jpg
seats 4 comfortably in the back, we will adapt the bench seats so they convert into 2 bunks, we can get another 2 in the front of the cab, a fridge, a coffee maker and a playstation will go in between the front and rear seats (we drive some pretty long hauls)

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/IMGP7691.JPG
thats about 36,000 miles from new. Maggie motors are million milers, plenty of life left!

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/13095%20edit.jpg
Magirus BF 6L 913T, Magirus are the oldest engine makers in the world, these and Tatras were the motors specified for the vehicles working on the trans siberian highway, hard as nails.

The DOKA's (double kabine) were German army driver training vehicles hence the extra mirrors on the rear doors, they are kinda handy though :)

Theres a bucket load of overland LKWs that hook up for a meeting in Germany called Willys Treffen (http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31723), some ugly, some truly saucy - take a look

The other family friendly option was the smaller 90-16 but because of the all the junk we haul for racing we had to go with the 110-17 mother ship,

90-16's look like this, the THW has released a whole heap of them for sale so prices are pretty good if anyones interested;

How much weight do you have up on the roof and do you feel it affects the handling of the truck?

The roof tent has gotta weigh 130 easy, and the Hannibal tank racks w/empty cans maybe 20. The rear gear box is kept empty most of the time except for a couple of folding chairs. I put my bedding etc in there when I head off to the woods, so it isn't too bad. The Hannibal rack is mostly aluminum. The suspension on this thing is horribly stiff. It's got the stiffest springs in it I've ever witnessed and it rides like a friggin ox cart without lots of weight on it. I recently had 1000 lbs of wood pellets in the trunk and it actually rode better. I'd change the springs to something that doesn't suck, but I want to keep it original. My other Disco had a Maggiolina roof tent and Wilderness rack and it made the weight more obvious when driving, but it has a soft and flexy suspension. Much better off road and on the highway- the tradeoff is in weight carrying capability and mid-speed handling.

Since the TV show this truck was in has been airing a lot lately in the US, I can't even go get gas somewhere without people asking about it and taking pictures of it.

Looked thru the thread and it's time for another two wheeler.

2007 Husqvarna TE610

She went thru various stages until I had it dialed in and by then it was worn out...20,000 miles in two years.

Nav system, Garmin Zumo 450 and Garmin 376c, plus a roll chart:

My favorite top plate rack that was on it for the final trip:

Added some wings to the skidplate and saved myself a holed case a time or two:

I did the OBDR on this last trip. I've done the whole thing before from Walla Walla to Lakeview, so I added a few things this time. Same screen name at adv and I still need to upload my gps files to the last report. I did the OBDR, Continental Divide and the Trans America Trail from Oklahoma back to home.

Posted this rig in here a while back and had a couple pics of a trip it took last year at this time. Started off up here in Maine, ventured down to Zipolite, Mexico and returned a little over a month later. My buddy took his wife, their daughter and a 180lb great dane named Ballast.

They also toted down a Rokon Trailbreaker on a hitch carrier.

Other than a brake caliper issue in the slums of mexico city, everything worked as planned.

i am so in love w/ my cummins. w/ only hand tools i was able to take pretty much the entire bottom end out in about 5 hours. it was my birthday so i was drinking a bit & just taking my time.

Well happy birthday! I love my 95' Cummins, NV4500, HD241 tcase. But I would go with the Atlas instead of the double. Why have two cases when you can just have one stout one.
I don't want to take apart my Dodge drive train, it is super clean with only 138k on it.
I bought it last year with only 120k on it it was like new when I got it, but I would love to use the drive train I have.

Just over an hour. They live right down the road from me, so you better let me know when you are in town. I'll buy lunch.

It is an Earthroamer, but I'm pretty sure the company went out of business...
(I see their site is still up though.)

