All,

I was replacing the key tumbler in my non tilt steering column...well to get the lock ring snap-ring removed I could never compress it far enough and no one in town had the lock ring tool....so I unbolt the steering shaft at the stock u-joint for slack to remove the lock ring...my idea works great...the lock ring is removed...now I can't get all the sob back together again...

I put the steering wheel back together and in the meantime, since it is only my two hands, the shaft slides out of the column once or twice...I fish it back throught the hole and put things back together...well now I can't get it all to match back up...its like the steering shaft is about two inches to short now...what gives? Any ideas?

My Scout is stuck until I can get it back together. Also, I have a borgeson joint down on the steering box and I think that maybe I can put the steering wheel together and take someadjustment out down at the borgeson joint....any ideas? I need to get this thing back on the road.

Thanks.

Heheheh, sorry, BTDT. You need to find a way to pull on the internal shaft. The column is designed to collapse in the event of an accident, thus the expanded metal structure of the internal shaft. Reattach the linkage to the box and then find a way to pull on the upper section of the shaft, this should expand the column enough to get the C-clip back in place. You could also bolt the steering wheel back in and hope it expands the column enough to reattach the c-clip after you remove the wheel. GL

Also, don't Scout II's use a GM column? You should order the gm column compressor tool dealio. try harbor freight...

So the steering shaft basically has a slip yoke in it??

Oh yeah...what is BTDT?

Thanks Joe.....looks like a come along to the roll bar might help stretch it out since NO ONE in town has the damned lock ring compressor....gotta love a Scout II...

Thanks

You'll still prop need the snap rig compressor. I thought you where short an inch? The snap rig compressor is a C the puts pressure on the plate so you can seat the c-clip. Use the come-along to tension the column. Then use two deep sockets and a flat bar to press down on the plate. Then use your free hand to push the c-clip home. You could really use a buddies help in this case.
