I did a search and found alot of 14bolt shaved pics but no dana 70 shaved pics.
Im not gonna cut and weld in a plate Im just grinding off the lip.
I have grinded the lip flat with the U shape on the bottom of the diff. Thats about 3/8in of trim so far, and has just started cutting into the cover, I was gonna go another 1/8in into the cover angled up to flat with the U-shape, this should make the grinded section about parell with the ground when mounted on the jeep.
Now Im also gonna grind the sides of the bottom diff lips. I was gonna grind to about 1/4 form the diff cover on each side also at an angle.
I ran out of grinding wheels some Im killing time looking for pics.
thanks guys...

Try searching for pictures of shaved Dana 60's. I know that quite a few of these pictures have been posted here.

SO did you grind all the way to the cover on the sides? angled or flat?
What do you use to get the LARGE nut off the inner axle on the dana 70, Is it the same as the dana 80s? I measured 2-9/16in, I keep missing the shop's open hours after I get off work but today I got in early and hope to get this socket they say they have in stock? Its jsut a bolt no tabs or slots like the dana 60s, it jsut a big ass NUT. Its taking me forever to find the socket locally. PITA
so new shoes, some bearing inspeciton add grease, weld on the new perches, do a sye, build a cv shaft, get the brakes working, get the E-brake on.....
but right now "AT WORK" sums it up.
DO dana 60s have the same lip? I know they have the same cover.

I ground it down flat to the inspection cover. Then I angled what was left..As for the nut..I use a cole chisel and turn the nut that way.The only reason I do it that way is whoever owned both of my 70's before did it that way and you really can't put a socket on now..

My dana 70 nuts are 2-9/16 BUT with ROUNDED corners - it's a special socket - a regular 6pt 2-9/16 will not fit.

YEA. I bought the 2-9/16 yesterday but like you say its got round corners. I got teh spnidle nuts off but Im worried IT wont be able to torque them down. HOW many FT-LBS should they be torqued to?
I paid $20 for a close to the right tool, but Worst case Ill have to weld some spacers in the corners where its rounded off.
Is there a special name for this spindle nut with rounded corners?
Still no pics??

There's at least three kind of D-60/70 spindle nuts ... but they are all the same thread!
Yeah, I bought that rounded socket to take apart my D-70 and another six slot for the late '70's HP 60's but will never use either again because I bought two nut sets from Parts Mike (http://www.partsmikeparts.com/60Front.htm) that are the four slot style with pin locks. Now I need only that socket for both the FF 70 hubs and also for my 60 up front.

Look up Rock Taxi on the New Wok Taxi build up in the cruiser section. He took a TON off of his 70 and plated the bottom with steel.

Ash, If you feel like braving the idiots at autozone, I think they loan out the spindle nut socket you need. I know for sure that napa and Big A (don't know if you guys have those) also sell them. Not sure on a price though.
