Should have a 35 spline D60 rear end 5 on 5 1/2" ..... I checked the pirate bible & it said so.. just double checking....

thats why I'm wondering...

Bible says:
D60
Used in 1969-1983 Jeep J20 trucks

Ring gear diameter = 9.75"

Available ratios = 3.73, 4.10, 4.88 (1969-1973); 3.73, 4.10 (1974-1983)

Axle shaft diameter: 1969-1973 (medium truck) = 1 1/2"x35 spline semi-floating (5 on 5 1/2" lug pattern); 1969-1973 (heavy truck) and 1974-1983 = 1 5/16"x30 spline full-floating (8 on 6 1/2" lug pattern)

A Powr-Lok limited slip differential was offered till 1973; from 1974 and later a Trac-Lok limited slip differential was offered.

I don't think there is a '72 J-20

I'm pretty sure '72 had J-2000 (1/2 ton) and J-4000 (3/4 ton)
'74 is when J-10 and J-20 started.

When I was in the boneyard the other day I saw a '71 J-4000 that had a 5 on 5.5 Dana 60 rear, semi floater, I think it was 4:10 if I remember correctly. But as far as I know, they did full floaters also.

yes.. from '69-'73 they offered an HD upgrade to the 1/2 ton trucks... which had the d60-2 in them.. semi floating, 35 spline, 1.5" shafts... hence forth the 5 on 5.5 lug pattern.. since it was in a 1/2 ton truck..

one draw back with this axle is that the diff is offset to the passenger side... they did this to occomadate the different tranny/transfer case options.. the trucks were long enough to get away with it..

i have this axle in my jeep now.. and i cut 3" off of the long side so it would match my front d44... and its still about 1.5" offset to the passenger side.. but with a 22" rear drive shaft.. i dont have any problems with it.. the 3/4 tons had the normal d60 full floaters in them..

now.. some early to mid 60's fords had this D60-2 axle in them.. i have found them in the work trucks/delivery things.. and this axle is about 63" wide.. with a center diff.. and just so happened the one i found had a detroit in it also.. looked stock.. but they are even more rare than the jeep version..
