: Expo Forum: Introduce yourself here
RustyNailJustin 04-14-2008, 10:03 PM Hello all,
I wanted to start this thread to introduce myself, and hope you all will introduce yourselves. Some of you may know me from here or on the trail. I spend most of my time in the Land Cruiser forum. I have been very into Land Cruisers and wheeling for about 16 years. While I am mostly into “hardcore” rock crawling, I am and always have been into exploring and expedition type rigs. I am currently building a stretched cab 1963 FJ45 with a 3.4 Tacoma motor and Taco 5 speed. This vehicle is being built exclusively for my girlfriend and me to explore the most remote stretches of the Baja and the western USA.
Last winter I went to Australia with a couple good buddies and bought a 1984 FJ60 that we traveled the east coast with. The Cruiser is being stored in New Castle Au. And will be used for future trips to the west coast and the interior including the most trying trek in Australia, the Canning Stock route.
On the more Rock crawling side of things. I have a FJ40 Land Cruiser buggy that has been all over the west, from the Hammers, to The North West, to Colorado and everywhere in between, hitting the hardest trails in the nation. While most folks that go on wheeling trips stay in Camp grounds, or motels. My idea of a wheeling trip is to load the buggy with a Coffee pot, camp stove and a sleeping bag, hit some tough trails and camp in the middle of nowhere. I have been all over western Colorado, Utah, California, and Oregon during all 4 seasons living out of the back of a buggy.
Well that’s a little bit about me. If you have any thought or ideas on the direction of this forum please let me know. I think this is a great idea for a forum and look forward to seeing your trips and projects posted up.
Todd W 04-14-2008, 10:57 PM Todd here :) Hang out in Shop / Tools mostly but also most other forums mainly jeep and gen4x4.
Currently working on my buggy build, hope to have it done in 1 month. It will be for fun/local competitions but main purpose will be an "expedition" type rig for long camp-outs in the snow and Rubicon type trails.
It's not your standard buggy as it will have a shower, heater, ample storage, MANY spare parts, 10g of spare fuel on top of the 13g tank. 6g or 10g of water although most places we go have lakes or rivers to filter. The rig will also have a 100% welded/sealed roof, interior, and removable windshield, and lambo-doors for those winter runs
65SWB45 04-14-2008, 11:40 PM Mark A. here. Die-hard old-school LAND cruiser. Drive to the trail, wheel as hard as I need to TO GET TO MY DESTINATION without looking for 'trouble', and drive it home again. Enjoy the challenges of driving and wheeling old school rigs.
As I get older, I get more pleasure out of seeing how much I can substitute all the fancy upgrades of my earlier rigs for driving skills to achieve the same destination results.
I have a 1976 K-5 which I built into an expedition rig.
I have a 1968 FJ40 which which I built into an expedition rig.
I have a 1964 FJ45 pickup which I built into an expedition rig.
I have a 1984 FJ60, which I am currently contemplating building into an expedition rig.
I have a sickness. Thank you for understanding.:)
OlympicYJ 04-15-2008, 12:00 AM I'm Wes and I use my jeep to go snow wheeling and explore new hunting, fishing, and camping areas. Plans in the near future are 33s a Rubicon Express 4 inch SUA, rock sliders, ford 8.8 rear with hopefully an OX locker. Sometime in the distant future It will be treated to a 350SBC.

cruiseroutfit 04-15-2008, 11:23 AM My name is Kurt Williams, I'm married to my sweetheart Candace. We live in Sandy, Utah where I run an internet based Toyota Land Cruiser specialty shop (CruiserOutfitters.com) and Candace is a sales rep for a home decor company, her region being the state of Utah. We have a dog, Jada (german shepherd), no kids as of yet. We share alot of hobbies, scuba diving, camping, she likes to shop, I like to work on my rigs. I've got a 72' Toyota FJ40 and an 04' Toyota Tacoma... my wife also has a 66' FJ45 pickup truck we are building into her "yard work truck". I just picked up a rust-free 87' FJ60, I'm deciding if it is the rig for me to keep. I've got a 4BT Cummins Turbo-diesel that I trying to find a home for, this 60 is clean but I'm not 100% sure its the rig I want to keep? Other than that I like to read, research history (specifically Utah based), shoot guns and hike.
I'm a little different in regards to my travel wants and needs... while I've had some amazing times on trails outside of Utah, I really have no desire to seek out more, with the exception of the San Jaun Mtns in CO where I plan to return again this fall. I love seeing more and more of Utah, with each trip I find 10 more places I want to visit. The last couple of years have been "epic" years in regards to my wheeling, I've averaged ~50 days on the trail for each, with at least one 3-5 day trip each month. I've documented most of my trips here: http://www.cruiseroutfitters.com/gallery.html though many of the shorter or single day trips don't get posted.
I'm working on a couple of "side" projects based on Utah, one being a "one-stop" planning website, dedicated 100% to overland type trips in the state of Utah, with trail databases, maps, trip reports, etc. Its growing slowly as some of the charter members help add content. In addition I'm working on a book of the American Fork Canyon area (specifically the turn of the century mining operations and trails that resulted), I spend alot of Saturdays at the state historical society archives, digging through maps, letters, postcards, etc... all in seach of content for my book. A good freind has stepped in to help me bring it to fruition, we are hoping to have a very crude 1st draft complete by June 1st of this year. After that project, another good freind and I are planning to work on a San Rafael Swell trail guide. We've collectivley bagged 30+ trips into the area, the idea would be put together a book to help folks plan their own trip. Not sure how it will come together as of yet.

