Here is one of mine, I moved it out of the drift 2 weeks ago, it still had packed snow falling off the undercarriage yesterday. I drove it to CA and back several years ago, hit a few nice passes on the way home. I am gonna drive it more this year, it has sat for the last 5 years. Good timing for the new forum. I like it.

Did a 15 day self-contained expedition last October, including 9 days in the MAZE of Canyonlands.

Just returned from a 2760 mile trek to TX and back.

Not bad for a 44 year old truck with an old stovebolt 6.:)

far from the coolest rover out there. it's currently getting major fender surgery, diamond axles, king coilovers in the front, and super swamper 34x9.5x16.5 tires on military hmmwv wheels. every expedition rig should have tires no larger than 35's, and the narrowest tire made. they just look right.

It's also my daily driver.

1980 Scout II Traveler Turbo Diesel
Stock 33 gallon Diesel tank gives it a range of between 600-700 miles and with a couple extra nato cans the range can be extended out to around 1000 miles depending on trail conditions. I've taken it on the Oregon Back Country Discovery Route and totaled 1200 miles in 8 days. While this may not be alot by expedition standards, the truck did great, didn't miss a beat and didn't have any mechanicle problems, so if I wanted to do another 1200 miles it would have been up to it. With a weeks prep time I wouldn't hesitate to drive it anywhere. I'd love to be able to just get in it and go, but being it's a daily driver I can't keep in in "bug out" trim all the time.

Future upgrades are fairly simple. I'd like to do an SOA, full cage some better bumpers, 33's and a lunch box locker of some sort and call it good. I am a firm believer in keeping it simple.

I don't know if it qualifies as an expedition rig since I mainly run trails and rocks but I suppose both of my rigs would definately fill the need.

98DI with fox coilovers, GM 3/4 ton steering, rack, winch, jack, GPS, and all that stuff.

And my 86 Econoline 4x4, rack, GPS, 35's, and a bunch of other junk.

Maybe I'll do the vegas to reno offroad drive or the nevada/utah offroad drive next year.

For starters I would go with a canvas type canopy or a bed like what was on the above toyota. I would go for the Canvas top because it can be removed so you can use your bed when not exploring. Plus the canvas will look more explorerish anyways.

I would get a fuel/bed box that fits inside the truck and allows you to use the canvas top. You will find this useful when not exploring also. Or you could put another tank underneath the bed or put one that lies in the bed and put your gear ontop of it. This helps when going through Canadian customs too. They wont want to move allot of heavy gear.

My dad built one that was I believe 150 gallons for a Chevy and thy put three sets of tools and bags on top of it and never got looked at twice when going across the border. They drove all the way to Alaska from Washington and never filled up. That was back in his pipeline days as a heavy equipment mechanic.

For tires I would go with 35s or 37s. Cage is coming out with a new lift that will fit 37s max. I would look at an agressive mud terrain radial like the Toyo M/T or the Cooper Discoverer STT. Get one that is fairly wide. They will support the heavy CTD in loose terrain and work in mud, snow, rock, and sand. For clearance I might do some fender trimming to keep the CG low. For wheels I would either go Staun internal beadlocks or go with the Hutchinson Rock Monster two piece DOT legal wheel. I like the idea of two piece because it would make tire changes easier. I would also carry a matching fullsize spare. Maybe even 2. To aid in turning I would do a ram assist set up.

For traction aids I would look at either selectable lockers or Detroit truetracs. Personally I like the OX locker because it is siple and doesn't have selonoids or rely on electricity. Diff covers too if not going OX.

I don't know what kind of transmission you have but if you have an automatic I would look at upgrading it. ATS has some upgrade as you go stuff if you don't want to upgrade the whole thing but personally I would go to a built tranny from ATS, DTT, or BD. For engine I would just leave it stock or do some small upgrades. Another reason for upgrading the transmission. I'm not sure if I would go with a cold air intake or snorkel.