C'mon down and check it out, send me a PM. It's funny I saw a sweet SMB in the Sportsmans parking lot a few years ago and spoke to the owner. He gave me a quick tour and was kind enough to answer my questions. Fast forward to March of last year...when we went to go test drive a SMB that we found in Montrose it turned out that it was the same van I had drooled over at Sportsmans. Destiny!

I don't really care if you have a stock rig to take you out to interesting places.
But if your rig is relatively un-modded, you should probably take a pic of it in an interesting place. ;)

and yet 20 yrs ago a stock truck wouldn't make the Rubicon. Today a Voltswagon can make it. Nothing wrong with a stock rig if it gets you to where you want to go. Hell in two weeks my expedition will be a weekend backpacking trip in 20 degree weather. My truck gets me to the trail head. The rest is done with black cadilacs. :flipoff2:

With all due respect, i think you have it reversed. Stockers USED to easily traverse the 'Con, but now a days not the case w/out much damage, etc.

When is the last time you traversed that trail?

If I can scrounge up a good 6bt or some other enormous turbo diesel, this will be my expo rig, I have only seen two of these trucks, this one and the other was for sale in arizona.

badges and title say its a 62 international C120 truck, so thats what i call it.

dana 60 front and a dana 70 rear, np205/203 transfer case, I'm assuming the motor and trans/truck are primarily of dodge origin. Trucks been through 5 foot deep mud and only needed 4wd to pull out a stuck ford!

Stock ish, I grabbed a disc brake dana 60 from a late 70's dodge van and the dana 70 i grabbed from a 78 dodge truck. Made my own wiring harness and after going through four sets of front wheel bearings, I realized the front axle housing is bent and the truck was parked. I'm assuming its a late 50's early 60's dodge L-6, but their is such little info on that series truck I have to pretty much guess and go by looks.

Okay I get what you are saying now. If the engine and trans is stock it's all International, and if the transfer case is stock, then you've got an NP202. There is lots of information on the truck if you now where to look. What you've got is a C120 Travelette (IH's version of the crew cab) It's a good old rig, have fun.

Do you have any pics of how you plan on making the bed cage to hold your RTT? Im planning on doing the exact same thing to my short bed DC Tacoma and I also plan on keeping it just below the roof line. I want to have a hoop that that runs behind the cab and also bars that run back to the back part of the bed which would mean the tent would have to open towards the back. Just looking for different ideas? Hear is a pic of what I kinda plan on doing but havent figured out the mounting for the RTT yet.

i know i posted my truck awhile back but here it is on a 3 day camping trip. in the trailer is a truck bedz air mattress and soft lightweight stuff like sleeping bags. i just stripped a camper shell that was falling apart but had a good frame. gives it sort of a covered wagon look. the heavier stuff was put in the truck. i'm thinking about using the fuel tanks to supply the truck or maybe a generator mounted on the tongue and building a 12 volt swamp cooler. i might add a tool box on the tongue also but i need to be able to jack knife it without damaging it. it did really well as long as i didn't have to turn aroundhttp://hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net/hs194.snc3/20154_236691961523_660066523_3225074_5527294_n.jpg

yeah the front driveshaft is a little long:D no, it's an eaton fuller but it's a 13 double over:grinpimp: with about a 12:1 granny low i rarely use low range in the transfer case. works great although shifting off road can be a pain with no synchros. the air is for shifting and the locker, air tools, and winch clutch.

Actually it was lying in the weeds next to that spot. We kind of figured the owners of the cabin we were getting to, at some point had used them in that spot. I couldn't imagine carrying those either.

[Hijack] what did you do to get the EF 13 speed tranny behind the Cummins motor?