MajorPayne 04-15-2008, 12:07 PM Very cool guys....
Well my name is Jordan. By trade im a race car builder/fabricator. I have always been into outdoors activities (fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, etc) since I was a kid, and when I turned 16 and my first vehicle was a bronco, I got into 4wheeling. Then back in high school I bought my first scout. I finally bought my own house about a year and a half ago (which just so happened to have a shop behind it...perks of being single when you buy your house :P ) So now I figure Ill put my knowledge of fabrication to use with my love of the outdoors and my love of scouts and build an expedition rig.
Its just in its infancy right now...but I think it has a good solid foundation for being an expedition rig...Its a traveler which has a longer wheelbase and will have better road manners, it has a diesel engine that gets pretty good MPG and is reliable, it has a 33 gallon fuel tank, and lots of storage room, solid components and room for upgrades. So I cant wait to get it to the point where I can bring it on a cross country trip, but Im looking forward to it....Im sure you guys saw my thread but in case you didnt here it is:

miniyota 04-15-2008, 12:18 PM ross hildebrandt
started my own business mostly because i love fabricating stuff. i really don't have any extreme trails around here so i wanted to buy something comfortable, V8, leather, roomy, and something i could run on challenging stuff. enter my jeep commander. i noticed no one was making parts for the commander. so i decided to start building bumpers for the commander and other protection. so far its going well.
here is what i started with

here it is now. i've put 20K on it since october. we drive it everywhere and love it.

MilspecXJ 04-15-2008, 11:31 PM Hi Guys, John B here. Originally built this XJ years ago and ran the rocks with it, havent had the urge to do so since i realized i'm more into traveling the backcountry and seeing the sights out west.
Heres a few pics of the XJ as it's being transformed into an Expedition type rig, still lots more to do.... but i'm making progress.
Cool to see this forum addition at Pirate.

I have a 47 CJ2A, I plan to make it capable of expedition, and need to get an M416 for it which I plan to have the roof top tent and all on top of.
RustyNailJustin 04-17-2008, 08:18 PM Hoping some of the Australians and South Americans would chime in. There are some pretty amazing rigs down in those parts!
MossMan 04-21-2008, 06:02 PM Sweet new addition. Now I have a reason to come out of chit chat and the outdoor forums. I started wheelin a long time ago and took the natural progression into rock crawling but since I sold my YJ on one tons and bought the JK I find myself more inticed by the long distance expedition type wheeling. Not that I've done any huge big trips yet but that's what I want now. I'm building the JK to be capable for that and I'm thinking about a bike too. Been looking at dual sports and specifically the V-stroms.
I've been spending most of my time over at expedition portal and advriders lately so it's cool to see this new section here.
Here's the Jeep as it sits now.

The only real expo type mods are the 2m radio, navigation, and of course the extra two doors I added for more cargo space. :flipoff2:
RustyNailJustin 04-21-2008, 07:49 PM Moss Man,
JK’s seem like they would be a great trekking vehicle. Very capable, lots of room, but small enough to be maneuverable, and being so new reliable. As far as newer long range vehicles those have to be one of the best.
broncdawg 04-21-2008, 08:10 PM Expedition Rigs, cool new thread idea. Picked up an 83 E 350 quadravan conversion with a 460, C6, front Dana 60 and a 208 tc. Going to set it up to pit/ chase desert racers in Baja and explore the rest once the race is over.
Needs lotta work, but would like to have it ready for the B1000 in Nov.
Will put up some pics when I get some.
MatLax 04-21-2008, 10:27 PM My name's Mathieu, I live in Quebec, Canada (so yeah, I'm french), here's my rig:

1996 Lada Niva, on the picture it's stock and stuck (my tires were pretty much slick at the time :D)
It's small but I don't need much space to feel comfy, I'm used to backpacking with minimum gear... Right now I have many plans, this summer I'll probably change the rear drums for disks, lift it by two inches, change the tires for 32'' or 33'' (and change the gears in the differentials at the same time, going from 3.9 to 4.3 or 4.1 depending on what I can get my hands on) and I'll probably add a basic rollcage (Jeep style) to which I'll be able to bolt a roofrack if I want to... I'll probably be starting soon, right now I have to worry about school, but on the first of may I'll have my baby back to play with :)

