If anyone is interested in going with the Oregon boys, we are gonna leave SUNDAY, JULY 6th from Southern Oregon at 5 A.M. and we should be at Tahoe by 2P.M. and on the trail by 3.

We are going down the Cadillac side and camping at Rubicon Springs.

Dinner that night is on your own. Good rule of thumb is to bring 150% of what you think you need... Also, bring about a case of water per person... No water = Not a happy camper... None of the water at Rubicon is safe to drink out of the creek as far as I know.

If anyone can bring a bunch of burlap sacks, that would be great for trash.

I know of about 20 samurais that are going.

Depending on Brothertons work schedule, we could camp 2 days to 4 days, but you anyone else can be there as long as you want.

If I remember right, we payed $10 to camp there the whole trip, so bring at least that much.

I'll have a group of about 12 - 15 headed through there from Wentworth Springs to Tahoe during the same date range, we'll probably end up at Rubicon Springs Tuesday night.

I believe the fee for the 'Springs is $15 per rig.

Later,
....Mike

I believe rates went up last year or will go into affect this year. 15.00 to camp and 25.00?? for main camp if available. (reservation needed in main camp)

Bass Man

That's cool, I can understand a price raise. I will tell everyone to bring a little extra.

When we camped at the springs 2 years ago, there was a group of H3 hummers that were doing a photoshoot for a magazine... They were all french, too!

I am interested in going on the rubicon trip. I was wondering what the reqiurements of a vechicle should be. I have an 86' sammy soft top, stock roll bar, rocky road 8" coil conversion, stock axles front locker, rear spool, cal mini 6.5to1 transfer case. tires bfg mud terrains 33x10.5x15. full size spare, high lift jack, rescue straps, tow hooks on the front bumper , d rings on the rear. how many days is this trip and what to bring? my first time on the rubicon.

Your rig is more than ready. do bring a extra set of axles both front and rear. There's a good chance of blowing a front birf. and the stock rear axles w/ spool are marginal with 33'' tires. the splines twist then break. you should have enough gas but a extra 5 gal never hurts, bug repellent, water, and tools for your vehicle. I'm taking my sami on the 20th of this month. have fun.

you mean to actually carry them on my rig the whole trip thats alot of extra weight? maybe I should just up grade my axles?

Not complete axles, just the axle shafts.

I have some stock front axle shafts for sale if you want them $60, both short and long arm in good condition. They just came out yesterday. Let me know I can bring them to hollister tomorrow.

Sorry I haven't been too active, hehe.

I am carring 2 spare rear axles, 3 rubber T-case bushings, possibly spare brake stuff... Enough tools to swap a Diesel engine.

I might bring a passenger berfield from someone who might need one, but I am getting double toughs soon, hopefully before Rubicon.

Also, bring about a case of water per person... No water = Not a happy camper... None of the water at Rubicon is safe to drink out of the creek as far as I know.

Important!

We are going down July 6th. At about 1-2pm, we will be arriving with 3 really big trucks with 10 samurais on the back. We will hopefully be down at Rubicon Springs (hoping the spot is still open) by about 8-9PM.

We might be doing some night wheeling the night, but probably not.

It's really no set time. Just when everyone is ready to wheel we will head out.

July 10th we are heading out up Cadillac.

Oh, when you said you were going though Cadillac Hill, I thought that meant you were starting at the other end. Sounds like you're starting at Loon Lake (I know how to get to that staging area). You want to go all the way up to Cadillac the first day? Why not camp around Buck Island?

Bass Man
06-30-2008, 11:05 PM
Lol... We are going down Cadillac Sunday, and up Cadillac Thursday. We went from loon lake to Buck last year with Brent, but the year before that we went down Caddy and stayed at Rubicon Springs.

First post sounds like your starting on northern side, second sounds like southern side, and third sounds like northern side. Are you starting at the Tahoe (north east) side on Sunday, crossing Cadillac hill, and camping in Rubicon Springs. Or are you starting at the Loon Lake / Ice House Road (South West) side?

Kinda important to know :D I live closest to the South West / Ice House road side, so *crosses fingers* I'm hoping you start there. Otherwise, I'll have to meet you on other side, and figure out how to get there.

Any one doing this with a sammy on 31's? We are planning on travelling the 1000 miles to go and want to bring our sammy. 1.6 16V 4.12 t-case gears stock axles locked front and rear. SOA with rears up front power steering blah blah blah. I have a set of 33's but I'm not really geared for them as well as not wanting to break a bunch of stuff.

Shorter than driving to Oregon :grinpimp:

Where would you like to meet up? I've never been to the north side, but I'm sure I can get directions to wherever you want to meet.

It's been done on stock sami's locked F&R. I've been in there on 1.3L with open diffs SPOA on stock springs and did fine. The 1.6L, 31", SPOA, RUF, gearing & power steering will all be a bonus, and make it super easy for you.

Bring spares: Fuses, belts, axles, u-joints, t-case mounts (these kinda act like fuses for the driveline).

Rubicon pushes vehicles to their limits, so expect some kinda breakage. I'd say 1/2 the vehicles end up breaking something, and band-aiding their way out. The advantage of your rig being over-built is you could make it in and out locked in just front or rear if something goes really wrong.

Update on rates -- The new rates are $15 for 1-3 days per rig. Stay 4 days, pay an extra $15.

Bass Man
07-02-2008, 10:12 PM
Thanks for the update, Wooody. We are gonna be getting in late Sunday and leaving early Thursday morning, so I believe that is 3 nights.

What I am bringing is enough tools to take a sammy apart (it's been done before ;))

All 3 D-lines (I don't want to give these up, they go to MY sammy)

2 rear spare axles, maybe an extra hub or 2 for the front, cuz with Chromo's, that's the next weaker link.

3 spare T-case mounts

Maybe an extended brake line per Front/Rear. (Vice grips work good for leaky wheel cylinders)

Maybe a spare drag link.

We will have a portable mig welder (used it before. Dang Detriot lockers )

Got the gears & locker in today. Along with rebuilt steering knuckle, replaced rear drum, front rotor, bad tie rod end, misc bearings, almost all axle seals, misc bolts (wrong grade / size).... glad I had someone else do it. I wouldn't have had the tools / time to do everything they did. Took two guys all day!

Installed F&R d-rings. They're just welded on, so... have to be careful with them. I'm about to go out and wheel a bit now to test it out.... If all goes well, fluid swaps & inverter install tomorrow. Then packing & UFC.

Sweet!

I just got the front end done, Stereo with 5 speakers, and the T-case put in... 6.5:1, 5.12's and 33's are CRAZY low. Almost too low. I'm afraid I might break something in the rear end because of how much torque it puts on it at idle!

Local meeting is at Brotherton Pipeline at 10 A.M. tomorrow. Gonna get all the rigs loaded and ready for the looong haul.
