This is NOT the offical rally thread!

For the Virtual Rally for Upper Tellico, please post HERE: www.pirate4x4.com/landuse

Well, I took it upon myself to sack up and get this off the ground. I spoke with a few people and thanks to Lance, Camo and Kurt we will now be having an online rally to help save the Tellico OHV here on PIRATE!!!

The date is set at May 7th from 4-9 PM Eastern Standard Time. That's just 3 weeks away!!!! We need everyone to pull together like we did for the Hammers. I have already started posting this on numerous other boards and I'd ask you do the same. Let everyone know that they need to come out and show their support.

Go ahead and start looking through those old pics of your rig at Tellico and start thinking about those stories you've had. We need them all and we need you to post them at the Rally on May 7th. In the days to come we will be sending out press releases and getting the media's attention. I will also be giving everyone more information about the area and what's going on.

Please stay tuned and start spreading the word. I'll be putting a link in my sig line on all the boards I frequent. Also, if you have any questions post up.

Thanks in advance to everyone

edit: I spoke with a buddy of mine and he said that he wasn't 100% sure what he needed to do. This is the step by step procedure:

1) Sit at computer on May 7th between 4-9 PM Eastern Time
2) Go to the Tellico OHV Rally thread (it will be a dedicated thread solely for the Rally and nothing else)
3) Post a picture and/or a story about your good times at Tellico
4) Wrote why you think Tellico should remain open and give positive comments
5) Sit back and enjoy other stories and pics as they come in
6) That's it!

Thanks for taking the initiative and putting this together.

Post up the press release when it's done so we can all pass it along to our local media.

Everybody else, post this link to your favorite wheeling board or your local club BB to spread the word..

It will take a few days for the press release.

Once that is out we NEED as many people as possible to spread the word. I do not know many of the east coast boards, so we really need you guys out there to spread the word, not just online, but in 4x4 shops, on the trail, at functions etc....

Not a dumb question at all. You do what most of us do everyday. Just visit here on May 7th between 4-9 Eastern Standard Time. There will be a thread set up specifically for the Tellico Rally. Click on the thread and post pictures, stories and positive thoughts about the Tellico OHV and why you want to prevent any closure to the area.

It can be as simple as a picture of you and your family in the rig riding on trail 4 with a short "My family loves Tellico and we want our children to have the opportunity to ride in the future. Please keep Tellico open."

That's all it takes.

another thing you can do....that I BEG you to do:

Is get the word out to as many people as possible. E-mail all your friends, post on bulletin boards, talk to people...

Once we get the press release done it will be easier becuase you will have something to post, until then, just get the word out.

STRESS to people that the time has come for the ENTIRE OHV community to all come together to fight for our trails. Most people ONLY fight for thier backyards. We cannot do that anymore. Comments from people who have NEVER been to Tellico (me included) weigh just as much as a regular on those trails.

Im not quite sure exactly what you are after, but here goes anyhow.

I started going to Tellico in the mid 90s although I had know about it as early as back around 75 or 76 when I first began driving. I knew people who were 4 wheeling at Tellico back then, but I never had a rig back then so I didnt go. I have been there many times, and have done the annual cleanups and the SFWDA workdays several times over the years, and have noticed how each time there were more 4X4 folks and fewer trout folks volunteering. Also, the trash on the trails has diminished tremendously.

I have seen the hard work put into Tellico by the SFWDA guys, especially Gunnar Byrd and his construction company.

I believe that closing or restricting the Tellico OHV area is an effort thats going to backfire on those who want it to happen. The people who go to Tellico to wheel are gonna wheel somewhere, and I think we are going to have some serious land conflicts as a result of closure of the OHV area.

Its my National Forest, too, and I should have a say in how its used. The National Forests are not supposed to be a wilderness, they are supposed to be an agricultural asset to be used by the Nation. That why the USFS is under the Dept of Agriculture, instead of the Dept of Interior like the Park Service. The USFS website states "The Forest Service manages public lands in national forests ..." Note that it said PUBLIC LANDS, not private, limited access, restricted to certain groups etc.

Its my national forest, too.

You are more than welcome Nick.

Is there a site that accepts funds?
I'd like to do something as a private party beyond what TT's can provide.

Used to be the saying that "as CA goes, so does the rest" for quite some time we have been fighting the same battles in different locations.
I think it's time to make a dent, a big one.

For the most part I am an FSJ specific vendor, although I love to dabble.

I encourage all vendors to step up and support the cause.
At my age I'll probably never see Tellico.
I hope your children do and I hope their children do also.

