first off I don't have a zuk but I thought you guys would be best to ask.
Here is what I have:
88in wheelbase, sprung under w/ ~8in of travel per corner, portal axles locked front and rear, 4 banger with ~70hp and a 70:1 crawl rig weighs right around 3000lbs. alloy body with alloy pick up cab, no cage (I know give me some more time)
My question is how big can I go with tires before it turns into a stink bug. It has some worn out 280-85 r16 goodyears for it but I can get some 16x9.00 (36in) michelins for it cheap.
Likewise at what point are my tires too small, 33s, is it realistic to get though most things on 33s or 34s?

I believe fatkid won Carnage on the Con running 33's.
I wouldnt go over 35's on 88" wb, but that's just me.

Some people think it's all about the tires, However it would be nice to have some meats but you have to be able to pull them.:)
I feel that I'm stuck at 33's until I'm geared lower than 80:1...

I'd be tempted to go spring-over and run 32's - you will have tons of ground clearance with those axles :grinpimp:

It depends a lot on what type of running you do. Iīm at a final drive ratio of 87:1 and sping 35" TSL/SX in the mud with no problem, but lack tire speed in reverse to clean the tread effectively. In my case, a smaller tire would actually be worse.
If you run mud, a 35" somewhat less agressive than a Swamper would prolly work OK with your setup. But if you youīre set on Swampers or Boggers, itīd prolly be better to go a bit smaller...
As for rocks......

With portal axles riding on 33's should give you the clearance of a 36 inch tire. Am I correct??
Stick with the 33's and stay low....
slow and low that is the tempo......

billj,
why do you run super-wide SX's for mud? Seems like all the mudracer guys run skinny Boggers or TSL's...like a 34x9.5.

Three reasons...
1) Most of the mud īround here is bottomless. I use a wide tire and the Zukīs light weight to my advantage, "floating" on the surface. Most of my friends, running Heeps and Toys, just sink to the axles and sit there looking stupid!!...:flipoff2: :D
I wouldnīt have the HP to turn a buried tire, so itīs better to stay on top...
2) When itīs not waist deep mud, then itīs deep ruts, mostly created by thin tractor style tires. My relatively wide stance, combined with the side lugs on the SX tire enables me to "climb" up both outside walls of the ruts, often making the difference between stuck and not-stuck... The only care I have to take is to not go too low with my tire pressures so as not to blow a bead. At least until I get my beadlocks mounted, that is... Iīve already machined the rings, but now Iīve gotta dismount the tires and weld the rings up, all a real PITA...:p
3) The third and most important reason..........
THEY LOOK COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!