Colorado Ron 04-22-2008, 10:23 AM Ron here from Colorado! Been in the Vehicle Dependant travel for some time now. Been building a suburban for my travels since I have a wife and 6 kids.
Anyway, you can check out my site in my sig, dedicated to Expedition Travel. Im a little behind on some updates to the suburban, but its coming along nicely. Heres the latest from Baja:

bigsub 04-22-2008, 11:29 AM Josh here. Its awesome pbb finally got this forum. Its a different way of thinking then crawling and baja. I think everyone would be surprised if we really new how easily and quickly the US could turn sour. If and when it does, theres no doubt what mentality will prevail. Until then, this kind of stuff isn't like putting bananas in your disaster kit. Its like buying a 50cal that you now get to take out everyonce in a while(unless your in cali) for unimaginable adventure. Just moved to the front range in Colorado and it'd be great to meet some like-minded people.
crawler#976 04-22-2008, 02:31 PM Wow! Nice to see the new forum!
Haven't even logged on in a while - sold the trail beater and have gone back to my roots as a exploratory/historical site wheeler. Still like the rough stuff, but I'm done with the crawlin'.
Current rig is a '98 TRD Taco, on 32" MT/R's, 2.5" extended D'hoes and Deavers, Camburg upper A-Arms, AZRain skid, Stubbs Sliders, I built a rear bumper from 2" x 6" x 0.25 wall square stock, TJM front w/ a Warm M8000. For nav I'm using a Lowrance 3500 C (precursor to the Baja series), and have a Yaesu FT-7800 mounted for comms. Give me a shout - the call is KE7IXX, and I monitor IRLP node #3182, W7JLC.

jeffy 04-22-2008, 02:42 PM I've always been intrigued by some of the vehicles you see in Europe. I used to really like the Camel Trophy trucks. A built up Defender D110 with some skinny tall tires and the roof rack full of gear was always a cool sight, to me. Same goes for a TLC or Mitsubishi. You don't really see this in the US though.
It's very different mentality then what you normally see here (ie., rockcrawling). I'm still a bit torn between continuing my focus towards rocks and camping or do it milder and more well rounded. Maybe go back to 33x10.5R15 or 255.85R16's instead of my 35x12.5R15's and keep it narrower. Keeping my D44 and Detroit though. I wish I could do a old diesel swap from a Toyota or a Mitsubishi but I've got to deal with Emissions. I'd still gear it ultra low though. Choices, choices... :shaking:
Currently have a 2M but I know I should get a HF rig.
Ron nice burb.
Jeff from CA.

There are some great places to explore in your home area. Sourounding Prescott, Jerome, ect is pretty historical and fun to check out.
AlSwope 04-22-2008, 07:15 PM Hey all, glad you guys got this going... I'm anxious to see what kind of camping/vehicle tech you come up with:) I've never done an expedition, but I do ~20 overnighters and longweeks a year. I have a 90YJ. See you on the trails.

No doubt about that! I've been exploring the area since 1976, and still find new things to see and do. My current focus has been on the 35th Parallel expeditions done in the 1800's by Lt. Sitgreaves (1851), Lt. Whipple (1854), and the Beale Road (1857). http://www.southwestexplorations.com/ has some great info on those routes.

Great way to get a lot of exploring done with minimal junk you take with.

Corey 04-30-2008, 03:40 PM Hello, my name is Corey, and I am the admin over at YotaTech.
I have owned several Toyota rigs, and my latest one is an '07 FJ Cruiser I bought back in July of '06 to replace a very tired '91 4Runner that I had for years.
I am fixing up my FJ primarily as an expedition-exploration vehicle, and it is also my daily driver to get me back and forth to work.
I do 4wheel it, but I am getting back into camping again, as I use to be very heavily into that when my two sons were much younger.
So I am building up the FJ to be able to camp and explore with.
Here are a few pictures of it.

It may not be one of those big RV type Expedition rigs, but it's comfortable for a week in Baja, and I can sleep in a tent, or at a hotel :grinpimp:
In March I just did my second trip to Baja, 5 rigs went from Ensenada to Mike's Ranch to San Felipe, and back. I want to continue to go deeper into Baja every time I go, as my rig and my buddies become more and more dependable, and I continue to figure out this whole long range trip thing.

mrbishi 06-26-2008, 07:16 AM G'day all - Jon here from Perth, Western Australia.
I own a 99 Mitsubishi Challenger (Montero Sport in the US). Have got it kitted out for expedition work and have explored pretty much the entire of Western Australia from the Kimberly, to the interior and far south. My Challenger is a one of a kind in Australia (most modified) and has been featured in a few mags over here.
I absolutely love camping and exploring and if its just me and the boys I pack the swag, but if the missus is coming along then in goes the canvas tent. Though now she is sold on the idea of a double swag so its all good! :D
Gotta organise a custom tube front bar, rear swing out carrier and a rear locker. Cheers!

Hey mate - it was custom made by a local canvas shop here who specialise in making canvas stuff for caravans, trailers and 4wds. Still got a few small modifications to get done to it to make it perfect but overall I'm happy with it. I've found its a lot heavier duty than the ARB/Opensky awnings you can get (and that I originally owned before selling to a friend). You can't see in the pictures but there are heavy duty zips that run along the outer edges so I can attach extra canvas to make a HUGE awning or have a semi-enclosed room.