SAE #2 flywheel and clutch housing, and a 14"flywheel and clutch. You're supposed to use the 1.5" input shaft but I went with the 2" anyway. the pilot bushing was a standard size and my clutch options were slightly limited but i got a twin disk easy pedal rated for 1200 or so ftlb's (or is it lpft?). that's more than i need and i just float gears anyway. I'm still working on a pneumatic clutch setup. someday i'd like to find a 8.9, p-pump it, and drop it in there so i could have a true jake brake:evil: thats way down the road though and i don't know if it's even possible

A lot of these posts are getting pretty lame - stock vehicles, pickups with a cap on them, SUVs with (maybe) a sleeping bag in the back...

Are you familiar with the 1955 London-Singapore Overland?

I'd get some more opinions on that one. The C series Cummins don't seem to be as reliable as the B series. The B series is one stout motor even compared to all it's bigger siblings.

the 8.9L motor is an ISL, not a C series, though it is based on the 8.3L C series, which does not have a real jake brake (only available on ISL and up) Exhaust brakes are available for the C series from Jacobs and others. The mechanical 8.3L is 12 valve and the ISC is 24 valve just like the B series motors. They also changed year models approximately the same time.

Scheid builds bad ass mechanical 8.3 CTA motors and 700hp/2000 lb. ft. is pretty easy to do with basic mods (injectors, intake/exhaust, turbo, pump, etc and leaving the rest of the motor stock.)

That would take care of pulling anything you could ever want :D

Yes, but what are you pulling that you need that much torque? Both of my Cummins ended up doing 500 and 600 ish foot pounds and that was plenty. Parts for the B series are easier to come by as well. Something to think about. Regardless your truck is going to be badass regardless. But owning a B series I think is the way to go. Besides, the heavier the engine, the worse the ballast. And even the 4bt's are just as heavy as most IDI diesels.

honestly i love the 5.9 but the only drawback is the lack of a jake brake. i know that exhaust brakes can work just as well and jacobs even makes one but i would love to have a true jake brake on a pickup. it's unlikely though. there is a guy on powerstroke nation who's boss put a 8.9 in an f350 but i hate computers

Well since you hate computers I can't recommend a VGT set up for a turbo brake then. haha.

First off I am gonna say nice capable 4runner. I have a 1st gen and love the runners.
Speaking in terms of an expo rig though, you seem to fall a bit short IMO. Like my own 4runner, it falls short of a crawler, and short of an expo, it is just a Nice capable off road vehicle. A good expo rig just has certain essential things for extended trips such as being able to go for a week with out stopping at the gas station.
Just my 2 cents

I agree. I mean realistically how many people out there who have an "expo" rig are taking it from the USA to Argentina etc? I get the whole idea of an expo rig going long distances here in the USA or into Canada and Mexico but when I think of a true expo rig I think of somebody driving across Africa or to South America etc. What one person feels or thinks is an expedition may differ from another.

that Fuso FG is one of the nicest camper conversions that I have seen. Most of them including Doug Hackney's looks like they were built by a three year old playing with blocks and toy trucks. :barf: Maybe they cherish function over form, but the Europeans and Aussies kick our asses on design and style in many cases. Are you Kerry on Expo?

It's a super special case. I got it from my father-in-law who bought it for the tow bill. I paid 1k for it and have 2500 in it thus far. The body work stillneeds to be done to the cab and that involves painting and some more money but the title is clear not totaled and the insurance company apraised it at 16k, if body was fixed professionally. Hey ya'll I am new, although obsessed with the expodeition rig concept. I have chosen a 93 Ford Bronco for mine. It will have a dana 60 Front axle, sterling 10.25 rear NP205 T-case with humvee rims. Onboard air, onboard shower, a potty inside for the little one but the shower tent off the front receiver hithc will also be a bathroom for myself and my wife. I am open to all advice since this is my first rig that I am building. Looking for the humvee 12 bolt rims and the Sterling at this time if anyone has one. Thanks and I hope the thread continues to kick butt!!

You can go right now to the classifieds forum and find both your sterling and the 12 bolts. Also any number of vendors on here have recentered 12 bolts for excellent prices.

Anyway, enough hijack. Some really cool rides on here.

