I've got this John Deere 4045H engine that I'm planing to put in a full size Jeep, I'm having some trouble figuring out what to bolt to the back of it, It's got an SAE3 flywheel housing on it I would like to get a Spicer 3053a transmission But I'm not sure what to do about the flywheel are there any recomendations for custom flywheels?

You might want to try putting this in the Jeep or general 4x4 forums, they might be able to help you out.

John Deere will do a few different flywheels for this engine that you should be able to find at machinery salvage yards.

Its a great engine in the way of reliablity etc, but a not so good power to wieght ratio as the engine wieghs in at nearly 1000lbs and has a max rating of 173hp, sure it can be turned up but its still 1000lbs.

Thanks.

It is heavy but it has over 470 ftlbs I will see I guess.

If im reading this info right its nearly 40 inches tall.Dont get me wrong I like the sound of this swap but 1000 lb and a very tall piece are hard to over come even to a tractor mechanic as myself.Should be pretty efficient on fuel.Good luck.

Sorry got side tracked in my last post.Do you not currently have a flywheel? If you do have then any clutch rebuilder worth 2 cents could help with this.Might have to redrill for p plate bolts.

A 6bt would be a better choice I think....

x2.

I'm assuming that the JD motor isn't going to have an automotive style governor either which may affect the drivability...

Well I'm getting it for almost free so I'm going to use it I've got it apart next to a 6bt and it is way beefier, it also has wet cylinder liners so it can be rebuilt many times, I think that the hp and torque curves are all reprogramable and the governer droop. I found a parts list on the JD website looks like they make like 15 or 20 different flywheels so I'll probably just have to call them and see if they have one that will work. I've got one but it is from some weird application like a rock crusher. They make a side mount turbo manifold that might shorten it a bit, and a different pan. The other main problem is that it runs at 24v.

that looks like it'd be a really cool motor to use. But unless you're custom building a mid-engine buggy you can basically build around the engine, it seems like it'd be tough to shoehorn into anything

SAE #3 is a bitch. There is a company caled Phoenix castings that makes an adapter, try then, otherwise you will need to get something made custom...
