: fixing a wrecked bike
darreng 04-14-2008, 11:02 PM So, I wrecked my 919 and want to fix it. I bent the forks, exhaust and radiator, along with some other random crap. I'm going to have to replace the handle bars as well. My dilemma is I do not have a motorcycle jack, nor any means to stand the bike vertically and work on it with the front end and handlebars short of supporting it from the ceiling. It doesn't have the holes on the swing arm for a race-stand.
How would ya'll support a bike to remove the handle bars and forks / exhaust? Will a motorcycle jack work? Is there some obvious solution I'm not seeing? It'd probably be easiest to do the forks then handle bars, or vice versa?
Any help is appreciated (massively).
Ben Segrest 04-14-2008, 11:58 PM Try putting a jack under the engine. Leave the bike on the side stand and jack it up just enough to pull the tire. It is a bit precarious like that, but it can be done. It also saves the trouble of pulling the exhaust and making shims for a m/c lift. If you want to use race stands, there are rear stands that cradle the swingarm tubes instead of using spools. Maybe someone near you has something you could borrow or make your own. Then there's always the option of just laying the bike on it's side, it's already screwed up.

Wisers 04-16-2008, 01:02 AM Block of wood? Milk crate?
Bones 04-16-2008, 06:56 AM Jacking it up is great if there is no exhaust in the way. I have an ATV/bike jack that worked great on my dirty bikes, but not on my Bandit or faired VFR. At leat they have center stands.
I'd rig up something to use ratchet straps to the ceiling to get it up and should be safer than trying to balance it on a floor jack and some 4x4's
45acp 04-16-2008, 07:45 AM Get a rear stand at least. Ive got T-Rex front and rear stands and for the money you cant beat 'em. $40 for a rear stand, then a board and a jack under the header will get the front up so you can work on it.
darreng 04-16-2008, 10:36 AM Yea, I think a rear-stand will be key. I can then lift the front and not feel freaked-to-shit by it.
Thanks for the info's. Now I just gotta find a good source for Honda parts. Triple clamps are fucking expensive!
Bones 04-16-2008, 10:54 AM Ebay away. You will find parts I bet. I almost bought a 919, nice bikes
Sillyneck 04-18-2008, 07:35 AM hahahah I think you're over complicating it.
-you wrecked it once... pull the bars then lay that fucker on it's side and peel it apart. hell put a blanket down if you're concerned ;)
-2 friends w/ 1 hr and a 12 pack.
-normally I'd throw a big ratchet strap under the kneck and hook it to a rafter, tree, cantilever the bike off your tire and hook it to your roll cage
-kickstand down, jack under the opposing rearset ot slider peg will unload the front.
I dunno... i guess I just do this alot and I've never owned a stand.

And here I was worried about scratching the paint and making it worse. Yea, I tend to over complicate many-a-thing. :D
but first thing I'll do is replace the shredded slider.
dogman 04-19-2008, 07:01 AM Best way in found was to ratchet strap the front up in the air if you have garage or shed engine hoist etc. This is helpful when working with bent fork tubes. When installing new tubes you dont have to worry about tipping bike or knocking off the stand.
Richard 04-19-2008, 10:17 PM x2 on the milk crate , thats how we did it back in my youth , how about some pics of the carnage:D
adampfisters 07-02-2008, 02:22 PM Why don't you just put it next to a washing machine; last time the BIKE went nowhere when you did that :flipoff2:
Sturgell 07-02-2008, 03:27 PM The exhaust is bent, take it off and set the engine on something shit who cares its wrecked anyways. With the exhaust out of the way it should set nicely on a cinder block and some boards or your ex-wife/girlfriends body which should still be in the freezer because you are procrastinating on feeding her to the pigs.