It is not stock but not highly modified either, no SAS, ect. Don't think I would want to drive something highly modified on a road trip like this though....

It is an 04 with a S/C, lift and few other things. I built a camping platform in the back for the trip that has a 2nd battery, lights, 20gal water tank with 50psi pump & filter, storage bins and a sleeping platform. The rear seats are removed with an Engel 45L fridge and a "buddy box" in their place. Buddy box is storage and a platform for my dog to ride on, yes he went on the trip with me. I also have 2 fuel tanks giving me 38gals total. The longest distance between fuel ups on the trip was 485miles with a 1/4 tank left. I stayed in hotels a total of 15 days on the trip. Other than some air bag suspension dramas and a failed throttle body the truck did excellent. Never left me stranded and served me well!

We were rear ended in San Salvador, El Salvador....my truck took next to zero damage. A few scratches in the powder coating on my bumper is all. Luckily I have a stout rear bumper, reciever and frame plates plus a buffed up rear cross member. She also hit me just perfect to avoid damage....had her car been a truck this would have turned out differently. This is what her car looked like....I drove way! Like I said, the Taco is well tested now!

RPM&O,
I have been following your trip on Expedition Portal. I lived in Jackson Hole from 1998-2002 and have a green 96 Taco. I tried driving to Cabo with my husky Cedar in November of 01, but broke a front strut south of Ensenada and couldn't get parts for it because The Taco was only sold in Canada and the US. I limped it back to LA and spent my month off with a girl I met instead of going to Baja. The girl was fun but I wish I had fixed the truck and completed the trip. Life has gotten a lot more complicated since then and I don't know when I could get a month or two off again. Nice truck, cool dog, and bad ass trip.

Hey man....

That is to bad you were not able to make it down to Cabo and back. Did you try to just get a part shipped to you from the USA? And I guess it was to badly damaged to have a roadside Mexican welder fix it? I was constantly fixing my air bags down through Baja and a guy I was with got a hole in his oil pan from a rock. Everytime something happened like this though we were able to get it fixed pretty fast and continue on. Roadside mechanics can do wonders down there!

I had parts shipped to me 2x on my trip. Once in Cabo and once in Belize. It was a pain in the ass to get the parts but I got them and continued on.....

There is a dozen things like breakdowns that make a trip south of the border a real adventure. While nobody enjoys or looks forward to breakdowns, cops robbing you, random accidents and so on it is these things that make it a real adventure. Otherwise it would just be like driving to SoCal.

In a way I screwed myself by doing this road trip, first one like it I have done. But now I am hooked! I want to do it again asap! And now I know I can jump in my Taco and be in Panama in 7-10days! The first time is always the best but it is the first time that also makes you love it or hate it....me I loved every minute of it, good and bad!! :D

BTW...

Some folks I met from Montana (met them at the El Salvador/Honduras border) who were on their way home from Costa Rica had bought a 96 4-runner for $1200 before the trip. I tneeded to be re-wired so Ben fixed that. He put on new struts and shocks and tuned her up. He then tossed his 2yr old and 6 month old daughters in the rig along with his two large dogs and drove to Costa Rica and back! So if he can do that anybody can do this trip! :smokin:

I didn't really have a plan when I tried to drive down to Cabo so when the strut broke I went back to LA, fixed it and spent my time with the girl. I had just met her in Tijuana on a habitat for humanity trip right before I tried driving to Cabo and was actually pretty happy to spend time with her. I did fly down to Cabo that February with a friend and spent another month learning how to surf and hitching around Southern Baja. Back then I had no mortgage, no solid girlfriend, 1 truck, no real steady employment and basically no debt. I have a great job now as a firefighter/paramedic but it is a little tough to get more than a month off, a decent house that I built, a great girlfriend, multiple vehicles/projects and unfortunately a lot more monthly payments. Things are getting a little easier to handle though.