Haven't done it yet but it is on my list. I've pretty much driven the entire of Western Australia from the far north Kimberly, to the cool southern forrests and the inland outback areas :D

I was in country last year but in NSW, and Queensland. I have always wanted to do the CSR. When I come to WA maybe you could show me around a bit? That would be awesome! I bought a Land Cruiser while I was there and still store it in New Castle. I would just fly to Sydney, pick it up and driver the great ocean road to WA! Man I cant wait to get back to your country:grinpimp:
big_perm 07-24-2008, 02:48 PM i just signed up yesterday, and i must say there are some sweet rigs on this site. giving me lots of ideas.
I hope to purchase, and outfit a vehicle to be my dd, shuttle truck, light duty wheeling, and stealth camp in it during the winter months at ski resort parking lots:D and summer surfing journeys
Some vehicles ive been looking at are the 04 or 08 Xterra, Fj cruiser, taco, frontier, maybe a jeep, and for some reason a 90's mitsu delica 4x4 desiel van, or just biting the bullet and going after one of those desiel 4x4 sportsmobiles.

Josh here from Nirvana.. Well, I have visited pirate a few times & thought I would finally sign up & post some stuff here from time to time.
So I have been a Jeeper @ heart since I was a little she-yot.. Here is one for a few chuckles with dad's old overland.

Well, many Jeeps & years later... I am not as cool as most, but I have built a CJ-5, CJ-7, & this TJ.. Done my best to put it together for my needs & wants. So far the last 4.5yrs it has not let me down & the upgrades have allowed me to get through the trail.
Here it is in semi-stocker life.

Been lurking in the Toy/4runner areas for a spell. I won't attach my pos here cause its still dod in the garage. Once it is resurrected it'll be a capable DD with decent offroad capabilities. Mostly Toy stuff. Nothing too racy though.
Thanks for starting this thread.

Nosaj 10-20-2008, 09:37 AM Hello all just checkin in here.
I have no money like everyone else it seems just have a stock 95 4runner as the family expedition rig. We use it for grocery gettin and camping and rock climbing. Seriously looking into an 88 suburban right now as the new means of accomodation for us as our family gets larger.
I used to have a very capable rig for expo'n but it went the way of the dodo when I got married and have 2 kids but since if one of us go all of us go we need more room for us and a huge dog.
AndrewMuadDib 11-02-2008, 08:00 AM I'm building up my rig right after christmas (TJ) - 4.5L stroked I-6 with Avenger SC (tuning it myself), NV4500, STAK mini 3 sp, PSC steering, huge single core aluminum radiator, full cage (will pull it out in 6 months and build one down to the frame), full width hi 9's, longfields, 37" KM2's with Staun internal bedalocks and rock rings to keep from shearing off valve stems, will be running RK 5.5 LA, and in 6 months time will switch to coilovers and extend the wheelbase about 5 inches. OBA, welder, mastercraft rubicon seats, HMMWV taillights, CJ tailgate, and oddly enough a great sound system courtesy of half assed theives who destroyed the old cheap setup and allowed insurance to step it up.
In short, she's ugly, but entirely capable. I'll post pics when I get her built. I'm in Iraq right now - been there for 3.5 years - haven't decided where I'll work next.
Justice R 11-03-2008, 12:37 PM Hi
Justice from So Cal. I've been wheeling Montero's in one form or another since 93 here's a couple shots. My 95 is set up for long range. Working on a little more agressive build on my 89 Short Wheelbase model thats a work in progress.

johncj 11-10-2008, 01:37 PM hey guys. i'm 17 turning 18, and i'm planing on buying my next project here in a couple months and will be posting up build threads as well. this will also be my daily driver as well. but i'm going to a dealership and getting a used suv/truck. and was curoius what in ur guys opinion are are good all around 4x4?i'm leaning towards a tacoma, so i can use it for work as well.
some questions
1.) should i go with IFS or a solid axel?
2.)are 33's good enough or are 35 the perfect blend for multiple terrian?
3.)with regearing or mods, what engines are best to work with, 4 cyclenders, striahgt 6 or v6 or v8 ir diesels?
just trying to get a good fondation to work with. i wont be beating this to hell like a rockcrawler or mudd booger, of course things will/could break. but just want a general opinions of favoriet rigs and setups. thanks!!! i'm a mechanic so for trade of services i guess if u got any questions for diognestis or troubel shooting or anyhting let me know!