I would look at FabFours or ARB for bumpers. FabFours makes both front and rear. For a winch I would go with a 16,000 pound Warn or a Mile Marker 12,000 pound hydraulic winch. I would put large lights on the front bumper such as Light Force 240 Blitz. They are expensive but everyone in Alaska has them because they are the only brand that can survive. I would also do back up lights and rock lighting.

Build some heavy duty sliders with winch points and for that heavy of righ I would put a 2 inch reciever right in the middle so I could winch sideways. Something like the Warn 9.0 RC. It could also be used in the rear but for my money I would have two dedicated winches front and rear.

That was long but I hope my ideas help. These are ideas of how I would build it with some alternatives. Eventually I want a 96 CTD myself. Only I will mainly use it for towing and I want about 400HP and 1000ft/lbs of torque. Giving you ideas helped formulate what I wanna build mine to look like. I live in WA and for transmission I'm gonna go up to Canada because both DTT and BD are right on the border. Anyhoo hope my ideas help you out.

NO NO NO!!!!!!!
Most tire shops these days will absolutely not work on a 2-piece rim. There's safety concerns over those rims and shops won't work on them.

I skimmed through the rest of your post and there's good info there, but the 2-piece rims are a bad idea.

I didn't know that. The military uses two piece rims on the hummer right? If they aren't all that safe the DOT wouldn't approve them? My buddy works for Les Schwab and some of the guys changing tires I wouldn't trust with a two piece rim, including him. The saftey concern I would think would be the people working on them not the rim itself?

I understand there are several things that can go wrong and the rims could be problematic, but If you yourself are doing the work and can do it right where is the safety concern?

I don't have any experience with those rims but my limited experience with tires and rims, and confidence in my abilities tell me I could make them work.

Thanks, I just laid it out how I would do it. I usually have an idea of how I would build a rig for an intended purpose.

I agree with you on a number of levels, especially concerning the quality of work done by the grunts at certain shops vs. doing the work yourself.
The safety issue (as far as i understand it anyway) is when you are getting the bead to seat on the lip of the rim, you jack the air pressure up a bit to get the tire to "pop" and expand under pressure to push against the lip.
Sometimes the 2-piece rim won't hold and you have a couple of heavy chunks of metal getting blown through the air within the walls of a shop.
Even a normal one-piece rim and tire getting mounted this way can bounce off of whatever surface it is on and become a projectile.
A good tire shop should have a "cage" where they put the tire and wheel inside and they seat the bead there, where the operator is protected.

My real point on this particular issue is that you want the equipment/vehicle you are taking with you to be able to be worked on by the most amount of workers as possible. If you are truly into an expedition, you'll be in different countries and different terrains, and the possibility that you can sustain an injury leaving you unable to work on your own junk is higher than normal.
Even a sprained wrist or broken finger would make changing a tire (esp. on a 2-piece rim) VERY difficult, and painful. So, keep it simple. ;)
This is also why you pick a vehicle that is distributed and sold all over the world, not just Canada and the U.S.
Toyota Landcruiser for example.

1st cool, our mainuse for the 4x4, expeditions.

2nd Hummer two piece rims: They are easy to use WITH a beadlock insert. Some people use them without, personally I wouldnt. We just mounted a 12 bolt yesterday: a certain torque procedure has to be followed, or you will break a stud off. Also there is a max. 50 psi on the rim. The 8 bolt twopiece was designed for the biasply tire only. (max 30 psi).
With a beadlock, you air up the tire slowly (Of course a cage would be best, but who has that on the trail).

Mr. Mindless
04-21-2008, 07:03 PM
I would go with the 2 piece wheel myself, it makes internal double beadlocks easy to deal with when dismounting and mounting tires, unlike innertube (Staun) style. Having run H1 wheels on my rig and changed tires on them, I could do that with one arm if I had to (nothing to do with you Adam, just thinking about trail injury) to patch or replace a tire. I have a hard time working tires on and off standard wheels by hand myself with full use of all limbs, and have come closer to injuring myself working with prybars and tire spoons than with a wrench and 8 studs.

The H1s and other solid-type internal beadlock wheels don't suffer the slings and arrows of bead seating either. How often is that something without drama, especially on the trail? I've had to resort to explosive seating on the trail (one reason I carry lots of straps now), surely a 2 piece wheel with a solid internal lock is safer than that?