No probs on crappy gas. I carried a bunch of octane boost thinking I wouldn't be able to get super but was able to always get 91 octane or better on the trip. Best gas I saw was in Panama, 91 for reg and 95 for super. Super was $3/gal. and I got great milage with it. Here in WYoming I run 91. I changed my fuel filter 2x on the trip and both times it was clean. Never had watered down fuel or anything like that, truck ran great on the whole trip besides a failed throttle body which I replaced on the road.

Truck had 102k when I left and 117k when I got home so I did 15,000 miles on the trip in 13 weeks.

My tranny is still good. It did however start poping out of gear under a really big load while on the trip. Like at a stop and you punch it the auto will slip into nuetral. This seems to be a a problem on 2000-04 Tacos, not really all that uncommon. The S/C went on my truck when I bought it, it had 70k miles then. The tranny is not as tight as it used to be but not bad. I would like to do the valve body upgrade or just upgrade the whole tranny. I have a trans cooler so that helps. With a big load in the truck though on the trip I noticed it was working extra hard. I would like to just upgrade it and never worry about it again.

For those that care....here is my blog on the trip which is only done so far up to Belize.

It was a hell of a trip, soooo much fun. I am ready to do it again asap...unfortunately asap won't be until next winter.

Just an update on mine.
A few weeks back I had the new BajaRack MG (Maggiolina) model installed in place of my stock rack.

The AutoHome Maggiolina AirLand roof top tent sat way to high on the stock rack and was not to pleasant to drive in a windy situation.

My new expedition truck! 2002 Dodge Dakota quad cab, 4x4, 3.7 engine and auto tranny. Nice little ride. I will be adding a 2" lift (torsion keys and blocks) 265/75/16 Goodyear DuraTrac tires, a bed rail system for my RTT, I have already installed my GPS, CB, and waiting on my mount to come in to finish that install. I will be adding a CARR light bar to the roof as well as a front receiver hitch for a multi mount for a winch. I will be adding a dual battery system and a snorkel later on down the line. For now it works perfect for my needs, but it is at a decent starting point.

When we sleep...one boy sleeps on the floor behind the Drivers and passengers seatsm infront of the passenger captains chairs. The second boy sleeps on the floor between the passenger captains chairs and the bench seat. Our daugher sleeps on the bench seat. My wife and I sleep length ways in the back...with most of the gear :D

hopefully that makes sense

I have thick foam mats that are in interlocking squares. Everyone that sleeps on the floor gets 3.

Sleeping bags, wool blankets, or poncho liners serve as covers(weather dependant)

2 of our 3 are still babies...but we lay our front seats all the way back..the pass middle seat gets slid back and the front seat headrest hits it just perfect for a long bed (and the arms keep ya from fallin out..)..

the driver side is the same except we lay the middle seat out flat too..and we have a bed/bench in the back..the dogs sleep under the slidout for the couch..and theres an isle-way thry the middle if someone wanted to either bunk in it..or under the sections of the chairs that arnt the pedistals..

didnt have to really add anything..other than the bench in the back runs along the window...

My "expo" if you will. Mainly a pavement pounder/tow rig, but we do wheel occasionally and are working on making it more off-road capable. Still would like an Adventure trailer.

Avalanche 2500 8.1L/4L85E/NV246/14 bolt FF, 4.10s, Gov Lock
Currently on Pro Comp Extreme ATs, 265s.

Drawtite Class IV hitch, front Curt reciever, with Warn SDP winch, Warn Fogs, GM tent, lots of Coleman stuff to make the trips comfortable.

Been through Medano Pass, Engineer Pass, a few trails in Moab in the last year. Taking a 2500 mile trip up through Glaciar this year.

Not a bad setup. Different approach to current expo trends.

EDIT: What kind of fuel mileage are you getting? I actually worked in a shop where my boss had me go over a truck exactly like yours. He told me the driver was complaining about poor fuel mileage. He didn't tell me what kind of fuel mileage. After finding nothing wrong with it, he told me a hour or so later he was getting only 16 MPG.