b1gsleep 11-30-2008, 02:52 PM Hi,
I'm a new member here and am interested in making my Explorer a little more capable. Thanks for the great forums!
BAGDADEXPRESS 12-10-2008, 05:07 AM Here is what I have and where I want to go;
1999 K2500 4x4 Suburban “MPV” not SUV.
NP246 Auto Trac t-case, the auto feature monitors the 3 speed sensors “front and rear drive shaft speeds along with vehicle speed” then the ABS sensors through a controller that applies 9 clutches at various torque levels to front differential.
4L80e built w/Kevlar, premium steels, transgo off road towing kit, tons of HD aftermarket internals finished off w/B&M super cooler w/fan and160 deg stat control.
6.5 ltr turbo diesel w/enhanced “509” block w/19.5 cr, smaller piston oilers for cooling under boost (enhanced are MAY 99 and newer), dual idler gear drive, dual alternators 105 amp, vacuum pump delete, Heath performance MaxiTq program, mechanical boost control, marine injectors, turbo after-cooler, 120psi water injection tripped w/Hobbs valve, AMSOIL bypass filtration +3 qts more oil, factory oil cooler w/cold bypass and running 2 cycle oil in fuel to lube IP (low sulfur fuel kills em w/o 2 cycle), 6.5 ltr NA diesel lift pump running @ higher pressure, 3” turbo back exhaust (this burb came new w/o cat), EGT’s are limited to 1k @ wot, 2 stand alone IP drivers w/coolers 1 at lower edge of frt/bumper 1 at leading edge of d/s frt wheel well, the injection pump (IP) driver is a known problem which throws no codes. PTO high idle switch (3 range 1k, 1.3k, or 1.6k+-) for better cooling and winch performance. I use OBD2 enhanced scanner tool w/device controllers and real time data monitoring of entire drive train. This 6.5 has given me lots of trouble free use, prior trouble free GM diesel was my 6.2 in a 1986 GM Jimmy K20 4x4.
14 bolt FF 10.5” w/gov loc “ARB for this soon”, magtec cover at rear, up front is the 9.25” w/ARB air provided by ARB to include tire inflation option.
ALCOA 16x7 8 lug 3750 lb cap wheels, tires 285/75/16 (e) 3750 lb cap Silent Armor or MTR’s (d) wheels are etched primed and painted w/Teflon flat black paint.
Front bumper is WARN classic w/brush guard and diesel scoop to enhance cooling trough radiator, a 12k Mile Marker hydraulic winch is mounted driven via HD PSC ps pump through hydroboost then cooled. Bumper mounted Hella DynaView cornering/driving lights (discontinued) but control module can be had to control 2 sets of lights 1 set for cornering (aimed into corner) the other for driving/fog or off road.
Rear bumper is a KENNASAW w/HD shackles. Decided against rear bumper mounted options after reviewing GM up fitting manuals (get em on line) weight distribution frt to rear with accessories mounted in frt of frt axle, then frt to rear weight distributation w/accessories mounted after rear axle, I found that after the front bumper and all the things mounted to it changed the vehicles handling I went to the heavy rear bumper to bring the vehicle back to user friendly manners.
Suspension is stock MOOG problem solver parts and actually the same as the K3500+ because of diesel option (heavy motor).
Electrical upgrades include dual alts 105 amp, more ground straps, stand alone headlight harness and inverter.
Towing is class IV w/2 separate 30 amp harnesses from power distribution block in engine bay both 5 wire/8 wire sockets.
Future mods; 25 gal aux fuel tank under chassis mount = 68 gals in tanks, have 6 jerry cans now, Basket roof carrier or perhaps off road trailer w/hi lift mount, 6 to 12 jerry can fuel/water mount, pioneering tools, LED spots, roof tent or 2, awnings, 2.7k/4k surge diesel genset , Bushwacker cut out fender flares to use 35” tires w/o lift (perhaps 37’s w/o lift and some more trimming) of course deeper gears for bigger tires, Portable mechanical tire changer w/bead breaker, On board welder, Composting toilet , Fording kit w/custom snorkel to go past the now 36” depth I can do now, plan to use the crankcase depression valve CDV like the mil hummer to slightly pressurize diffs, t-case, trans, ps pump to keep water out, interior insulation already removed under rugs plan bed liner for interior floor and more drain plugs too.
msontag03 01-03-2009, 09:41 AM Hey all, Mike from Phoenix AZ.
Below are a few pics of the '62 Willys CJ6 and trailer that I built. I mostly enjoyed bringing the CJ back to life from 40 years as a US Border Patrol 4cyl basket case. This included essentials such as PS, PB, V8, upgraded axles/TC/tranny, dual batt., etc.
The CJ has all the essentials to get me in and out of the back country. When done with the basics (nobody is ever done with a CJ), I put my mind to completing this M101 trailer, which I finished this past summer. Included are a few pics on a northern AZ elk hunt, worked out great.
Great to meet you all.

MissTaco 01-20-2009, 09:50 AM Hi Folks :smokin: Name is Jill and I'm in the process of getting ideas for my 99 Limited 4Runner. (It's wrecked right now... damn ex-husband.)
So far my plans are: Portal-Tek axles with CTIS, big tires (probably the new BFG KM2's... mmmm), adding a gun rack inside, an extra seat for all the darn kids we've got, a snorkel, custom bumpers and roof rack. With the cool tent of course. And I want that neato sport hood with the scoop, but I'm having a bit of difficulty finding one. It should be a pretty wicked rig, I think :grinpimp:
Anyhow, I'm open to new ideas or better ones if anyone wants to give input. This is going to be a long project, methinks.

skitime 02-07-2009, 10:00 AM Hi, just checking in. I have a 97 Geo Tracker with lots of suspension and drivetrain mods. We spend a month each summer doing offroading in the western states. We have only been doing day trips but this summer we want to do some multi-day trips. So I have been reading this fourm to learn as much as I can to gear up for those trips. It has been a challenge to gear up and keep as compact as possible. I have added extra fuel & water containers, 12 volt Waeco fridge, cooking equipment, roof top storage, sleeping bags, tent in addition to all the tools and equipment I always carry. Thanks for all the advice I have read and I am looking forward to learning more here. Here is a link to some pics of my rig. If anyone is running some trails in Utah or Colorado this June I would love to hear from you. Maybe we can run them together.

