We are planning another clean-up in Choke Cherry Canyon, for Saturday June 14th starting at 8-ish am and lasting until noon. We are currently working with the local BLM (Bill Papich) and they are providing gloves, shovels, rakes, buckets, dumpsters, and everything necessary except trucks and people. The area is amazing for wheeling, but is unfortunately destroyed by trash dumping and misuse.
The BLM was impressed with the way last years' event was handled and with the effort that was put into cleaning up before last years' TTORA Takeover and have REQUESTED the assistance of TTORA and other 'wheelers in the area to help maintain and PRESERVE the area for recreation.
Anyone who can attend and offer a hand is strongly encouraged to.

This is an opportunity to get active in preserving our right to 'wheel and to show that we do take care of the land we use for the sport we love so much, so make some time and help support our efforts to keep trails open!!!!!

After we are done taking care of business everyone is free to hit the trails of their choice. Most of us that are attending will be there from Fri June 13th to Sun June 15th.

Please come out and join us and help support a great OHV are, as well as our sport!

If you need directions, or have any questions please ask here or feel free to PM me.

Description:
Chokecherry canyon is a very unique place in that buggies, very modified,
slightly modified, and stock trucks can run the same trail and everyone
will have fun; optional lines is what makes chokecherry amazing. Don’t
want to do an obstacle? Go around. Can’t make an obstacle? Try another
30 feet over. This area really is a huge playground for any type of
vehicle.
The cleanup is going to be Saturday, but if people wanted to come out
early, to get the most out of the wheeling trip, by all means come out
early and we can show you around. Last year’s cleanup lasted about 4-5
hours, which left a lot of time to go wheeling afterwards. Sunday you can
go wheeling as well if you feel so inclined.

Meeting time will be 8:00am-noonish Saturday Morning at the staging area
(directions below). We will be splitting up in groups to hit different
areas that need to be cleaned up, which will be announced at staging on Sat morning.. After the cleanup, we will all gather
around and decide what trails to run and what trails everyone wants to do.

Staging will be located at the entrance to chokecherry canyon, which is at
the intersection of pinion hills and glade rd. (a large dumpster will be
there).

Map of staging location:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=36.771411,-108.209796&ie=UTF8&ll=36.772236,-108.209796&spn=0.015916,0.029011&t=p&z=15

Direction to Camp:
From Pinion Hills Rd.
Turn off on CR1980 aka Glade Rd (chokecherry canyon)
There has never been a sign or anything to mark it whatsoever. But there
are land marks.
* It's a canyon bottom at the base of a pretty big hill.
* it's on the right (north) and paved
* It immediately curves to right and becomes gravel/dirt
* there are street lights if it's dark.
* there is large wash on the right (east)
Stay on the main road. At ~+2miles you'll pass the "Glade run rec
area/BLM" sign
You will then cross over the wash, then cross back after a ways.
2 TOTAL WASH CROSSINGS
After the 2nd crossing you'll come to a fairly large, well used "T"
intersection on the left.
PASS IT!
Take the next trail that peels off to the left. It's just a few yards past
the intersection.
You'll pop out in brown spring. Which is kind of like a parking lot
surrounded by a big slick rock bowl. That's were we'll be camped.
Total distance is ~3 miles from pinon hills

Map of where camp is located:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=17429398579826337653,36.773710,-108.193470%3B13201069828820386689,36.808481,-108.177934&q=36.808481,+-108.177934&ie=UTF8&ll=36.809319,-108.177953&spn=0.015908,0.029011&t=p&z=15&iwloc=addr

If so, I can bring my deuce and a half out to make fewer trips. It will hold a few truck loads of garbage.

Let me know.

Yes, that's the plan! We will all meet at the mouth of the canyon and then split into groups and hit designated areas in need. In most cases the leader of the group will have his/her tow rig with trailer as the main hauling rig (alot of people have buggys or rigs that won't haul alot of trash). That being said if you would like to bring your BIG rig you can, but if it's going to be a hassle don't worry about it. We'll have plenty of tow rigs with trailers.
The trails themselves can be cleaned up as we 'wheel them throughout the weekend :grinpimp: (they are not that bad)..Sat morning we're consentrating on the Canyon itself as well as roads getting to the trails. We have a group that is going to meet with the BLM and go over the trouble areas here in a couple weeks so we know exactly were we need to be.
We have two 40 yard dumpsters to fill so we need all the help we can get here folks!!

We need to talk to Bill at the clean-up to see if we can't get a new sign made letting these low life pieces of shit know that we will no longer tolerate the dumping.
Those pics just goes to show how much participation we are going to need this year. Thanks for posting them, as well as everything you've done to get this clean-up going Kev!!

If I can get out of work on Friday and drive, I'll be there. Visiting family as well also.

