This probably isn't the right forum but I know you guys are pretty crafty so I'll ask. I've got an older John Deere riding mower with a hydrostatic type transmission that I'd love to get some headlights on. Redneck, I know, but I've got a lot of yard! Surprisingly Google turned up very little. I was thinking about just adding some type of lighting off the battery with a switch inline, but am a little unsure about the charging system of the mower and all the other details.
Any ideas?
Thanks

that's probably your best bet, unless you have a lead coming off the dealy...
I can't remember what it's called - stator?
If you look on your engine, and follow the wires back, they come to an electrical pickup. When the engine's turning, it's generating enough voltage to carge the battery.
If there's a second lead, you could hook some in there, otherwise, you're stuck going off the battery w/ a switch.

What type of "rider"? I'm assuming rear engine? Does it have a starter/generator on it? If not, I would be tempted to spend the money on LED lights, which would help out the system immensely.
Mine has small automotive style lights, but it also has an automotive sized starter/generator.

an older john deere can have an external generator/starter too, it depends how old it is... my 65 cub cadet has one.

What model? If it has electric start it can handle some lights, maybe just let it run for a bit after shutting the lights off to let it charge.

If its real old like my Farmall A it may be 6 volt

Sorry for the delay.
The model is a John Deere F525 circa 1994 or so. It's goofy looking with the three wheel design, but free so I'm not complaining.
It does have electric start, but beyond that I have no idea how big the stator would be.

That should support lights no problem, just tap in at the battery.
