I believe you've got what's commonly referred to as (well :rainbow:newbie syndrome first, but...) an NP 231 Transfer Case. Remember that & you can get all sorts of crap figgered out right here:

Um.....yeah.....well let's see, by drive line do you mean drive shaft? Uh, most XJ's have two of them, as do most every other vehicle represented on this board, and yet you failed to mention which, front or rear. By output shaft one can only assume that you would be referring to the transfer case output shaft, but that would be an assumption because you also failed to mention that. Is your feeble newbie mind trying to ask about something so complex that your fingers do not know how to push the little lettered buttons in a sequence such as to ASK A COMPLTE AND VALID QUESTION? I'm not saying that you are stupid, or that you have a stupid question, just that you asked it stupidly, please resubmit a complete query and I'm sure it will be responded to in the appropriate manner, brutal flaming for a silly kindergarden question, well thought out and informational answers for a college level quandry. Then and only then can we produce an accurate portrayal of your stupidity.