Born and raised in Farmington. That makes me sad that the canyon is getting raped like that. It used to be very clean up to about 1998 when all the asshats came out of thier holes and Fucked it all up. No thanks to the comps. and the current club out their "Cliff Hangers" don't give a shit any more. Just a bunch of rich ass self rightous shits that think they are better then anyone else.:mad3:

Im sorry for going off like this. Stepping off my soap box now.

I'd like to participate. I gotta scout that I'd like to try on the trails also, it's not road legal (yet), or exactly safe (no seatbelts or roll protection). Guess I could just show up and help, and avoid the jehovahs witness knocking on my door at the same time. Lokkin foward to it.

yeah...it seems the asshats have really put the hurt on the local washing machine population. Normally their pretty secretive critter and you hardly ever see them in wild, but corner them in some secluded canyon and some ass will drop a dozen clips into them before they can duck down a burrow.
and judging by the carcasses, CRTs are thriving. You'd think with the numbers that they're slaughtering out there they'd be extinct by now but I'd bet good money they're taking down 2-3 a week still!

And as far as I know, the wheeling scene has pretty much died in Farmington from what I hear from my friend who still lives there:confused:

Believe me it was a crazy fun scene back when I was attending SJC and hitten the canyon on Friday and Sat nights by myself to meet up with my group as usual and wheel till sun up! Forget the House Parties which where lame. The real parties where out in the canyon that was on a constant move! It was a riot and I do miss it. Alot of people never understood why I left for the hills late Friday night by my self until one night they went with me because of no house parties that night, and since then, they would claw and bribe a seat to go with me! can we say free beer and gas! It was a hoot!

Thats to bad. Im sure some day or year, it will spike back up

And as far as I know, the wheeling scene has pretty much died in Farmington from what I hear from my friend who still lives there:confused:

I don't know who your friends are, but that is not the case. There's still plenty of RESPONSIBLE 'wheelers that frequent the canyon...There's also a bunch of punk ass kids that party out there that are'nt REAL 'wheelers that trash the place.

Forget the House Parties which where lame. The real parties where out in the canyon

And that's part of the problem... I don't mean to twist your words around, but there's alot of kids that go out there and party that have no respect for the area :mad3: I'm sure this was'nt the case with you and your friends, as you seem to be a responsible 'wheeler..
One night we set-up camp at Brown Springs about 7:00, unloaded the rigs, and hit the trails right away..We came back to camp around one or two in the morning and there had to have been 75 kids that invaded our camp and had a HUGE bonfire going. Big fire, no problem, but it was right in the middle of the road through camp and they were burning pallets with nails, doors with hardware (screws) bottles, and god knows what else. As we pulled up they dispersed very quikly attempting to put the fire out. We did'nt think much of it untill the morning, we just made sure the fire was out, made our own controled cooking fire, had some beers and grub and went to bed.. The next morning we spent about two hours cleaning up the mess they left in what was really OUR CAMP.
Don't get me wrong, it's not all punk kids that contribute to how bad the area has become..There's also the mother fuckers that are to lazy to drive to the dump *the canyon is much closer, we'll just dump our shit here* :mad3::mad3: Don't even get me started on the assholes that went out there with a backhoe and made their own motocross race course (I beleive LEO are still looking for them)
I could go on for days about what we've seen fucksticks do out there, and the many confrentations we've had with them, but you get the idea..

To be completely honest, from my understanding, the wheeling scene is better than it ever has. People from all over the country come there now; whereas, before it was just locals. I could be totally wrong, but I've never seen so many people on so many different boards wanting to go to farmington, or how they are planning their next trip. Its becoming the place to be....

No words can describe how upset I am about this area...

I did my best to haul out my own trash. I did have to tell my pacs to keep the trash in the rig. The group I ran with did the same. We did not leave a trail of trash! But there are some that cannot understand that.

It was a great time and I have so many stories back in the days!

Phill Collard is the Man to meet. He is soo cool and responsible in keeping the trails clean. I enjoyed the nights when He happened to be out there when I was there.

I just wish my junk was ready for the clean up as well make it. But He is torn down for needed improvements

Have fun people! I will be there in spirit

Better yet tell him to come out, help us in our efforts, and hit some trails. Even if he does'nt have a rig ready, we could still use the help, and I'm sure someone would offer a seat :D

...The response for this event is amazing! So much, in fact, that we are moving the camping site to an area just east of Brown's Springs. The camping area is a large, flat grassland area and on the opposite (east) bank of the main dry wash.

The campsite can be reached 3.6 miles from the intersection of Pinon Hills Blvd and Glade Rd. and ~.2 miles past Brown's Springs. Turn right at the 4-way intersection, crossing the wash, and continue the follow the road to the right. You will see several very large red tanks and we will be camped in the large field adjacent to them. These red tanks are highly visible from the main road as well as from Brown Springs...when in doubt, head toward the red tanks, eh?

GPS to get you close... 36°48'37.09"N 108°10'27.43"W

Several folks will be rolling in throughout the day on Friday so spotting folks shouldn't be too bad either. We'll be the biggest group out there for sure!

