Eventually taking the bed and camper off the truck and doing a deck over on my goose neck with it.

Well, while I can't disagree entirely, I think backwoods shitbox is heavy enough, and with a lower center of gravity that it won't blow over in the wind or flop over on a steep driveway entrance. That Ford with the Lance looks like it could fall over if you blew a nice chili fart next to it. To even post that in the expedition forum is kinda laughable. I know there are lots of rigs posted in this thread that are NOT really expedition vehicles (mine included), but KenCarter/Bruiser should post up his bus in here if that truck is what this thread is degrading into.

I agree my set up isn't a full on expedition vehicle. I do take it to remote areas and camp with it.

The truck is setup to handle the load well. I wouldn't try a slalom coarse with it but I feel comfortable running down the highway at 70mph.

Feel free to come blow a chili fart on my rig, I hope it itches when it dries. :D

Hi
I'm new on this board, been drooling over your rigs for quite a while though

I'm from Denmark, so my English is pretty far from perfect, but hope you understand...

I have a 90' Suzuki Samurai, it used both for offroad competitions and expo trips. So far we've been in Germany, Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia, Checz Repuplic, Austria, Hungary, Romania - and planning to drive trough Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia and Latvia when the summer comes :D

It's a 1,3 with 4:16 t-case, Warn 8274, Rollcage, Safari Snorkel, 235/70-15 Goodyear Wrangler, mild lift (about 2") Old Man EMU shocks/springs, homemade roofrack and homemade rooftent and lots of other stuff as 230V DC, USB Poweroutlet and so on. The taillights are from a motorbike, and i made them waterproof:D

Yup - great differences from little Denmark :) - It maybe not be the most logical choice, as its small, noisy and pretty hardcore with its stripped interior and so on - but it simple to repair, goes nearly everywhere and with its big bumper and small dents its also perfect for the big cities around:grinpimp:

Don't know if you could call it a expo rig, but it is used as such, and is usually packed with food and water for a week or two:)

There are some great ideas for full-on Expo rigs here. Unfortunately, 80% are NOT Expo rigs. Some nice rock crawlers though. Here's an Expo blast from the past:September, 1977. Vizciano Desert, Baja California, 200 Km SW of Guerro Negro, on the way to Malarimo. (translation: bad to get to) 1970 Land Cruiser FJ-70, Cheeby V-8, locking rr diff, Hone Overdrive, 4" spring lift, Warn 8274 Winch, Con Fer Toyota jeep trailer, 83 gallons of gas (53 gal tank + 6 jeep cans). We had 5 people along on this trip with all their stuff in the trailer. The trailer main spring broke at the centering hole. After many attempts at securing the axle, we took the complete axle off and parked the trailer carcass between the tomba burro and above the windshield and reloaded the trailer plus the axle. All four springs on the LC were on the snubbers for the slow trip back to Guerro Negro. The driver and front passenger held the doors open to watch to make sure we were on track for 150 Km. This was an expedition alright.
When the trailer spring went south, we unceremoniously dumped it along side the trail and loaded up and continued on to Malarimo for a couple days. On the way back we loaded up like you see in the pic.

We couldn't afford a new one since they are over $100K similarly equipped. We bought this used about 3 years ago for a smoking deal at $62k. I have added about $5k to it in improvements like the axle upgrade, rear ladder, solar system, stereo etc.
I just finished a plumbing project in it to re-route all the water lines so they are all in the cabin. SMB had routed the lines to the water heater through the exterior walls so they froze when the temps got down to the single digits.

what's a rock crawler to some is an expedition to others. It's silly to argue about the name. There was even a silly thread about the name of this forum a while back.

You don't have to run a particular set-up of equipment to be "expo". I can take a week long camping trip in my IFS Chevy Colorado and call it an expo vehicle. It has 4 doors and soft topper mild lift on 33's, to some it could be an expedition rig. To me its a DD.

So what is required for expo?

$800 ARB fridge?
Gay ass wires from the hood to the roof line to fend off menacing branches?
Tires small enough to require I bolt on high speed metal planks with speed holes on my roof rack?
A packing list that leaves exactly two cubic feet for driver and passenger?
A snorkel two feet above my roof line?
A $1,000 ARB bumper with ARB key chain and ARB matching underwear?
A $1,000 laptop mounted to my $1,000 european laptop mount in my euro trim SUV?

Because that is the majority of what I see at expo-portal.

Whats left of my 2nd rig from 13 years ago, when it was stock. Parked it in the weeds till 2 years ago, drug it out, and been workin on getting all the parts together for my 5th rig.
Still a work iin progress, and at the rate my finances are going, may be another 13 years before its done.
Right now AMC 360, th400, doubler, and D60/welded 14b. Will have H.A.D. 1410 drive shafts soon, then it will actually drive so I can get moving on everything else.

