Sorry for the Newb question but I don't know much about Nissans. I have a buddy that wants to mate a 4cyl diesel from an 81 2wd Nissan to an 80 4wd transmission. Will it work?

Yes, but you need to swap the bellhousing on the tranny. You should be able to do it yourselves.