See you out there!

I just got back from Chokecherry Canyon yesterday. I was up for the ProRock. I met a few of the Cliffhangers and some of the 667 Rockers. You guy's have some amazing wheeling there. I’m envious as hell! I would love to have someplace like Chokecherry Canyon that close to where I live.
Thanks for putting out the effort to keep the area clean, it really show how wheelers come together and clean up after the people that are too lazy to go to the dump and the irresponsible shooters who leave their shot up trash everywhere. We have the same problem here with people dumping their trash. And the shooters trash just about everyplace they go. I own guns and love to go shooting, but WTF???

Anybody know if the media has been contacted or will be there? Seems like a good chance to get some "good" press coverage of us wheelers.

I had the press invited but I never ran into them...which is probably a good thing. Turn out would have to rank somewhere between "disappointing" and "horrible". If it were not for the fellows from XTO energy and BLM folks coming out on their day's off, we wouldn't have had enough people to fill a half a single dumpster let alone the 4 we planned for.
I am hugely thankful for XTO for feeding those of us that did turn out but the fact that 1/2 of the food didn't even get touched makes the $1200 they spent sting a little. I'm sure it will make it that much tighter to find sponsors that will step up next year. Oh well....all we had to plan by was the posters on 2 dozen BBs that said they'd show up. It could have been mobbed with volunteers....

We did good. We did what we could. 3.5 dumpsters filled is an effort to be proud of.

I know I didn't get to meet but a few of the folks that came out... but you all have the most sincere "Thank You!" on behalf of the wheeling degenerates of nmttora!

Thank you

Had a great time as well, but the turn out was very sad. But we picked up the slack and did our best to fill um. Chandler and I will be there next year for sure as we had a great time with our fellow degens...

Yeah, it was great of those guys to step up. It was in their best interest as well as ours. Both of us, meaning wheelers and well companies, get a bad rap as We're the face of the canyon. We're there. We use it. You see our tire tracks everywhere. This was one of a very few opportunities that one can give back and maybe temper some of those bad vibes that come our way that associate the trash with the face, so to speak. I feel bad that we didn't hit the number that we promised but, hell, I can't/won't feel bad for the effort or the turn out we did have. People have reasons they can't come...that's enough. It's not going to make me take what I see as responsibility any differently. ( ...does make it harder to get sponsors though...)

Redtruggy...I EXPECT to see you next year. :D

so...now on a punitive note.

I happened to find some relative identification at a the bottom of a sizable pile of trash at the entrance of "reptile" trail

Trash consisted of"
Clothes,
A&W cans,
Gamer Mags,
General trash,
old electronics with lead acid batteries,
Several large walmart, patio style furniture style boxes filled with said trash...and more.

edit... I don't think he's from NM as the university letter referred to him as "out of state" admissions..

But at the bottom was correspondence from MNSU to:

24 May, 2007
Bryan J. Shaver
840 Sunrise Ct.
Farmington, NM 87401

If someone would like to track down this particular fuckwad and tell him that I've pick up his shit ...and maybe cross post this and make his life living hell...I'd much appreciate it :D

Crosspost as needed...PLEASE!

You have his address. The "responsible" thing to do is to return his "lost articles" to his front yard.
While your at it why not bring him a couple truck loads of shit to go with it.

Can Bill do anything with that info??

While going through pics/vids at lunch, thought I would check into this dipshit. Apparently he is 23 years old. It might be worth a few bucks to get a detailed report on him and his parents....

Well put, I think we did well for what we had to work with (attendance)
I hope by "degenerates" you mean degenerates in general, not "The Degenerates" if you know what I mean.
We would like to work a bit more closely with you guys next year.. Seems as you knew where the trouble spots were outside the canyon as we did.. You guys know the canyon, and surounding area's well. That would help us as far as organization next year.
We're are working on more sponsorships/ possible give-aways next year to try to draw in more people. It's sad when you see a group of Jeeps drive by you (during the clean-up) and don't even ask what's going on, or offer their services for a couple hours, just drive off to go 'wheel. I did'nt see this happen personaly, but there was more than a few people that confirmed this was the case.
Maybe Off-Road sponsors and give-a-ways will draw more attention. Is it sad that we need to lure people into helping? Yes, but I feel it's what we may need to do. Whatever we need to do to gain more interest in helping out the area is what we will do for next year!
Ant thoughts on the subject would be appreciated! Feel free to PM me with your thoughts!!

Thank you once again for all those who helped out. We had people travel from AZ, and even CA to help out! Thanks Guys!!

Hey I recognize that last guy..:D:D:D.

yea, I was sorta disappointed in the turn out and really ashamed to say Farmington is where I am from. Man, the amount of trash was unbelievable out there and I only went to one spot.

Thanks to everyone who showed up and helped out. Thanks to XTO for the grub (ummm BBQ!!).

Let me know when ever there is another clean up, I will be there with the big ol' beast!!