ToyotaJeep 05-20-2009, 06:13 AM Rob here. I have been building Jeeps and Yota's etc. for about 20 years or so now. Building vehicles has been part of my curriculum for a long time.
Lately I have noticed my interest in car traveling and "expedition" type of stuff is increasing pretty regularly. Watching the Long Way Around didn't help! I know they were on bikes, but that was the coolest movie. Wow.
I am looking at building something that I can explore 2-tracks with and still drive to work once in awhile. I live where we get alot of snow so I need something that is able off-road with some clearance.
Eventually I would like to travel to Moab, up to Alaska etc.
Our first long drive will likely be this summer in my wifes Jeep GC. We are looking at going to Moab etc. but won't likely do anything scary since we need to get home.
I will post my build ideas here in a bit.
Thank you, ROB
RustyNailJustin 05-20-2009, 08:15 AM Good to see you here Rob. If you need directions, trail advice, ect in Moab let me know I grewup right near there and know the land well.
ToyotaJeep 05-20-2009, 10:13 PM OK. I am more worried about finding local trails to ride. I have been out in my Jeep alot lately. I just did an after work ride out across the marsh.
I'd like to find something with a bit of teeth right around Klamath Falls.
Any ideas?
ROB
Ive been searching on a few different 4x4 (mainly jeep) forums but have recently found myself browsing this one for the past few months. Its nice to see all the 4x4's come together on one awesome site.. so with that said, I figured i'd join in on the fun.
I started a cherokee camper project awhile back and been taking pictures as I progressed. I had to stop for awhile, but just recently started back into the project in hopes to finish it. So within the next few days, I will be posting a thread up of the camper and see what you folks think. The reason I am choosing this board is because of all the real life experiences and vast areas of expedition many of the Pirate4x4 members have conquered over the years. I hope to gain as much knowledge as possible from the guru's of adventure.
thanks.
dave
range_time 10-12-2009, 09:50 PM Stated bulding a TJ two years ago after my love of motorcycles left me with a spine broken in 3 places and more rivits and plates that a rusty CJ.. it turned into more of a dual sport rock crawer and we did the Rubicon this summer.
http://tooofast.smugmug.com/photos/628469626_Vk66j-L.jpg
So with that finished and parked i plan on taking this XJ that i got 3 weeks ago down the Sea of Cortez in mexico next year and i can build what i thought he TJ would be .. a real trail rig..

http://tooofast.smugmug.com/photos/655903677_WJsRU-L.jpg
It needs lots of work but i just got it ruining and better yet stopping, which was much harder than getting it running so now i can start on my build. I'll be looking for all kind of help and ideas as this is my first build of this kind.
This is what it looks like with the lights fixed, rack on. extra lights on top, brakes!!! and seats welded to the old frames and some old TJ flairs bolted on. Its going to be a budge build but have it where it counts i hope.

I look forward to picking your brains for ideas and lots of advice on what not to do.
Thanks

wesfab 11-14-2009, 09:43 AM Hello all,
I just stumbled across this forum, and i have to say the idea of an expo- rig is awesome. Ive been into offroading for many years, and have been into camping ever since i was a little kid. Combining the two just seems RIGHT.
Ive gone through all 30pages of the "lets see your..." thread. There are some great rigs in there, however a few of them just appear to be daily drivers. Im still unclear whats involved in a good expo-rig. My take on an expo- is that it would have to be able to haul passengers comfortably, be able to haul equip., and be fully capable off-road.
Im happy i came across this forum, and thanks for having me.
Sabre 07 11-28-2009, 11:26 AM I am in Alabama. I bought a '94 Amigo (Oddball) about 18 months ago and have been using it as a learning platform for stuff I should have known years ago. I am about to enter the world of welding. My plan is to have a short wheel based vehicle that I can camp out of and eventually adding a trailer, too.
I got all of my expo-camping experience from the Army NG utilizing M60 tanks, M113 APC's and finally M1026 HMMV's. My other off-road experience is from the saddle of an XR200 and LPC's.
I am stoked about this section of the Pirate board, I spend time on Planet Isuzoo, Expedition Portal and Lightfighter. I have received good info from all of them.
A little race action from NOV08.

