: Aluminum Radiator
randii 07-16-2002, 11:05 AM I'm looking for a 13x31, 14x29, or 15x24inch radiator (in order of preference, first-to-last). Space is VERY tight, courtesy of my motor swap, unless I want to tear out most of the front radiator bulkhead.
I have searched extensively here and elsewhere for a radiator that will work with my specific application... very wide, but not too tall.
Absolute: www.absoluteradiator.com
Radiator.com: www.radiator.com
AFCO Racing: www.afcoracing.com
Howe: www.howeracing.com
Ron Davis: www.rondavisradiators.com
Griffin: www.griffinrad.com
All of these places carry SCADS of radiators, and some can custom-make them for pretty reasonable prices... but I'd like something replaceable, instead of a one-off custom piece.
Does anyone here know of an exceptionally short-and-wide stock application?
Hell, I'm even willing to section (i.e. shorten) and re-tank a top/bottom tank conventional brass radiator if it is wide enough...but I'd prefer aluminium. :D

I know the little Jeep Cherokees 4.0l had had a very short ,wide
radiator. I dont know the exact dimensions.
randii 07-16-2002, 11:42 AM FWIW, here's a simple diagram of where it needs to fit:

That's a view from the front. The radiator needs to go above the bottom vaguely-tubular crosspiece, and still slot in under the rail above. The headlight buckets are about 32" apart.

Speaking of which mine just sprung a leak - any suggestions for a cheap (money not quality) replacement?
randii 07-16-2002, 12:25 PM Brandon, check out the links in the first post. Radiators.com has GREAT prices on stock replacements, if that's what you need.
What ARE you running in your Fordota? :D

Belly Dragger 07-16-2002, 12:36 PM Randii why not find the best but a little big best fit then hack up the front clip then build brackets for the fascia?
Cheaper than a custom and possibly better cooling for that Cobra.
How about 14 1/8" X 29 1/4" Part # 342TM

I may have to do that, but I'd like not to. The radiator bulkhead holds up the whole front of the front clip, and you can kind of see the channel support that runs along its bottom in the picture I posted... I'd like to leave that channel untouchedif at all possible.
I'm off to the Howe website again to check for Part # 342TM -- I musta missed that the first time, because it sounds PERFECT. Thanks, JKOZ

XJs had a radiator about 12x36" if I remember right. I got a 12x36" from Howe for my XJ V8 swap and it works killer.

Pepper 99 cents
Bars Stop under $5.00
Propane Torch, and solder less than$30.00
Held for two months :D
Depends on how bad the leak is, is it repairable?http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?s=&postid=403575
morpheus 07-16-2002, 02:47 PM will a rad that wide not hit your PS box Randii ?

randii 07-16-2002, 03:00 PM JKOZ pinned it -- thanks, man.
I still have to finalize cost and depth (time zone puts me outside of business hours), but the 342TM should fit like it was MADE to slot in there.
14.25 Tank height
14.375 Total height
29.25 Total width - bottom
29.25 Total width - top
24.375 Core width
14.125 Core height
The only rub is that the 342TM is a Chebby radiator, so it has a passenger-side filler neck, passenger side outlet, and driver-side inlet, instead of a driver-side fill-neck, driver side outlet, and passenger-side inlet for Ford. Guess my Isuzu hoses won't fit :p
Thanks, all!

No worries, there... the stock steering box sits well behind the radiator bulkhead, and the new radiator is gonna mount forward of that bulkhead. There should be plenty of room for the radiator.
... the fan, on the other hand. THAT's gonna be entertaining. The serpentine really bolluxes up a bunch of space. I *may* be able to sneak a couple of small pullers into there, with the motors offset between the zigs and zags of the belt. I can clear the blades, but dunno about the motors. Every thought of putting the blades on the back of the radiator and the motor on the front? :D
I have a coupla old Mercedes pushers, but I have little faith that they'll provide enough airflow by themselves...

Modine, it is about 19.5"x32" :)
Just hack the front, built a support that encases the radiator and ties the body together as well.
I just swapped my water gauge again, none of em seem to register or my engine likes to run real cold!
Schly 07-16-2002, 10:52 PM Randii,
Yes, the Jeep Cherokee Radiators are very short and wide. I happen to have one for sale in very good condition if anyone needs one. It's out of the truck if you need me to measure anything for your application.
John
randii 07-17-2002, 01:04 AM Schly, I'd welcome measurements on that radiator... the aluminum radiator above looks good, but one can never have too many options...

Schly 07-17-2002, 08:31 AM Randii,
I will try to get measurements tonight.