VIRTUAL ONLINE RALLY FOR UPPER TELLICO OHV AREA
Pirate4x4.com builds on a successful rally format to protest more route closures

After an extremely successful virtual rally for Johnson Valley and the world renowned Hammers rock crawling trails in California, Pirate4x4.com members are shifting their focus to the east coast and are once again gathering for a massive virtual rally to save the Upper Tellico OHV Park in North Carolina. On Wednesday May7th, 2008, Pirate4x4.com, a leading website for the OHV community, will hold this rally from 4 to 9 pm eastern standard time.

In 2007, the Southern Environmental Law Center, in coalition with Trout Unlimited and P.E.E.R. (Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility) filed a notice of intent to sue the Untied Stated Forest Service, claiming it was in violation of the federal water pollution act. This coalition stated that the Upper Tellico OHV area was dumping sediment into nearby streams and destroying the habitat of local brook trout. In turn, the USFS closed a major portion of the Tellico trail system.

There are many arguments against closing this popular OHV area, and many organizations involved in keeping it open. Carla Boucher, the attorney for the United Four Wheel Drive Association states, “United Four Wheel Drive Associations (UFWDA), along with its partners Blue Ribbon Coalition and Southern Four Wheel Drive Association, are committed to taking all steps necessary to save our access at Tellico, including legislative, administrative, and legal action!” This rally will bolster the efforts made by these organizations in this battle by showing a large contingent of OHV users who back and support these organizations in their efforts.

Virtual rally participants will be asked to post their experiences, photos and history recreating with their families in the Tellico area along with their feelings and beliefs as to why the trail system should not be closed. Their comments will be posted and tracked in a bulletin board format, with a goal of creating a lasting record of how important this area is to a vast number of people in the OHV community. Tellico is one of the very few public areas on the east coast for OHV recreation. Interested parties are encouraged to participate in the rally and read the thread.

On March 12th 2008, Pirate4x4.com hosted a similar virtual rally for the world renowned OHV trail system in Johnson Valley, CA. That rally had nearly 1,500 posts from OHV enthusiasts all across the world in a four hour time span. Saved in time in order to create a lasting homage to the rally, to date the Hammers rally has been viewed by over 48,000 people.

The online rally thread may be found at the top of this forum: www.pirate4x4.com/landuse

I need a Tellico Local that posted in the JV rally to PLEASE help us out. It make take a little time, but I think it would be well worth the effort.

You go go thru the JV rally thread and PM everyone who posted there?

Thank them for taking the time to post in the JV rally, and ask them politely to attend our Tellico rally. In a nice way try to mention that we ALL need to come together as a nation-wide voice....that's why you posted for JV and you would like THEM to do the same for Tellico.

Any takers for that job?

Updated the press release....

It only had my e-mail on it, not Nick's. He is the one running the show here.

Nick if you want a different e-mail addy on it, please let me know.

I will have to ask Roxy to open the rally thread today for a minute so I can fix that one...

After sending out 200 or so press releases.....I googled "tellico rally" "rally for tellico" etc. etc. (in qoutes so it would search for those words together)

Well, I got BAD NEWS, I did not get much back. I found a few posts on other bulletin boards but other than that....not much talk on this rally. If this is going to be sucessful, we need to make it viral on the interent and make sure it spreads...

We NEED people to get to posting and spreading the word!

Aww man! not Tellico. I have never been and have heard nothing but people talking about it. I would have posted in the save the hammers thread even though I'm not anywhere near there, but the end of the time was an hour before I got off work. I guess it's a good thing this one's until 9. So what ever happened to the hammers? Did that thread help?

Guys/gals we do not have much time left. Kurt is right and we need to make this rally viral. Start slinging this press release everywhere. I'm going to hit all the local newspapers today as well as the independent press. Don't let the momentum die down. We need everyone's help.

"Nick,

Thanks a bunch. We will definitely get this in the paper, although it will
have to be in next week's edition. That will still give folks a full week's
notice of the on-line rally though.

In the future, use my email for anything Tellico related at the paper. I am

We STILL need help in getting the word out!!

I posted this on your local board Nick:

Hey guys,

Kurt from Pirate4x4.com here.

I am the land-use editor for Pirate. I am VERY involved with keeping out trails open, not only do I belong to almost every pro-access organization you can think of, I started the “Friends of Eldorado National Forest” out here in CA.

Before I begin, you need to know that Nick is working his ASS off to insure that this rally is successful. He is doing an awesome job. If you see him on the trail hand him a beer and thank him. This is HIS gig and we need to support him in anyway possible.