Moral of the Story: Never work flat-rate, especially when your boss is a Neanderthal.

ramv

16 mpg? That's awesome! (With the Hypertech tune on 85 octane, if I drive 60-65 mph, I have got 16 mpg a few times). Usual mileage commuting and hauling my bike is 14 mpg.

Road trips it usually is 12-13 mpg (75+ starts knocking it down). Or with two bikes on the roof, it seems to not do much better then 12.

Towing the Dodge it gets around 8 mpg.

Towing two rigs (15000 lb), it gets around 6-7 mpg if I remember correctly.
If they had a DMax option, that would have been cool, but really I just wish I could have bought the truck I wanted but work wouldn't let me have a truck.

After this trip i decided to SAS it and here it is last month.

Towing two rigs (15000 lb), it gets around 6-7 mpg if I remember correctly.
If they had a DMax option, that would have been cool, but really I just wish I could have bought the truck I wanted but work wouldn't let me have a truck.

You need to post a pic of the Avy towing the Dodge and Zuke. I would have never thought an Avalanche could handle that setup.

The Dodge or whatever needs to be pulled...

Pulled the Dodge and Amigo (which weighs over 5 k lb) to Moab from Denver and back.

Have pulled the Dodge and Sami as well.....

Thinking of just a 2"-3" lift on the AVy...

Campground is near Tarryhall Reservoir on the south Platte.

Here it is with the Sami. Old pic, stock tires, no front reciever. I am running the AC Delco Performance brakes (slotted, cross drilled, upgraded pads)

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=704&pictureid=8034

Trailer is a 34' bumper pulll, 14 k GVWR, (15-16k lb parts through out, twin 7 k axles though), Could easily do 32' or less, but we have hauled two full sizes on it often and still have room with the tool box and spare tire mounted up front...

My buddy had a 34' bumper pull with the wheels under the deck, it weighed 4000lbs. I was looking for maybe a 28'. I would go with a flatbed 5th wheel style, then put a cabover camper on it, but my Dodge is an single cab. I plan on making my Dodge into a SUV for more seating, then use a bumper pull trailer.

Biggest problem with a bumper pull is you need a weight distributing hitch and it takes a little longer to hook up.

You also will find if you don't have the rig on it will ride rougher then a goose with the camper at the front.

My trailer was supposed to weigh in around 3500 lb

My other option, is a slide in popup camper, then just use a smaller car trailer.
Then if I just want to use the camper and truck, I can still go on a lot of easy to mild trails with the camper, and throw a dirtbike on the the hitch.

Do you plan on wheelin the Avy. much?

ramv
06-14-2010, 06:47 AM
As little as possible, as much as required. Mainly I drive it over passes, point A-B type stuff. I am not planning to take it out on weekend wheeling trips or even run moderate trails in Moab, just if I need to get somewhere. I have the Dodge for the fun stuff, and I don't have to care about dents or drivetrain damage.

Then check again. the 3.9 was retired shortly after the other Magnum engines, the 5.2 and 5.9. good job.

It is a 3.9, so bite me, it was a damn typo. Dosent matter because a 5.9 is in the works along with a 5 speed, and a manual t-case swap. Shortly after I will be adding a narrowed D60/D60 combo as well.

This is how it looked when I bought it.

Then with a spring over I took it out on the river for the weekend. It got some trail damage from riding so low, but it made it.

Used an old boat trailer because the original axle was very small and only had 12 inch tires with odd ball lug pattern. Put a lift on the trailer and some 33's. Gonna build a rack on the front to carry a ATV and storage bins and jerry cans. Also built the hitch with a receiver on it. That way when I'm pulling with my jeep I can us the pintle hitch and when I need to hook it behind my gooseneck or pickup I can swap out the hitch for a drop ball hitch. Still need to put some armor on the corners for trees and paint the trailer black.