Adam, where's the buggy build thread? You still on for the BBQ?

I can't call my Dak an expedition rig. I'd jump in it any time and drive it across the country, but with only about a 250 mile range and a measly extra 4-5 in a can in my bed rack that's no remote location explorer. I'm usually known as the rolling toolbox for my spares and tools, but have only one spare tire, no OBA yet, only carry an extra gallon of emergency water, and have no onboard comfortable sleeping arrangements, but I do always have my camping gear, CB, cell, GPS, etc....

It speaks to where I wheel it most. It's seen trail time in CO, NC, NY, PA, MA and VT but rarely further than I could walk from a main road. This is still a forum that I'm going to keep an eye on, I really respect rigs that really get way out there and can be self sufficient.

The Adam Blaster
04-21-2008, 07:12 PM
Hey Mike, i lol'ed at your one arm comment.
And then i remembered waaayyy back at one BBQ when you helped me patch the hole in one of my tires. Fun day!!! :D

The buggy is still in Windsor, my friend has it pretty well sewn up, he's making some final adjustments to the rear lower control arms. He tested it out in his front yard by driving up a living tree.
It turns out the lowers got tweaked a bit because of the stress. Apparently because of the portal axles, the geometry is a bit different, and we didn't take that into account.

Anyways, still on 2-piece rims, i'm not sold. I'll just take extra spares with me when i go.

OlympicYJ

TAB I agree with you but I also agree with Mr. Mindless. You both make good points. Thanks for setting me strait. I wouldn't be afraid of running a two piece in a foreign country as long as I carried spare O rings and any critical parts. Farthest I'll probably never go would be Guatemala or S.America.

If an injury is bad enough to keep you from changing a bead your gonna be in trouble period. Sans always travel with someone you know and trust. Just one of those things you take a chance on by being in a foreign country.

Mindless you make some good points. I've tried busting a bead on an M274A5. I'm gonna let you all search on that one; my gift to you. lol Anyways we drove a 3/4 CTD on top of the tire to bust the bead and it wouldn't go, heavy slide bead breaker no go. Finally had to take it to Schwabs and even they had a hard time with it. It is a single piece tube Alum. rim and it would not loose a bead for anything. Alas we live in an imperfect world and that's what makes it so great. Dare to be different and you will be!

I think I forgot to add On Board Air to my list of mods I would do. Very important that. Not sure if I would go with an ARB electric or York beltdriven.

My thoughts on this: ARB compressors are for lockers - period. If you need air for anything other than a locker, look elsewhere. ARB's simply weren't designed for filling tires or running tools.

My thoughts on this: ARB compressors are for lockers - period. If you need air for anything other than a locker, look elsewhere. ARB's simply weren't designed for filling tires or running tools.

While this is somewhat true for the older compressors (RDCKA), they were super slow on tire filling duties, but they no doubt got the job done when needed. However, the new ARB offerings (CKMA12) is a kick-butt electric compressor, over double the CFM's of the older model and a higher duty cycle. I wouldn't rule them out as a OBA solution, especially for low volume needs ie. 25psi to 35psi vs. 10 psi to 35psi.

NO NO NO!!!!!!!
Most tire shops these days will absolutely not work on a 2-piece rim. There's safety concerns over those rims and shops won't work on them.

I skimmed through the rest of your post and there's good info there, but the 2-piece rims are a bad idea.

The Rockmonster wheels are basically an aluminum version of the HMMV wheel. They are even made by the same company. http://www.rockmonsterwheels.com/ I wonder if you are thinking about split rims, which are a whole different animal.

What makes an expedition rig different from another type of rig? I've seen a few rigs in this thread that look like they are just off the dealer (new or used) lot. Some are clear like the Van and the mogs, but some look like they just put on a roof rack.

People's definition of expedition rig varies. For some it is a vehicle that can be lived in for months at a time, universal enough to get parts all over the world, completely self-suficiant while traveling long distances in remote areas. For others it is a roof rack, some Jerry cans and camping gear in the family SUV for a weekend outing.

