Taken from the Expedition thread:
Goal for 2009 is to use the factory half rack mod which uses the lower portion only of the rack at the rear and middle mounting points, and a Storm company kit to mount a crossbar only to the front rack mount like this FJ owner did (http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff86/Bigfish171/Vehicles/FJrack4.jpg).

This will lower the roof top tent down several inches making for a better ride on the highway.

Yea it attaches to both. Here's a little better picture of the top plate. If you look close you can see where it attaches to the truck, just below the bezel.
The lights hold the plate down in the front. They bolt down through the plate and the 3 light tabs.

That might be a problem... I didn't want to raise a stink about it on the Blue Room, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if something breaks with that setup. As you know the body and frame are attached via huge bushings that allow quite a bit of movement...

That's been one of the problems with the All Pro bumper, is a piece that goes from the bumper (frame mounted) to the hood latch (body mounted)... gets all twisted and broken.

Probably depends on how thick/rigid that top sheet is...

I totally agree with where you're coming from. It was something that I talked to the guys at Intense Fab about too. I think that since that top sheet is aluminum (and not too thick) it will bend before it breaks. If it breaks, I'll have to think up something new. But in the mean time, I don't think it will do any harm to the rest of the bumper. Thanks for your input.

I know whachyer thinkin' !

I don't think this design would suffer any of the problems of the All-Pro or other similar bumpers. Those ones have a rigid deck on top that crashes into the bezel and the little corner plates with aggressive wheeling. This one looks like it's held in place with connectors and if anything, it's going to flex there.

It'll be interesting to see what happens since I'm going to build something for Speedy just as soon as I hit the next mental block on the crawler project.

I like this tube work. I've got a lot to learn, and I'm watching EVERYONE I CAN!!! :D

tibaal89
10-21-2008, 07:07 PM
Sounds good, MM... If it isn't too thick and isn't bolted too many times to the body side, it may well just flex around be OK.

Jon, I think you're talking about the 'pop the body panels off' problem with the AP bumper... I don't think that's remotely possible here. I'm talking about the 'mysterious hood latch bracket of wonder and doom' problem. :D

Let me know if you want some SERIOUS tube practice and we'll cut the front off my truck.

I think those problems are one and the same. The bracket basically got shoved upward by the bumper in a way that it was never intended to, because the design tacitly assumed a static relationship between the body and frame... which is just not the case. The latch became a load bearing point and was the weak link in that structural buttress. *snap!*:shaking:

Just a stock FJ that i've been re-building after it got flooded, All-Pro Bumper is on its way, and there are always lots of things on the list but we'll see how long it takes. It actually gets wheeled, if you can't tell from the bumper...

Consider an upgrade. ;)

Yeah a new bumper, is actually on its way. Most of that damage is from when the thing got flooded. Yeah i put it in low and locked the rear diff. and it creeped right up it. It was a little freaky when i got to the peak, but it stayed and i thought it looked cool so i took some pics.

It's got a low range in the Tcase with like 2.7:1 gearing I think... the gearing leaves a lot to be desired, but the overall crawling capability of the truck is incredibly good compared to similar vehicles (SUV, IFS, etc).

If by single speed you meant literally only one speed, that is false...

hmm i thought that somewhere inthe specs i had read they had a single speed transfer case. though that was when they were first being talked about...my bad then

Thanks, it is very comfortable and you can fall asleep in it too.
Only con on it, it is heavy and takes up space.

Got it from Cabelas.
Cabela's Chaise Loungers - Black (http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp;jsessionid=HCTRMZWM1WWLZLAQBBICCOFMCAEFCI WE?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20075-cat20148_TGP&id=0032217516942a&navCount=2&podId=0032217&parentId=cat20148&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=9IS&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20148&hasJS=true&_requestid=15221)
It is available too in other colors. (http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?type=pod&cmCat=MainCatcat20075-cat20087-cat20148&id=0032217)
Mine is the deluxe one, a little bigger than the standard one.

Another chair I took on vacation was the Xpress Lounger Arm Chair (http://www.sierraexpeditions.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1011).
Compacts down to the size of a laptop carrying case.
Very comfortable too.

I'm not sure if you were asking where I am or where the pics were taken, so I'll answer both.

I live in the DFW area; Frisco specifically.

The first picture was taken at the recently reopened offroad park in Bridgeport, TX (west of Decatur)

The second picture was actually taken somewhere in the New Mexico mountains outside of Cloudcroft. It was at last year's FJC event called Thrill on the Hill put on by Desert Sun Motors of Alamogordo, NM.

Whereabouts in TX are you? You should come to the Lone Star Toyota Jamboree (http://lonestartoyotajamboree.com/). Pre-registration is closed, but you can still drive up. There should be close to 200 rigs there!

Don't know how often he'll be on here, but I'll answer you. Those are metaltech.com tube doors. I had a set made by Don @ FC Fab in stockton.

Great looking rigs. I have wondered about the stock mirrors, what is the round thing on the front of them? Is it a light or just the design?

trab
07-21-2010, 08:45 AM
it's a small "clearance" light in the mirror, barely lights up, but it does. Some people have done mods to make them much brighter.

An update on mine.
I had a new BajaRack model MG (MG for Maggiolina tents) put on in April.
This lowered the tent down about 7" or so from height of the stock rack.

The rig handles much better now at freeway speeds, and I picked up about 1/2 MPG.

Hey, what kind of tires are those? How do they do on and off road?

Corey

Hey, what kind of tires are those? How do they do on and off road?
They are very noisy, and they handle fairly well for a mud type tire.
Had them in the snow in the mountains and they did pretty good too.

These are Dick Cepek Mountain Cats.
Very similar to to Toyo and other mud tires.
Pro Comp, Toyo, Dick Cepek, Cooper, most of these are made in the same factory.

These Mountain Cats however are only distributed I believe through Les Schwab Tire Centers, which is where I got them.
These are my second set, I have another set I bought first in the stock size, they are on the factory rims.

Believe it or not, it's still running the factory windshield. We use aquapel on the windshield inside and out and it repels the water and dust pretty well!

I guess it depends on what class you are racing in I know that some do not allow glass. I'm having plexi made for mine for the windshield, rear doors and rear windows.
