: better gas milage question.
wiggit1971 07-16-2002, 01:04 PM have a 2000 f250 v10 trition , 5 1/2" fabteic lift ,goodyear wranglers mt/r lt 285/75r16, and a aftermarket air filter. this is how i bought it. it has roughfully 42,000 on it and it gets 9 miles to the gallon. that is with and with out pulling anything. what can i do to increase my gas milage? i know there are some type of add ons that can help but right now no luck in finding any info on anything. and i did try to use the search . what are your sugestions from cheap to o-my god.
thanks:)
Rock Puppy 07-16-2002, 02:11 PM its a V10 thats a average gas milage.. theres not really any GPM upgrades.. Get a diesel!!!
welndmn 07-16-2002, 03:01 PM Ask DRM he had a whole page done on stuff he did
It's kind of sad that with all the modern EFI, Overdrive trannies and the like the best milage a gas engine in a big truck can expect is only 9-10 MPG.
Hell, my '73 F-250 with no OD, 460 v8, 4V Holley, 33" tires with 4:10 gears can get 11MPG.
Anyway good luck.
Eric
synds9 07-16-2002, 05:39 PM more torque!
Ultim8kaos 07-16-2002, 05:55 PM Dude,
That is exactly what to expect from the V-10! :flipoff2:
After you spend a buttload of cash on upgrades you will find you coulda had a diesel with tons more towing capability and better fuel economy! :D
wiggit1971 07-16-2002, 06:02 PM that is what it is looking like to me:mad: .
i was going off my brothers that gets around 12 puling a 24 enclosed trailer. but for the prics and what it looked like, i couldn't pass it up. it sat on the lot for 3 months. started at 29,900and ended up at 22,000. i knew from the start it had bad gas but did not expect this bad.
EMIEVEL 07-16-2002, 06:30 PM I have a V10 duallie with 4.30 gears and a little smaller tires than stock. I also have that doohicky on the console that tells mpg, etc., etc. It's pretty accurate according to my calculations.
Anyway, before my modifications, my truck got about 13 mpg empty, tailgate down, on the HWY at 75 mph. In the city it was close to 10 mpg.
Towing my 50 foot car trailer loaded with 15000 pounds on top of it, my mpg was down to 5.5 on the HWY at 55 MPH. With the trailer empty (6000 lbs) I was getting 8mpg at 55 MPH.
Then I bought a Gear Vendors Under/Overdrive (no other mods).
Empty HWY: 16-17 mpg at 70-80 mph (2250 rpm approx.)
Empty City: 10 mpg
Loaded Trailer: 8-9 mpg at 55-65 mph (depending on hills)
Empty Trailer: 10-11 mpg at 60-65 mph (hills)
Gear Vendors saved approx. 400 rpm's at 70-80 mph
Here is what really screws with me:
I've been driving around the country since I was 16 racing pro motocross (I know a lot about long drives!) When I drove my van(s) at 55 mph, I got about 3 mpg more than at 65 mph. That equated to about $3500 in savings per season, plus I had half as many breakdowns. Made good sense, right? So, when I started transporting cars and Harleys around the country, I drove at 55 mpg to save on expenses. After I put the Gear Vendors on, I drove to Vegas at 60 mph on cruise control, empty, and no trailer. I got 16 mpg, I was stoked. On the way home, I was following a friend at 75-80 mph and got 17 mpg. WTF??? If I try to tow my trailer at 65 mph, the milage drops.
If I would have had this truck when I was racing, I would've made an extra $6000 a year!!!!!! But, I will say my vans never costed $35000 either!
wiggit1971 07-16-2002, 06:34 PM not sure what a gear vendor is. never heard of one. would i know it from some other name?

Umm, that's the name of the company dude.
Gear Vendors (http://www.gearvendors.com/)

Yeah, sorry about that. Gear Vendors makes a device that replaces the tail housing of the tranny (on mine), and gives me an overdrive for each gear the truck came with stock.
1st gear stock - 1st gear overdrive
2nd gear stock - 2nd gear overdrive
etc., etc. up to overdrive stock - double overdrive
I have 8 different gears now
ONETUFF76 07-16-2002, 11:43 PM what did you pay for your over/under drive?
EMIEVEL 07-17-2002, 12:07 AM I paid $2900 out the door installed. That includes two services (oil change) for free every 15000 miles. Comes with a two year full warantee unlimited milage. I'm real happy. It reduces the amount of shifts from the actual transmission, reduces stress on the motor, and gets better milage. In gas savings alone it would take about 50k miles to pay for itself, but I'm interested in "saving the truck". I'm trying to get 500k miles out of it, without replacing the V10. I use Mobil 1 and change all filters on a regular basis. I also use super unleaded gas.
Ultim8kaos 07-17-2002, 06:16 AM  $2900 for the Gear Vendors over/under. For only $1500 more the diesel would have been the better choice! I get much better mileage towing than you do and when I go to resell the truck the resale will be higher! :D I get 20 mpg empty and 13.5 - 15 towing going 65-70 mph over the mountain passes here in CO. (6 spd.) Granted I don't carry the payload you do. I only lug around 8K to 10K lbs.
The fact that you get better fuel mileage at a higher speed now is probably due to the fact the engine is at its sweet spot at the higher mph with the overdrive.
Now, what would my diesel do with the Gear Vendors unit  (12 gears!) Hmmmmmm.
wiggit1971 07-17-2002, 07:38 AM well what the hell , here is a question for you would it be silly to instal a diesele for the v10? or is this just a silly question? would it be feasiable? just making your screws turn:smokin: :smokin: :smokin: :blender: :blender:
Ultim8kaos 07-17-2002, 02:43 PM Dude,
Quit :smokin: and just live with the V-10! A swap wouldn't be worth the hassle. Be easier and more feasible to just sell the V-10 equipped truck and buy a diesel powered one if that is what you want.
wiggit1971 07-17-2002, 03:04 PM yea that is what i thought it would be a big waste. i do like the v10 though.

I wanted a diesel but I got a smokin deal on the V10. I traded a 1996 Ford 3/4 ton 4X4 van straight across for the duallie. The crew cab, long bed duallie had 38k miles, Lariat package, air bag suspension helpers and not a scratch on it. I only paid $20k for the van! My duallie is for sale now with a 100k on it, and I'll replace it with a diesel. A Frieghtliner, with a Detroit diesel!
Ultim8kaos 07-17-2002, 05:20 PM OK, now I'm jealous! :D :flipoff2:

Two things..
1) Why didn't you buy a truck you could afford to drive?
2) Did you do a search on WTF this board is for?
Newbies.... :barf:
GRMhick 07-27-2002, 01:01 AM about the only thing i see a v10 being better for is in the mud or sand where it works better when you have higer RPM.. which is why my naighbor bought the v10. Though, with my dodge 318, i get about the same MPG... except when loaded.. where i still get 9mpg.
For my $$$, i woudl pick up a diesel, swap over the lift, etc, and sell the v10..