Hannibal awning is fantastic piece of kit, seems to cope with strong winds with ease. Very tempted to get the extra side bits to make a room for changing etc and a bit of shelter. 130 has been a lot of work to get it trip worthy as i've done most of the fitting out on a budget! The standard 900x16 bargrips are 35" (or there abouts) so 37's will fit no problem. I'd go as far as to say you could fit 44's without too much bother.

Just your basic Cummins-powered K5. Range is ~600 miles on the 31 gallon tank. Currently it is running an SM465 manual, but due to an old injury of my left ankle working the clutch for long periods gets quite painful. So, I am currently working on swapping in an automatic. Since I wanted an auto that was relatively bulletproof I decided to run an Allison 1000:

http://defiant.blogdns.com:5002/Blazer/pics/6-27-10/r-DSCF3445.JPG

Current comm gear includes the standard, substandard CB and an Icom 2720H dual band ham rig. I want to add an HF ham rig to the mix when funds allow. GPS duties are currently handled by a Garmin 60CS, but I plan to install a large screen in-dash type setup (i.e. a Nuvi)at some point.

Other things on the to-do list are: Clean up the under hood wiring; Lower the truck slightly; 14bff/D60 swap (currently a 14bsf/10b); replace the bent sheet metal (I have straight OE replacement metal for the entire truck); redo the interior; add winch and lights; make new bumpers out of aluminum (gotta save weight somewhere).

was that engine originally aftercooled? mine is an industrial version out of a school bus so it's aftercooled and has an air compressor instead of a vacuum pump. i've got an intercooler for it but havent gotten around to converting it from the aftercooler. if it did come with one did you notice a difference in egts after removing it?

His has the P7100 pump... so, it should have been aftercooled...

NOW... Yes, you WILL see a reduction in EGTs with a intercooler..especially under load.....

BUT, if I were swapping a cummins into an offroad rig, I am not sure that I would swap the intercooler as well.... just that much more stuff to puncture, rupture, fail.....

My engine came out of a delivery truck, and it did have an intercooler originally. I plan to add one in the future, but right now it does fine without it. The engine is rated at 160HP 400lb-ft and the fueling is still stock, while the timing has been advanced to 15°. EGT's typically stay below 1200° even when pulling a long hill. The most I have ever seen was 1300°, but it was for a brief period cresting a long grade.

My engine didnt' have the typical Dodge setup of a vac pump and Saginaw PS pump. Instead, it has a Vickers V10-NF hydraulic pump for the PS pump - a typical MD truck setup.

chrisevans2645
07-20-2010, 11:08 PM
ok, mine has been getting up to 1300 on grades but thats because it's summer. how has the p/s pump been working for you? i have the same thing i guess but i think it's putting out too much pressure for my steering box though it could be that the box was already worn out. mine came with the 180 hp ve pump rather than the p7100. i was told it was turned up but i dont think it is. i'm thinking about increasing my timing some then when i get an intercooler and maybe water injection i'll try turning up the fuel

MaxPF
07-20-2010, 11:44 PM
The Vickers pump works great. It definitely gives more assist than the Saginaw pump on the previous 6.2 did.

I have considered water injection rather than intercooling due to space constraints. We'll see after I get the the Ally installed - the trans cooler will necessitate changes to the cooling stack, which will in turn determine whether I can even fit a conventional intercooler.

Have you considered just letting the engine breath easier with intake and exhaust work?

http://i731.photobucket.com/albums/ww318/phily911diesel/ISB%20Stuff/100_0523.jpg

Beyond drastically reducing EGTs, other issues are tackled with setups like these. Offset intake fixed. Fuel economy drastically increased across the board. Cylinder 5 & 6 aren't being starved for air (goes with offset intake issues). Power increased drastically. Engine lasts longer. Turbo spools faster.
