To be, Expedition/Camper Rig but it broke on its Maden US run 6 miles out.

Premodified.. with larger tires for better Hwy use, turbo diesel engine, Tranny upgrade, 12v coversion, extra fuel tanks, etc.

Went back to NY.. they did not finish it by the time I got there. They were buttoning it up, buttttttt that took all day. I helped feverishly as well to get it road worthy by Sat. Well. to attemp to that is. Finally by `1am.. with help of Clark Welding (John Schwarz) I sorta had it road worthy.. enough (we thought) to get me home.

Well... about 100 miles into the journey home it started haveing some bogging issues on hills... prior to that there was little of that. I stopped and rested her.. and checked fluids.. added a little oil. to tranny and engine. Then took off again... but the bogging got little worse.. hour later. I stopped to get fuel.. needed very little. buttttt... I lost all electric power to the ignition switch and dash etc. Infact I seemed to loose all juice from the battery out except one heavy line into the dash. I assume this was for Volt meter and or Amp meter. yes.. though Im not sure looking back now, Amp meters were working. After much wire tracing and short hunting.. decision was to install back feed power lines, one from the line described above and one straight from the battery into two different areas to make sure their was ample power for both lights and fuel pump. New friend had jumped in to help by this time... He saw the Mog.. and as a mechanic who loves to tinker. he jumped right in. AWsome knowledge in this gentalman, and he was going EXACTLY to the same city I was. GOD WAS WITH ME. WE got it going and headed up the road with him following me. Goal was to drive on to OH

The bogging got worse.. so now its parked at a truck stop.. Tom drove us on in his jeep to OH. He dropped me at my home.. which was litteraly minutes from the hotel he had reservations at.

Right now, It is Fri. evening a week later... Ill be back out to the Mog Sat. around 6pm to start plumbing in a 5 gal gas can to replace all fuel tanks to eliminate the possibility of junk in the tank restricting the tank pick up tube. I'll toy with it thru sun. when I'll have to drive home for work on Monday. I have no more free weekends for at least a month so ifffffff it does not seem like it will have the power to trek home by Sunday I'm leaving it at a shop I contacted in adv. to work on it. It's an Auto elec. shop. A local machine/offroad shop suggested him. The owner has 16 years in Diesel and 20+ years in auto elec. On the phone he sounded very knowlegeble.. and not too enthousiastic about tackleing this mess. Due to his enthousiasm (lack of) Im confident he wasnt trying to impress me over the phone with his knowledge so I think I can trust what his knowledge base sounded like.

This information leaves out some of the drama of the day... Saga Saga Saga...

The saga still continues. There is a Mercedes dealer 45 min away... then next one... issssss 4 hours away if as I'm heading due west... hmmm what to do... hmmmmm

OK.. I got there on Saturday evening. Not early enough to do much but investigate and hypothoisise. My Plan on this trip was to run fuel line into a plastic fuel tank; bypassing the normal fuel tanks to eliminate the possiblity of junk in the main tank plugging the fuel pick up tube. If this ran AWSOME.. then I would return the following Sunday with a friend (harder than u think) and drive the puppy home.

After getting there I decided I didnt need a fuel can to run out of. I had enough hose to actaully put the fuel line into the tank via the filler tube. The hose reached about 3/4 way into the tank.

On sunday I did the fuel line in the filler tube trick and the rig ran much better. I moved it back to the normal set up and again it ran like shiat. soooo... I put hose back in filler tube with a generic fuel filter on the end of the line and covered the tank filler tube with a piece of rubber using zip ties.

Several folk stopped by including employees of the truck stop to take a gander at the machine. All were intrigued. The employeed set me up with a friend to follow me to the shop where I would be leaving it so I did not have to hike the 10miles back to my jeep. I was GRATEFULL.

I drove it to the shop.. it ran well but still with the abscence of power like was there before.

I headed home just after that .... got home that evening.

Now.... the saga continues at a Shop In Mill Hall PA

Steve Ayres of would u beleave of "Steve Ayrs. auto electric"....is diligantly working away on the Mog. Their was catastrophic failure of main power feed lines in the wiring harness. Apparently nothing to do with the cab being removed during the clutch repair. He also found a bad relay for the Glow Plugs. This is consistent with recent things I have read in MB mail list about MB's with this vintage motor.

He suspects the fuel problems are related to air getting sucked into the system. Im begging to wonder if I inherrited such problems from the previouse owner (PO). I found a set of flared fittings for the fuel distribition system for the 4 tanks. It was in the rear box in a cabenet. Maybe what's on it now was one of the RR's done by the PO to chase down air leaks.

well this is what was found.

Electric Fuel pump went south.. it started sucking air into the system. That was replaced

Main powerfeed line inside the wiring harness went south somewhere. Replaced.

Glow Plug Relay went south... Replaced wiht domestic parts

Several little things rewired cause it was a hodge podge.

A valve is sticking.. ear of the old diesel mechanic can hear it but he has not investigated further. I will do that once I get her home.

Cost of repairs... lets just say I got... A big screen TV for sale, A 4:1 out of my TJ (no case 1/2) Im dropping my cable TV and modem service, ahhh.. so on and so on.

Sooo.. She is ready to pick up. But I could not find a ride out there to it. (it's four hours from my home) Have discoverd that their is a Greyhound station 25 minutes away from it so Ill prob. end up doing that. Steve; shop owner, will be gone for Labor Day weekend soooo there it sits till the weekend after laborday.