Also going in at some point, among other things ......
TBI, stroked 401 w/ full roller valvetrain, engle fridge, a pull out sunshade off of one side, swing down tire/jerry can/high lift carrier, and ............yep, a hot shower.
Not to mention all the normal camping gear, tools, and spare parts.

My estimates put her weighing in around ~5500lbs when done, before I load up any gear.

Boatsided right through the doors, sounds fun to me!

Wont be that far into the doors, about 3/4 of the door below that body line is just folded up sheet metal lip. Only raising the sill plate about 1.5", cant make it too hard for the little wife to get in.

Fun part in gona be keeping it all lined up and straight when I cut the whole rocker section (full of cancer) and door sill plate out to do it.

Yeah, you have the posers too. But there are a whole lot of "here is my vehicle with no modifications that I drive on my 'expedition' to the mall" in here...
My expedition vehicle is my Dodge Ram, which is pretty close to stock, but I take it, and my truck bed tent, and explore the outdoors.. I thought that was the whole idea behind it? Just because I don't have every bell and whistle out there on my truck, does that mean I don't get to go exploring?

Here is my opinion on it.

Going on an expedition is going away for a week or more in a place you have never been and most likely will never go through again, through tough terrain and remote places.

Now just loading up the truck and going out for the weekend randomly is more of a camping trip. But I agree on the whole bells and whistles thing, but that's a poor stereotype created from expedition portal, I know whenever I'm gone for a week or two that I don't have much more then a cooler with food and a few crates/buckets.

Just my opinion though, it's what separates the difference between camping and an expedition.

..... asked him how he was able to come by an Oshkosh 8x8... they never sell them to public..... he rambled on about loopholes and insider dealings and black helicopter stuff....

He's just fluffing his story. There's several HEMTTs in private hands. Matter of fact, there's 5 MK48 power units for the PLS (a HEMTT variant) up for auction soon. I personally owned a MK17 unit that would have worked great with the MK48. But it just wasn't in the cards since the MK48's coming up are out in California.

Compressor is for the OBA system, suck/blow cooling fans in a sealed container allow it to run constantly for airtool usage, relays control air solenoids and each set of rack lights....

Everything is wired to the interior using OEM style switches and all rack wiring is hidden within the pipes...

Nice job, I realize the original post is fairly old, but I would like to commend you as not many people can design, wire and plumb as neatly as you have.

Here is my latest, dialed in for two people and it did good for a few weeks around Death Valley.

There is more to the bike than you can really see, the only thing left of the BMW is the engine/trans/swingarm/rear-end/rear-wheel/gas-tank. Took so much crap off of it that it's 100 pounds lighter. :smokin:

The last rig I built was a dual purpose street driven vehicle/hardcore wheeling rig that almost never got trailered anywhere. I'm just as happy spending a few days in the mountains exploring as I am beating it around on rocks (and I do a great bit of both).

I've seen a bunch of those roof or trailer top mounted flip out tents on here.

Question: How well do they hold up to wind (30+ mph)? No I'm not going to drive with it open, but I live in a very windy part of the world and would rather not end up sleeping inside a parachute that decides to take flight at 4am.

Corey

Most brands of roof top tents do very well in the wind.
I have read of some camping with winds at 50+.

The brand I have (Autohome Maggiolina Airlander (http://www.autohomeus.com/rooftop/maggiolinaAirlander.php)) is made to take high winds and rain.

I had no idea these things were that expensive
I bought mine back in March of 2008 for $2.4K I think, and a week later they shot up another $200.
Quite a surcharge since they come out of Italy where they are made.

The Autohome fiberglass ones are very high quality though.
Mine has been on the roof and outdoors 24/7 since it was installed.
I put a good coat of Meguiars Marine Wax on it once a year to keep the fiberglass protected from UV rays.
Right now it is pretty scungy looking from winter, but it all washes off easy at a coin op the first time I do it at spring.

what the fuck is that? :smokin::smokin::smokin:

It's an OKA, Australian built truck. Uses Dana 60 in the front and dana 70 rear, Perkins Phaser 110 4cyl 4.0L engine. Mine is about to get a brand new Cummins 6.7L ISB in it, along with 17 inch moto metal alloys and 37 inch nitto terra grapplers. Holds 220 litres of diesel and mine has 2 water tanks under the tray with a 300L capacity. Dual batts on slide out trays under the cabin, one each side.

The older models like mine, the XT and LT have the perkins engines, the new NT models run, the Cummins 4cyl ISB.

There aren't that many of them, well under 1000 made.

They come in a few different body configurations, single cab, dual cab, multi cab and bus, all on the same chassis and can be interchanged. Turning a single cab into a dual cab is simply getting the dual cab module and removing the rear of the single cab and bolting it together with the rear panel put on the rear of the dual cab module.