Tayenfabrication 01-10-2010, 09:31 AM Hello All! WOW GREAT THREAD! I am currently building a 1994 Ford Bronco for just such occasions! I live in WV and am looking to find others into this kind of fun!!!
Kredence 03-10-2010, 08:59 PM New to Pirate. I've been hanging around the 4Runner forum for a bit but my honest goal is to turn my 2nd Gen Runner into an Expedition vehicle. I'm looking at joining SARA (Southern Arizona Rescue Association) and need to build a capable rig.
At the moment...I know nothing and have come to read and learn.
I have an extensive background in modification of vehicles and do professional/factory style work. My last build was a fully built '92 Acura Integra. I spent 2 years building an engine, dressing the engine bay and rebuilding the interior. The vehicle was stupid fast, super clean and appeared to have been built from the factory that way (sleeper with the hood down..minus wheels).
I hope to learn as much as I can about what gear works and what doesn't. I don't want to buy and install a full setup...only to be upgrading 6 months later.
Thanks for being here and the warm welcome!
Jon_Alex 03-26-2010, 10:42 PM New to Pirate4x4. Really like the expedition forum. I have an '04 Rubicon TJ and would like to make it into a kind of "short expedition" vehicle as I live here in northern California where I don't usually go that far at one time... not more than a week anyway.
Hi I live in BC Canada and have been camping and exploring for many years. I have always used a VW Westfalia, but due to a growing family I'm going to build a bigger more capable off road unit. My new camper is going to be based off a 2001 GMC 2500HD and a Bigfoot fiberglass truck camper.

bdbecker 04-28-2010, 10:56 AM Hello everyone! My name is Brad and I currently reside in the southeast corner of South Dakota. I'm completely new to trucks and off roading, but found this forum through my other passion - motorcycles. I found Punkskalar's thread about building his Yamaha XS650 and started poking around and liked what I saw - especially the DIY threads and mentality that seems to be the norm here. A lot of the other truck and off road forums I've seen are "where can I buy" or "I had this place install this part on my ride" type threads.
My ride is a no frills 2003 F150 XL, regular cab, long box, and 4.6L V8. I originally thought about making it into an off roader, but soon discovered that I didn't really have the right starting point to build what I wanted without some major $$$ and modification. No worries though, my buddy pointed me in a new direction - adventure/expedition travel. The more I read about it, the more I like it. I've always been an outdoorsman, spending more nights in a tent during the summers growing up on an Iowa farm than in my own bed. Motorcycling is still an important part of my life, but I'm kind of getting to that point where I've done pretty much all there is to do on a bike, and want to try something new. Besides, I'm also the proud owner of a 4 month old Newfie/Lab mix puppy and always feel bad when I leave her home when I go riding.
Anyways, back on the topic at hand, I do understand that my F150 might not be the ideal long term starting point, but I'm new to the sport and figure working with what I have to get my feet wet is better than doing nothing at all. The only things I've done to the truck at this point is got the 4WD working again, and upgraded the wheels and tires. Future plans involve upgrading the suspension (probably just shocks for now), getting a cap so I can have a dry place to sleep and store my gear, putting bed liner on the rockers to prevent rust and scratches, and fabbing up some real bumpers for rescue/winch situations.
Here's how she sits today, modifications to come as time and money allow!

blackcoffee 05-12-2010, 12:32 AM Introducing myself, live in Southwest Florida and have owned this 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe 2 door 4X4 for about 2 and a half years and started building it into what I see as an expedition vehicle. My funds are limited and at the moment I"m putting in a Monster Transmissions SS mega monster 4L65E and I'm running a Lokar floor shifter to go along with it. When I bought the truck it was a stock LT 4X4 with no modifications. The list of mods is long so I'll just start posting pics. I'm working on a rear bumper with a tire mount, cb antenna mount, jerry can holders, d rings. I plan to do a 4" rough country lift, I have a 14 bolt SF 9.5" that'll be going in soon aswell. The engine is a remaned 5.7L vortec with less then 20K miles on it. Just about every part on the truck has been replaced. Its running 3.73 gears with a G80 locker. The PCM was tuned by Black Bear tuners and the engine runs on 93 Octane. CAI and shorty headers. The interior is also a big work in progress. I'll add to it as much as I can, should be a cool build.

JohnMcD348 06-14-2010, 08:59 PM New guy here. I've kinda been online here a few times over the last couple of years looking at redirects from other websites but I finally decided to register. Not much to say, I'm not a hard core wheeler but I do go off the beaten path occasionally. There's not really any real off road areas around my area so I'm limited for the most part. I've been 4wheeling for maybe nearly 20 years ever since I had my Samurai back in 88. I did alot of off road work when I was in the military but that's another story altogether. Now I own an 08 Dodge Ram Megacab 4x4 Hemi and a 92 Bronco with a 300 I6. I'd like to upgrade the Bronco and turn it into a true go anywhere, do anything rig but keep it conservative at the same time.
Here's a photo of the Kids.

4WheelDriveVan 07-07-2010, 12:17 AM Mike Here, currently living on the East Coast but originally from Michigan. I grew up with stock Jeeps plowing through the deep winter snow and playing on the sand dunes. As I got older I fell in love with places like Moab Utah. After my most recent trip to Utah I decided to start my first hardcore build. Up to this point I've never done much more than a budget boost and 31" Tires.
My current project is turning my old 1997 E250 Van into a capable off road family vacation vehicle.
http://4wheeldrivevan.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/rebuilt-dana-60.jpg
So far I've collected and rebuild a Dana 60 high pinion front, a Sterling 10.5 rear and a NV273 T Case. This weekend I'll be working on bomb proof evil looking front and rear bumpers. Over the next few months I'll be throwing all the parts together and once I have her up and running I'll start to make the interior a bit more luxurious.

