Ok, this might be kind of a newbie question, but it just hasn't come up...

When we talk about the "series" of a u joint (1310, 1330, etc) what is that measuring?

10 bolts and 12 bolts use different size joints, but they're both 1310 series? What gives? :confused:

Evidently not as much of a newbie question as I first thought....

as far as i know the series number is not any measurment but just a part #

I remember something from way back when that the series was for torque ratings....sounds good anyway :rasta:

1310 is 1/2 ton commonly - 3 1/4 across the caps- 1 1/16 cap (cheesy on anything with a 35" tire or more) 1330 is 3/4 ton same size caps in most cases as 1310 1 1/6 but 3 5/8 across the span of the joint - not good angle capability in most cases 20 max- mainly for stuff- 3r series or sagina commonly in chevy stuff inside clips and very cheesy aftermarket stuff- (cadillac c/v ) 1350 is 3 5/8 across 1 3/16 caps and pretty damn tough - 1410 series 1 1/2 ton commonly 4 7/16 across the caps 1 3/16 caps same as 1350 size caps- and max angle in most cases 30 degree's nice for lifted rigs with dana 60's and 14 bolts- and 1480 oh yeh baby lets just say its damn near unbreakable with 5 ton rockwells- hehe Jess :D

I would think Chevy 10/12 bolt axles (driveshaft U-joints).

the 10 bolt in most cases in trucks came with 3r series- a smooth pinion yoke no tabs like 1310 to retain the joint- there's slips on the caps- so some 10 bolts did some did not have 1310- most 12 bolts had 1310 - Jess:D

almost every axle can use a variety of yoke sizes,
so just saying 10 bolt means nothing
go look at a ujoint catalogue and see how many numbers are listed for chev rear axle ujoint over the years

I asked this same q on a mailing list awhile back. As I understand it 1310, etc is to be considered more of a "series," it's definitely not a part #. 1310 joints can take a particular load under specific testing conditions for a certain period of time, etc.

Oddly, a 5-297X is considered a 1310 but I know many will swear this joint is stronger than a 5-1203X which is a 1330.

Here's some more info, the original poster can fess up if he wants, I know he's on this board:

dimensions as a outside snap ring (OSR)joint. Both list bearing cap diameter, but ISR lists the distance between snap rings and OSR lists the distance over the caps.

5-350x between snap rings 2.3430 bearing cap 1.0620 (both directions on the joint.)

Honestly I don't think any of these numbers is conclusive of anything.

I'm looking for a Spicer book that simple lists critical dimensions for
u-joints.. But so far what I have is a Drive shaft cat, that lists some of the joints in the above dimensions, the industrial book I quoted from yesterday, and a axle book which lists U-joint PN, but not the dimensions for them."

MJ, do your books show more than one pinion yoke for a TRUCK 12 bolt?

This is a sincere question, and partly why I am asking this question in the first place.

I would like to get a little bigger u joint on there, possibly match the larger, outside snap ring 10 bolt driveshaft.

maybe a 2wd, or the "Heavy Half" package had a bigger yoke? Any ideas?

Reddwarf I am not sure on getting a bigger 12 bolt yoke from a stock application but if you remove it and take it to a driveline shop they should be able to get you a new yoke in 1350 or whatever you need. I don't remeber the spline count but it was a fairly common size when i had to replace one on my old truck. Later!

the book doesnt list 12 bolt etc, just year and application.
many chev yokes do not follow spicer joints, the use the saginaw mechanic or whatever they are called.

Thanks anyways, but it doesn't look like they have any yokes to fit the 12 bolt at all....that seems odd. I will keep looking.