Most people fall somewhere in the middle. I don't mind sleeping in a convential tent or roof tent. I would like a Engel frig so I can bring ice cream and some steaks along. An on-board shower is nice to have. I tend to rough-it more, but I don't travel out of country. Down Baja or north to the Arctic circle would be as far as I wish to travel. Mosty it is bouncing around the western states checking out remote, forgotten areas. For me there is so much unseen close by I can't justify traveling further yet.

I think the big difference between expo rigs and wheelers is that expo rigs form a better balance between off-road ability and long distance drivability, while adding options that make them better suited to remote unassisted travel. Most "wheelers" I run with pack a sandwich and a cooler of beer for the weekend. The Expo guys I have run with have milder rigs, a frig or good cooler, GPS, laptop and mapping software, a CB and Ham radio, food for a week or more in the rig, dutch ovens, higher quality tents, clothing, and sleeping gear, etc. etc.

My wife's rig runs a 60 front, 70 rear with 7.17s Powr-Lok in the front and Detroit Locker in the rear, 350/TH400/205 with a Warn 8274-50. Here's mine. It's a '92 Explorer with lockers, a mild lift and some upgrades to the transmission. I've taken it to Alaska (stock), Utah, California, Washington, and British Columbia. Some trips two or three weeks long, sometimes pulling a trailer and it has never been trailered in the 11 years I've owned it. Nothing fancy but it's comfortable, reliable and inexpensive to operate. It's taken me everywhere I've wanted to go and carried all my gear inside safe and dry. I haven't really driven it for a couple of years but I plan to get it back on the road this summer.

Some very well set up rigs in here:smokin:

Mine is slowly getting going.

07 Chevy 2500 hd classic. 79 hp ford front with Chevy outers, cross over, ford style cage radious arms and coils.14 bolt rear, locked with factory disk brakes. 6.0 engine, 2wd 4l80e trans, divorced ford 205 twin sticked t-case. The advantage of keeping the 2wd trans is the availability o them and price verse the 4wd version. This also allowed me to bypass having to use a factory chain driven computer controlled t-case and the issue I would have had with the V.S.S. if I were to swap to a 205 or stak/atlas or other. My front and rear driveshafts are also the same and full slip with just 1 in difference between the front and rear. I can carry just one spare stub shaft, and one spare drive shaft since the front acts as a back up spare for the rear.

4.56 gears with llr16 michelin xls and a 34 gallon tank. A.R.E. aluminum utility shell insulated with open access on one side and storage on another. Also have a roll out bed rack. Since I run a fire extinguisher business I also carry on board n20 and air tools should I need them.

The truck is bare bones, no power windows, door locks etc..hell it does not even have a seat belt or door chime:grinpimp:

Future plans are to build a false floor at top of the wheel well height and use the roll out bed for storage of tools, supplies, gear and spares. A well built roof rack and more fuel capacity is a must. I want to build a rear bumper and redo the front bumper and have a recessed winch as well. Other plans are to cut out the rockers and integrate 250 wall 2x6 in a factory looking set up to act as a buffer.

Next up is the cage and mounting the corbeau suspension seats and tearing into the 6.0 with heads/cam/headers/high flow cats and trying to mount an xj snorkel on it.

I do feel its tall but I lik the skinny tucked tires and they are stong as well. I may look into a 40 inch tire though.

Good cans literally will not leak a drop. This look like Wedco cans, which are a great can, metal construction, excellent design. I've got a fleet of the Scepter brand cans, also military spec cans, but plastic. Both as spendy, ~$50 & up per can, but you pay for what you get IMO.

holy nosebleed batman...what is that, like 12 inches of lift?

not really sure to be honest, I was not sure how tall it was going to end up and I wound up having to do a shackle flip in the rear just to get it close to level. At times it is higher than I want, but other times I love the advantage point. The truck handles really well to a point of amazement.