I am posting here because I have read several posts that ask what this rally can do for Tellico and I thought I should explain.

When we first heard that the USMC is proposing to take over part of Johnson Valley where the Hammer trail system is located, we felt powerless. In order to not just sit on our asses, we deiced to do something, so I organized a virtual, online rally for the Hammers.

In just four hours, with the server timing out constantly, we had nearly 1500 posts in that thread. To date, over 48,000 people have viewed it.

Before the rally, I sent out almost 150 press releases. After the rally I sent out ANOTHER press release with the outcome. It turned A LOT of heads. The Marine Corps had NO idea that the Hammers were that important to so many people. They issued a press release because of the rally, the USMC guy in charge is now having meetings with one of our local organizations AND one of their newspapers reported on the rally.

The rally got media attention in many local rags, including one big one: the San Diego Tribune.

It also forced a local representative to hold a public meeting to address the issue, which was packed with people because of the rally. (the meeting was actually already planned, but JV was not in the agenda until the rally happened.)

What’s more, is that the rally bolsters the efforts by our organizations. Now they can show and prove to people at the bargaining table how important that area is to the OHV community.

Sorry, I know this is getting long, but another key point:

In the past, people have only fought for their own backyards. (meaning they only fight for their own trails.) That minimizes the impact they have and their voice. It weakens out battle for our trails. We cannot to that any more. We ALL have to come together to fight for each others trails as one. That’s what the Sierra Club etc. does. We need to tell people that.

I have never wheeled in JV, and I started that rally. I will never wheel in Tellico, and I will be SURE to post. If we all support each other and come together as one, we will have a better chance of saving our sport.

My worry is this: This rally has not gone “viral” on the internet yet. The JV rally was organized in a week and news got out quick because people kept forwarding and posting the press releases. (google “rally for the hammers” in quotes and compare it to “rally for Tellico” you will see a big difference)

We NEED your help in spreading the word if this is going to be successful! PLEASE e-mail out the press release to as many people, companies, and organizations as possible. Post on bulletin boards, send bulletins thru Myspace etc. (there is an event on Myspace that I posted up)

Nick is doing an awesome job, but he cannot do it alone. We need to get the word out, PLEASE, all I am asking is for 10-15 minutes of your time to spread the word…..

See you on May 7th,

KURT

Well, in my surfings this morning I just came across this. You guys might want to take a look. If this shit doesn't scare you even just a little you might want to rethink your perspective.

http://www.cs.unca.edu/nfsnc/nepa/tusquitee/tellico.htm

especially:

"Final Trail Condition Assessment"

We need more than what people are doing right now. I have the feeling that there are a handful of people really digging in on this and others that are saying they'll show on May 7th. That's good and much appreciated but we need more than that right now. We have ~2 weeks. Time to make a stand.

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee46/orangecherokee/Tellico%20Rally/Tellico.jpg

I guess by Dixie Run we'll know if we have a place to ride anymore. Take note of that timeline!!!

Wayne is all the way out in Washington and that's just about as far as one person can get to Tellico yet he wanted to help regardless and has offered up some sweet stuff that we all need.

Up for donation was 2 - 806 Spicer joints or 2-kingpin rebuild kits from Yukon. If the winner doesn't have a need for either of those, Wayne went a step further and offered up a $100 gift certificate. When you get the chance stop by and say thanks for supporting the Upper Tellico OHV.

Wayne flat out rocks. Great guy to deal with and buy from. I know, bad place for a plug, but I had to say it.

If you really dig into those .pdfs, they have a ton of information. For example, their findings showed that over half of the drainage dips are not functioning. Seems like you could make the argument that the trails are suffering from these poorly maintained water diversion structures. Repairing those could be a much more desirable alternative to total closure.

Other interesting data:

"The greatest number of sites delivering sediment to streams is occurring on Trails 3, 4, & 8"

"Three bridges were found deficient and needing repair/replacement."

The turbidity graph HERE (http://www.cs.unca.edu/nfsnc/nepa/tusquitee/tellico_turbidity.pdf) is frightening since that was the weekend the trails opened back up.. Although that measurement seems abnormally high given its drastic variance from the other data points in the series and given the reading from later in the day. Like something stirred up a bunch of soil in the water right upstream of the measurement device.

I would encourage everybody to browse through that page that McCracken linked..

Alright everyone this is it. The final push needs to be strong. We have just over a week left and it's now or never. My main focus this week is to secure the last sponsor and work on posting on every site known to man. I know this site hates double posting but I need to check with Lance to make sure it will be ok to post this in every section of this board as well.