Thanks for having me and I'm looking forward to both learning and sharing what I know with anyone willing to listen.
Scout198575 08-16-2010, 10:25 PM New guy from Pennsylvania. Been lurking for a while and finally decided to register. I got into 4x4s when I was young with the purchase of a 1946 Willys CJ-2A. I quickly grew too tall and fat so I sold it and got a Scout.
I am currently working on a 1975 International Scout II

Inferno 08 12-11-2010, 12:12 PM Hey all, I'm new here and love the idea of an expedition rig. My current daily driver is a 4x4 diesel '88 Suburban, which I'll be building for this purpose. Hopefully I'll learn a lot here.
ctdwaggy 01-26-2011, 11:02 AM hello,
my name is Keith. I'm from South Texas and I am working on a 1984 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. I drove it for years with the 360 but the gas mileage was horrible so I am currently installing a Cummins 4BT/700R4/241C setup.
I have it running and when I get the bugs worked out I have plans for a 4" lift, roof tent, and some drawers or other gear for the inside.

CJSCustoms 04-06-2011, 07:52 AM Hi all, Clint here in California Bay Area. A little over a year and a half ago I bought myself an ’86 4Runner. It’s been a slow go do to tight budget and it is my daily driver. I have learned a lot here so far so thank you to all you guys posting up your info. and input.
expeditioner 05-21-2011, 04:23 PM Hello everyone! My name is Ian, I'm 17 years old and live in Thousand Oaks, CA. I've been an offroad guy all my life but am recently becoming more of an expedition-oriented person. I own a 1984 land cruiser BJ60 that currently has a blown head gasket and needs a turbo rebuild. Don't get me wrong I love the truck, but with school and work I don't have enough time or money to devote into getting it reliable. But I must say it has really turned me on to expedition vehicles. I recently bought a 1988 GMC suburban that will be my project. I'll be making a build thread for it in this forum, so check that out for more info. For now, here's a pic of the 'burb.
(all those oil spots are from the LC, the 'burb doesn't leak a drop :))
Nice to meet you all!

Panther 06-30-2011, 09:50 AM Hey all, Mike from Phoenix AZ.

IainU1250 08-27-2011, 09:17 PM Hi all, Iain from Brisbane, Australia here.
I'm currently build a Unimog U1250 into an expedition truck for a "round the world" trip.
Here is a few photos of the truck "before" and more recent ones showing progress to date.

The last on is a mock up of the interior - I'm getting a boat builder to do the proper fit-out - carpentry and cabinet making is not one of my strong points.

I have a more detailed build thread is on the Unimog forum on Benzworld.http://www.benzworld.org/forums/unimog/1459829-my-camper-project.html
I also own a Land Rover Defender 100 - set up for the general short 2-3 week trips.

I'm currently building the roof rack for the Unimog, and came across the very useful article on Bending 101.

plym49 01-30-2012, 02:54 PM Hi All - Been lurking for a few years and once in a while I might contribute something. This Expedition Vehicle forum is pretty neat. Many impressive vehicles that you all have built. My DDs include a Jeep YJ, Chevy 4x4 and a Deuce. I am upgrading the electrical system of my Jeep with military components - waterproof connectors and components are good - might even convert it to 24v. Personally, I don't mind diving in to any type of project. What could go wrong?
Cee-Jay 01-31-2012, 02:43 PM Hello, Cee-Jay here. I went on a multi-day off-road camping trip this September in Eastern Washington. We camped one night at the confluence of Quilomene Creek and the Columbia River and the next night at West Bar, a large natural sandy beach along the banks of the Columbia opposite of Crescent Bar.
This got me fired up to buy a 4x4 and seek adventure more often; hunting, fishing and camping with friends and family in the wilderness. I've been trolling craigslist since then looking for vehicles and hitting this site and others to explore options.
Growing up, my family had an '85 K5 Blazer with the 305. I had a mid-90's two-door S15 Jimmy for about 10 years and now we have a Mitsubishi Endeavor, which is a great value cross over but that thing would probably break in half on any sort of moderate trail. That will remain our pavment pounder and I'll pick us up a proper off-road rig.
I done a ton of reasearch over the last several months and I've pretty much settled on an 88-91 K5 Blazer/Jimmy or 89-93 Ramcharger. I'm looking to build a family adventure vehicle or light overlander as opposed to a full on Rockcrawler. Think 2.5" lift, 33"s, beefy body projection, roof rack, drawers and storage, some simple strength and recovery upgrades but mostly stock. I've got a long drive to get to my expected off road spots, so comfort and safety on the pavement is important too. I love the Land Cruisers and 4 Runners but they cost more then I'm willing to spend right now.
I grew up in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC but now live in Seattle, WA with my wife and two young boys. I manage a risk management group at
a local energy company and I also run a Life & Leadership Development coaching business on the side. I like getting outside to hike, fish, hunt, barbeque, drive and just plain hang out. I enjoy adventure and I enjoy connecting with people on a deeper level... and I also like to f*ckin' party!
I'll stop now but promise to deliver 300 more pages about myself soon. :p
Thanks,
Cee-Jay