I can flip a u-turn at 30 plus mph with no worry. Ive jumped it, flew down the wash at speed and put plenty of miles on it. Tall yes.. but it still drives in manner that I am not concerned. I would not be taking a truck like his near crazy ledges or side hills even if it was stock, so no worry there.

I moved the front axle forward a few inches so it could come down if I decide not to go to a larger or wider tire. In the rear I am toying with the idea of using another set of fender flares I got from a wrecking yard to add 3-5 inches to the rear wheel well and have it look factory so I could still stuff the tire and loose some lift. the front end does have multiple height settings with the use of adjustable brackets I went with so i am not stuck with anything yet. Currently my steering angles are perfect so I have chosen not to mess with it till I make my mind up on tire size and choice.

You are set! I'm going to ask b/c it's not intuitive...the three cans on the top. Why lay them on their side? Don't they leak? All of the jerry cans I've ever had leak. I would imagine that it's just a clearance thing. Are they fuel?

Matt

Matt, the rack basket on the forward section of the rack is made to hold 7 cans standing up like that. They never leak. They're NATO cans. NATO cans have a terrific seal. Two are fuel and one is water. We also have a aux fuel tank under the truck with a transfer pump. We are capable of carrying 85 gallons of fuel total. The trailer carries 19 gallons of fresh water.

Thanks, Jim. You've got a couple of cool rigs yourself. I really like the van. Cool and practical option that you don't see very often.

I'm in the middle of another Land Rover build right now. '67 109 that's getting a Benz 617 turbo, NP435, Toyota centers, etc. Should be done by the end of the summer. First big trip is probably going to be up to Newfoundland and Labrador but this truck will get to Alaska some time in the next couple years. I'll buy you a beer when I get there.

Dana 44 SAS'd Mitsubishi Montero Sport. Almost everything that might break or cause problems has been replaced with commonly available parts. The Mitsu t-case is in the process of going away. That's being replaced with dual NP231s. I'll hold enough supplies for a week and a half for two and a week for four. Two can sleep in the vehicle so we don't usually bring a tent for myself and my SO. Loaded to 6400 GVW it still gets 17-18 mpg - and it'll go dang near anywhere off road even loaded. Also doubles as my daily driver work truck. :-)

Kinda pushing the definition of expedition vehicle, since it is very heavy and 2WD, but it does have a locking rear differential (from a Mack) and 42" tires! There is also a winch in the works.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=313730&d=1183745723

The primary limitation off-road is the weight and the limited crawl ability with the Allison 4sp and 3.7 gears. Should have held out for an Allison 5sp, whch has about a 10:1 first gear.

I looked into a 4wd chassis, but they are very hard to find with a DT466, and expensive, heavy, loud and too tall and long. It's primarily a tow rig, anyway.

This is a former Coke truck, and cost all of $5500. I had the camper already. The axle cost $1500. AC $1600. New rear tires $1200. Raw steel to build the subframe, etc., almost $2k.

Still need dual batteries and an air compressor that can handle tires. Keep the 35 inch spare in the bed but will eventually mount it out back. Softer coils are on order.

On the TW200:

It's the wife's bike, actually, but I ride it a lot, about as much as my TTR250. It's a lot of fun in the woods, but could use a little more power (a TW250 would be perfect). Oddly, it's not that great in the sand, probably because I have the tire pressure too high. This is because there are NO rimlocks. Some day I will fabricate rimlocks for it and try it out at 6 pounds. Or maybe use Tireballs like the quad guys.

Thanks for the rig comment.

*8 inch superlift coils (too stiff), skyjacker leaves (perfect when loaded)

Still need dual batteries and an air compressor that can handle tires. Keep the 35 inch spare in the bed but will eventually mount it out back. Softer coils are on order.

i've seen setups like yours, but yours is definitely the cleanest and best executed, the amout of storage you have is great....what kind of MPG you get with it????

I paid almost $1k extra for my ttr on the used market because it had a plate.

And speaking of the pull pal, how do you like it? Does it work well?Thx for not laughing at her. I violate the "never go alone" rule far too often, so the Pullpal is great insurance, even though I've only used it for testing so far. Lots of trails have no winching points, so it's a much easier solution than burying a spare tire. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vd3OAKbgPr0

Thanks !