Press releases need to be sent this week as well. I will be posting up a list of local newspapers in the area that need attention. Some press releases may have been sent to them but there needs to be more. A lot more.

If each person will set themselves a personal goal I think this whole iidea will be a success. By personal goal I mean something along the lines of "I will hit 20 websites this week and post up about the rally", or "I will send 30 press releases to businesses and media before Friday". Now onto my Patton speach in front of the US flag...

I think what's partly wrong with America is that we've forgotten how to stand together on issues. Too many times do you have groups that don't see eye to eye and therefore become mortal enemies. This is the case with Trout Unlimited. If they had come to the round table, sat down, drank a beer and discussed how we could work together we wouldn't be in this situation. We've tried on numerous occassions to come to a middle ground but they don't want it. Forget the fact that we are one the major providors of money to that forest system. Forget that we have put in countless man hours in volunteer work. Forget the fact that we've been doing this for 25+ years!! It comes down to who wants it more.

It's no longer about the difference between Jeeps or Toyotas, Ford or Chevys, Scouts and Samurais. It doesn't matter if you hit Peckerwood and Schoolbus or you stay on Trail 4 and ride out 6. What matters is that you love Tellico and you love the fact that you know it'll be there when you want to go wheel some of the best trails on the East Coast. This entire decision by the Forest Service will affect every spot you wheel in the United States and beyond. If we let a private group shut down a federal land then what's to stop then from shutting down any private park?

The Clean Water Act is powerful and has the ability to close a lot of places for us if we are not mindful. As we have stated before, we will do our best to work with the Forest Service to maintain our trails and protect these waters but if they don't know we're all out there then it's all for nothing. Please take this week to step up and show everyone that we are out there in numbers they cannot ignore. Please post in every forum and chat room you visit about this effort. Take the press releases and flyers and pass them around as well.

Lastly, don't forget to thank our sponsors for this rally and all the people that have pledged their support.

Lance gave the green light on double posting land use issues a while back, go for it man. People need to know what's happening.

I thought about this today.. maybe you can suggest that people go ahead and write what they are going to say now and work on it until the day of the rally, save it in notepad then copy and paste it into the rally thread. That way they have plenty of time to collect their thoughts and express their concerns of Tellico.

Keep up the good work Nick and Kurt!

I would say not to post in the other forums until the 5th or so...

That way we can peak interest at a key time. Intial word is out on THIS board, (and others) but reminders are good....we just do not want to remind people TOO early.

Good one Kurt. I actually thought the same thing the other night before I went to bed. I'm glad you posted because by morning I forgot and you just now reminded me. We definitely need to get those guys in on it.

BTW, great news! I was flipping through one of the local papers today and guess what I saw. Damn straight! We're in it :bounce: So one paper picked up on it. I haven't had a chance to check the others but this shows that we need to keep slingin' those releases.

After I fill out a stormwater permit for one of our facilities. I'm going to start posting wed addys. I'm stoked!

This is info I dug up from a paper I wrote a couple of years ago as part of a research project.

"Around the turn of the century, the openly partisan journalism fell out. Journalism schools were established and reporters learned to report objectively. At the same time, economics forced many newspapers into consolidating within the industry. This left only a handful of cities with more than one paper. Now most reporters were professionals with a degree in journalism, liberalism become the way of the land for reporters. Along this time, certain facts damaging to the Democrats that were available, could no longer be found. This caused the notions about truth and what was right in society that was the same as liberal political thinking became the norm in every newsroom. Thus, in the end, this had the effect of making the newspaper media an arm of the Democratic Party. This new restriction of information caused the Democrats to enjoy a long era of success."

We know how the Democrats like the environment!

I will find my notes I used to write the above, and provide the links for anyone that wants to check them out.

So, getting the reporter that wrote the earlier comments to changer her view, is like trying to get a leapord to change it's spots. Not going to happen.

Todd

Land use issues... we have to deal with this everyday! With raising gas prices and the economy being bad why take away our only escape. Here it is JV(The Hammers) WHY!!! :mad3:thats my thing. We need these trails! to enjoy.
I hope to see the powers to be read these posts and realize its not right to take away areas the we all enjoy.
Yes Tellico is far away by distance by close to my heart as a wheeler!
This weekend we are vointeering our time and working on the Jeep Miller Trail here in California since the Forrest Service doesnt have the funds to open the trail.
Why cant we do the same, Work together to keep our trails open?