So far i have found it very capable, haven't gotten it bogged, yet. Getting a 15000 pound runva hydraulic winch for mine and running a pump off the back of the compressor of the cummins.

Here's my little "adventure" rig I've been putting together.

Two months ago when I picked it up. Bone stock, 235's, 3.27 gears.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/Outlawz4X4/Red%20Ranger/IMG_0532.jpg

What it looks like as of today. James Duff Stage III 3" lift, 33x10.50's, 4.56 gears.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/Outlawz4X4/Red%20Ranger/003-6.jpg

I have a few more things planned like bumpers, a rear locker and maybe a winch. For the most part I'm just trying to keep it fairly basic and reliable while still being able to do some mild off roading and still drive places comfortably. Hoping to hit up some of the back country discovery routes over in the lassen/modoc area and possibly oregon this summer.

If you buy the kit and weld yourself, you can put it at a bunch of different backspacings. If you get them pre-welded from TWF, you can only get different backspacing with the flat centers.

87 Subaru GL wagon. Always a work in progress and after taking mostly day trips for a year and a half I am completly rebuilding to be more reliable and expedition ready. Upgrades include everything from a 2001 Subaru Impreza (2.5l engine, entire chassis harness, heater/ac unit, guage cluster, radiator etc etc). Hoping to have a nice reliable 150hp (waaaay better than the 60 it was sweating to get out of its own way with) and should be in the 25-27 mpg range. Also working to make it 100% smog legal in CA. Other than the reliability factor it does what I want it to and hauls everything I need. The next big upgrade will be a sun shade/elevated tent platform off of the roof rack.

Well heres my little rover Rig.

Sportin Rovertym 4" lift with Land Cruiser OME shocks
Rovertracks "BEEFY" steering with OME Damper
Custom Rear bumper.
Procomp "Rock Crawler" series 87 15" Steel Wheels
BFG Mud Terrains 33x10.50R15.

I'm more of the rock crawling hence why the body has been cut in the rear
however I love expedition rigs I like seeing expo and rock crawling rigs together.

Badlands fairly often, but avoid Haspin. We have 255 acres 10 miles from there that I would rather be at. The pics include Badlands, Redbird, our land, Windrock TN, and GWNF in VA.

Ahhh Redbird I think is what I got confused with Haspin.

We should meet up and wheel sometime after I finish the SAS on my truck (July/August).

went through all the pics, some awesome stuff here! But some push the definition of "Expedition vehicles".

Maybe we need an official definition. A lot of these look like trail rigs, what equipment makes them expedition?

hardtrailz400

I think Expedition is more of how it is used than how it is built. I did a ton of expedition in a 2wd stock ram with a work shell on it.

What equipment is needed for expedition?

Roof Rack, RTT, ARB bullbar, superwinch, tree cables, ipf lights on bull bar and roof rack, nothing more than 33" tires, floppy hat, khaki shirt, metal fuel can, and a dog. All this must be mounted on. Land Rover or Land Cruiser FJ80s are the best everything else is far less superior.

Edit, oh yeah how could I forget a snorkel, ome heavy duty suspension, ARB fridge freezer, and anything else ARB sells.

You forgot about hiking boots with wool socks scrunched down over the tops. Oh, and shorts with a minimum of 10 pockets, shirt with vent flap and roll up holding button straps, panama jack sunglasses (preferably with leather side blinds), LED lightbars shining on at least 3 sides of the vehicle, HAM radio, and stickers in at LEAST the following designations: slee offroad, ih8mud, hummer recovery vehicle, ARB, Warn, and Old Man Emu.

so much for this being a picture thread:laughing:

started with an inherited 2001 chrysler voyager. yes 30" mud tires fit..... barely. then moved on to the explorer after the van started rattling apart. eventually got my winch mounted to it.

regarding the definition of an expedition vehicle, i think it should be anything modified to get you out in the wilderness and back. the deeper you are able to get in the wilderness in back the more respect you get. since this is pirate i don't expect the vehicles i posted to get much respect, and i accept that. the explorer is a slow build with one tons and 40+ endgame.

The truck was originally built so my wife and I could explore abandoned mines and ghost towns throughout Arizona on our own. I actually got my ham radio license just of that purpose. It's nice having communications gear which can "get out" no matter where you may be, cell service or not.

Over the years it morphed into more of a rock crawler, but that just made it a more capable exploration vehicle.

I have been drooling over this thread for a couple years now, time to share my 2 week old project. 2001 Ford F-350/ 1995 Jayco camper. Electric steps, TVs, Playstation2, Fox shocks, heavy duty springs.

Next steps is to get the rig leveled out, sell the 22-inch gangster MallCrawlers for something more appropriate and....

Dude those rims are sick!!! So when are we going to go see some dirt roads with this mall crawler? Hit me up for beers!
