we use a bead blaster (silica) at work. They just bought a soda blaster and it is no comparison. It works like a champ!!

Are you saying the soda is better? I saw this on an episode of trucks today on spike. Is soda as good/better at removing rust as sand/other media?

Soda is much more gentle on the underlying metal than sand. It's great for sheet metal as it'll remove the paint but won't damage the metal underneath. We've used it to remove epoxy coating from galvanized steel....it took of the epoxy without a bit of damage to the galv.
For heavy rust on thick steel I think sand will always be better.

is there something different about the actual cabinet/gun between a soda blaster and bead/sand blaster?
would soda be the best bet for trying to restore bare aluminum intake manifolds and valve covers?

I'd be interested to know for sure too. My buddy has always used soda in his sand blaster with no issues that I am aware of.

from what i've heard/seen and what my dad has told me, the soda is much gentler on the metal then sand/glass bead/aluminum oxide.
you can use and it wont hurt the glass either. its been used to clean whole buildings w/out masking the windows/doors.
on aluminum i'd say it would work wonders, but i've never seen a soda blast cabinet. We use aluminum oxide on aluminum wheels here at my dad's Powedercoating shop, as we dont have a soda blaster.......yet

Soda would be great for aluminum intakes and thin metal valve covers. Soda blasting leaves a satin finish whereas sandblasting produces a flat finish. But, if you want the fresh cast look for the intake, sandblasting will do it.
If you're going to use soda in a traditional sandblasting pot, I'd recommend reducing the deadman nozzle down one size if possible. Also, if you hate unplugging damp sand jams at the flow control valve, you'll really, really hate unsticking soda jams....the really bad ones act like bondo. Clean, dry air is important for reducing frustration.

soda blasting is good for paint and body filler removal without the risk of damaging the underlying metal as bad. we use both forms when i do a frame off on a jeep. we soda blast all the body parts, and aluminum (intake manifold and the like). we sand blast everything else. sand blasting, when done correctly through experience is not goin to damage parts like some believe. if we get a tub that has some rot starting. i will soda blast the tub first, then go over the bad area with the sand blaster. if it punches through it needed to be cut out and patched with fresh metal anyways. soda blasting is the way to go on more delicate things, and it really does work very well. i get my bead blasting, soda blasting, ans sand blasting media from the same place. look in the phone book for sand blasting supplies and call around. i would not buy this stuff from sams even if they had it. the mark up would be higher. i buy my shit by the ton (2000lbs) and get a huge price discount due to that.

According to the video i posted, they say a 50lb bag will run for ~1 hour which i think would be about right for a hobby guy doin shit here and there.
How does this compare to bead blasting? or walnut shells?
