i am going to be getting either 3 or 4 point harness for my new seats. It is going in my 1986 k20. I do not have a roll cage so i was wondering what is the best way to mount the belts. I know your supposed to have around a 45 degree angle for the mount behind your neck, but i am not sure if the cab is strong enough to hold the belts. Any help would be sweet.

Thanks

Cab should be fine if done right. Thats where the factory seatbelts are mounted to. I would plate it front and back, then use a good size washer on both sides.

Theres no 45 degree angle for the upper mount. it should be level, or VERY slightly below your shoulder level.

Also 4pts + no cage can make for a bad outcome in a roll over. You can't move, and the roofs going to collapse around your head. 4/5 pts and a cage should be done as a package deal. a cage without a harness is asking to hit your head on it, a harness without a cage is asking for the roof to cave in and your head being the highest point in the truck.

So a stock belt is safer than a 3,4 or 5 point harness you are saying, if you dont have a cage? It seems that a belt wouldnt matter no matter which one you use if you rolled and the roof colapsed. I am planning on doing a cage hopefully this summer. So my question now is, is a regular belt safer than a harness without a cage? And if so why?

yes and no...it depends on the instance of the accident. in a roll over where your roof collapsed in then a regular belt will be safe because it will allow your body to move away from the roof where a harness wont let you and your head will be the first thing to stop the cab from coming in. in say i high speed collision then a harness would be safer because it wont let you flop around as much...

for a wheelin rig i'd say stick with the regular belts til the cage is in and then use the harnesses.

interesting i never really thought about that. Maybe i will just stick with the stocks until i get the cage. Thanks

A stock seat belt would be a 3 point harness. Unless it is just a lap belt.

when i said 3 point i ment the harness that had only a single strap behind your head then split over your shoulders. I thought that was a 3 point and a 4 point was when it had 2 straps behind youhead then came over your shoulders. oh well

I would throw the lap belts in there anyway for on the trail. They realy hold your butt in the seat alot better than the stock belt.