The girls (12 & 14) have their own little tent (the blue one pictured). It's a Quechua 3 seconds, which unfolds itself in 3 seconds and is stored again in 30 seconds and fits right under the headliner of the Terrano when packed. The dog has to sleep in the back of the truck since he discovered how open the tent at night:smokin:
I'm planning to build a matching offroad trailer for the equipment and as base for a second roof tent for the girls.

The pop-up campers are great though, so much lighter than a normal truck camper, lower COG, and WAY less wind resistance.

I actually have an '06 CTD quad cab 4x4 also, with a popup on it. It's been a good truck to tow the my other rig with, the Toyota. With diesel being about $5.00 and the wife and trying to have a kid, It's all going away. Sold the pop up on the dodge, the dodge should be leaving this weekend and the toyota is for sale. Figure I'll run this chevy, buy an ATV and then build our JK. I should come out about 700-800 ahead every month and still have all the toys.

Here's mine, when I first started building it, I wasn't quite sure what it was really going to be, but I know that I wanted a solid drivetrain, room for the wife and kids, streetable and plenty of cargo room. The planned usage was for mild trails and camping over long distances, little that I knew at the time there was something called an expedition rig...

It still needs some more additions, namely some kind of shelter along with some communication devices and dedicated tool / food storage locations, the giant toolbox holds alot but it isn't very user friendly, also need some more lighting and with the powertrain, some additional fuel storage capacity, 38 gallons goes fast. I'm also thinking that I got it a bit to high, ideally it could stand to be a few inches lower.

Cheers mate. Not sure if you guys have them over in the US but we call them swags. They are made out of 12-14oz canvas and completely weather/waterproof (I've been in mine on the ground in -2.9 degrees and also in torrential downpours of rain and was dry and warm). Basically it has a matress inside (70mm very comfortable) your pillow and bedding and you just roll it out when your ready to sleep and roll it up when your ready to go and throw it up on the roof rack. Fantastic bit of gear and very popular here in Australia (my dads been using his for over 30 years!)

These images will give you guys some idea - when its hot you can zip open the canvas and it has a fine insect screen so you can sleep under the stars.

http://www.mrswagman.com.au/images/36-l.jpg

http://www.mrswagman.com.au/images/38-l.jpg

I've only recently added the camp stretcher to put the swag on - kinda nice when the ground is a bit uneven or rocky and you can't be bothered finding a good spot to roll it out.

My junk

Nice rig, what are the pieces / parts that you used for the air cleaner / carb bonnet, intake setup? Very tidy looking.

I'd love to know/see more about your shifter setup and especially the boots.

Thanks for the props on my 60. The ARB didn't work so well with the 350 crate. The plenums can be had at Summit Racing. Mine is an older GM performance part (Dealer may still have these). I used an airbox off of a Jeep Unlimited. Plumbing reducer from ACE Hardnware. 3 inch Automotive air hose from Kragen.

It's a 285hp crate 350 with a few bolt ons. Turbo 400 auto to reduction half of an NP203 to adapter plate to Toy split case. Drivelines angles are awesome with this set up. It will sustain 80mph on the highway and gear down so low you'll fall asleep.

The triple shifter boots are from JB Custom Fab in Oregon. They are a supporting vendor here.

The rig is still in progress. Just added 120 wall dom sliders and a few other goodies. Troy

Absolutely great to see the vast range of Rigs and the massive size and weight of some set ups. Could spend many hours recoverying some if they became bogged. I like fast extractions So stick with my Suzuki...http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj277/zukildoo/DSCF3534.jpg. Cheers

It's all preference and intent. A larger truck could walk through stuff that would swallow your Suzuki and the Suzuki can go a lot of places a larger truck can't fit.

My Jeep friends are always surpised at how much stuff I can carry in the Amigo. Same wheelbase and track as a CJ7, I just don't have to carry all of the extra Jeep parts :flipoff2: With 2 people, we can camp for a week. With an extra 5 gallons of gas, I have a 350+ mile off highway range.
