: HELP!! New diff gears

Do new gears moan or hum for a while? I was driving the new gears around, and above about 20 MPH they were humming. When I came off the gas, it stopped. Is this just the new gears "feeling" each other out? Or did I set something up wrong?
They are Toy V6 gears if that matters.

they should not make any sounds if set up right. What was the thickness of the depth shim you used.were these the P/G gears?

Precision gears.
I don't know what the setup was <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0">
I set them up so they had a good backlash feel, the shim set was the same as the stock (based by eye), and the gears meshed in a good design.

The gears had a good feel as well when I spun the yoke. There is no sound below about 15-20 MPH, or when the gas is off. They're not bucking, don't feel like they're binding, I can squack the tires from the line, so I'm not slipping.
I haven't taken them above 30 yet, if I give them a short ride at 40-45, will they grenade, or will I get some more info from the sound?

Oh yeah, PS: These are new everything (I got a full master IK)

Gear whine is usually cuz they are not setup correctly from what all the install manuals say.

did you use the yellow grease that comes with the kit? The gears (as far as i know ) should not make any noise.

sorry to say it, but they are set up wrong. Run with the gears like that and you are going to destroy them. looks liek you get to play in gear oil again.
(just out of couristy, did you use any type of tools to check the back-lash?

Check the backlash w/ a dial indicator. I'm willing to bet the gears ain't et up correctly.

I feel for ya, when i blew the carrier in my dana 35, i had to put in the wrong one as a trail fix and listen to the gears howl for like 3 months... Such a painful sound after hours of freeway driving... Oh well, i swapped that hunk of crap this weekend... No more gear whine!

Did Pazuzu try to setup gears without all of the proper tools? YES
Was he happy with the gear mesh, backlash, and pinion preload? YES
Does he feel he did a pretty damn good job considering he doesn't even have a press? YES

Is he embarassed? YES

Wednesday, I'll tear back into it and try again...
